You gottas love Jay...

"I need you to invest, your probably gonna lose, i'm going to lose more, but what the hell lets get it on!!!!!"

if that isnt full disclosure I dont know what it is.

But Jay isnt a salesman, he is a tournment promoter, same thing you might say??

Nah, A real salesman would have pitched it like this:

"Were gonna lose our asses on the gig but, were gonna put ourselves in a spot to gamble big, take down the rail, bust who ever we can and that will more than offset any costs/losses of the event. So how can you lose? Go grab your check book and lets get this ***** started!!!"

I rest my case, check is in the mail.

and that is why I have a fleet,

Fatboy,

Come on buddy.......Jay is a salesman. He's a good one! He has his customers best interest at heart and he delivers.

To lump ALL salesman together is simply not right! There are many crooked salesman that are only concerned with their own pocketbook, but there are a large percentage of GOOD salesman, like Jay.

Good salesmen make things happen! They care about people and creating opportunities.

The way it works is this. On the $225 entry fee for the Bank Pool, $200 goes into the purse and $25 is the registration fee. Once again a pretty standard fee on most pro tournaments. In fact, many take out far more in comparison.

I understand. Personally I'd think it simpler to announce the prize purse as 90% of the entry fees, plus whatever you are adding, but that's just me.

That's a big chunk of time for me but I might come if I get an invitation. I hope you're not going to make it an invitational.

If i have anything to do with it, and i'm sure i will, I would love to have you there, and When I do my Jamboree you WILL be a part of it for sure!!!

Jay,
In your experience, does having a Chef Anton or Mike Massey type show, pay off? Maybe we could hold the Joe Rogan challenge match that has been talked about.

I don't understand what the difference between the registration fee and the entry fee. No-one is joining anything. Why not just increase the entry fee by $25? Otherwise make it so you only pay the $25 once no matter how many events you enter, which works out to a $50 discount if you enter all three..

Jay is putting up $50,000 I don't think asking players to pay $25 per event is asking too much.JMHO

I hope that this works out because LA should have a yearly major! Jay always put on the greatest events and I'm been to most of them.

My opinion, I'm not really jazzed about seeing a trick shot show. I'd rather see the pros do challenges for extra cash. Who can execute diffucult shots to a specific target the best. Draw and follow competitions to a target point. Set up 15 rail balls and they have to pocket them in a certain order. See which pro comes out on top.

Do a raffle every 2 hours to play a pro for cash. Have a race to 3. If the pro wins he get $100, if the fan wins he get $500. I think people would love to see that.

IMO opinion Mike Massey does the best show of all time. I loved it when he used to take on ANY challenger at doing extended push ups. They could do them with two hands and he would do his with one hand. He may be the most powerful human being I ever met. He could probably lift the back end of a car in his prime.

Chef Anton does the second best show (and it's damn close) and he is a blast from start to finish. His patter with the audience is hilarious and his magic tricks always bring down the house. Plus, just like Mike, he is a class act fron the word go. The "Magic Chef" has offered his services gratis for a fund raising event to benefit the Shaun Livingston Foundation later this month. It is possible I would ask Anton to warm up the crowd prior to the Finals. And it will be a paying gig this time. :)

Saying all that, this tournament will occupy every hour of every day. As they said in The Hustler, "This is Ames mister, all they play is pool here." And that's all we'll be playing if I can get this thing on. Back to reality, I've found five investors for a total of $9,000. We have a long way to go. And yes, for the one who asked me, I will really be putting up 50K of my own cash. In fact, that is the opening deposit in the tournament bank account. EVERY investor will see a statement from this account, so they will know where their money went and how it is being used. That's the way I do business.

I do wish you the best of luck

Jay,

You say you will probably lose money, but I hope you make money, and lots of it; because then maybe you'll do another tournament.....and then another, and another, and another..........

wahcheck, I have to be honest about this, particularly if I'm asking people for money. I know what it takes to make a successful event, and we will be lacking some of the necessities to make that happen. We will in all likelihood need a huge box office to turn a profit. Making big money the first year is out of the question. Making a small profit is the best case scenario. As Fatboy so eloquently put it, this is Full Disclosure.

I remember another man like me who produced some great events in the early 70's in L.A. His name was Fred Whalen, and he loved pool. He had made some money in his lifetime and he just decided he was going to put on a big pool tournament right here in L.A. I went to his house one day with Richie Florence. Fred was filling us in on the details of the upcoming event, and had invited Richie up there to tell him he was in the field.

Richie asked him point blank if he thought he could make any money putting on a pool tournament. Fred looked at us and glowed a huge smile, and he had a wonderful smile that he shared freely. He said "Richie, you'll learn that not everything in life is about making money. Sometimes there are other rewards that are just as great." I never forgot those words of wisdom.

Great idea Jay.

As much as I wish I had the extra money to help out, I just don't!!

But, I will be available to help with whatever you need - volunteer wise!!

Those were great events, Jay. I believe Whalen ran the "World Pocket Billiards Championships" (14.1 only) from 1969-1972 at the wonderful Elk's Building near MacArthur park in L.A. I believe he had Tiff Payne as a partner.

Whalen's events were very popular, especially in an era when there were very few major tournaments held anywhere. However, your event(s) will undoubtedly generate much more interest and participation-- largely due to the internet, and also your reputation as a top promoter, an honest dealer, and an all around cuddly guy...:)

If I remember right, Gary said the BC Open didn't really get in the black until the third year. Did you ever talk to him about it, Jay?

For the last time Doc, you can't have a sleep over with me!

We now have six full investors and one for half. When we get about 12 to 15, I will start looking for a location.
