With the new year approaching, I am reminded of the pool happenings in the past year, wondering what 2011 will bring.

What is the most memorable pool happening in 2010 for you?

Could it be Earl Strickland on the comeback trail, winning the Seminoles event?

How about Mike Sigel making a good showing at the tournaments he entered? :)

The young guns, Jesse Engel and Mike Dechaine, seem to be making a statement in 2010.

How about Corey Deuel hitting 'em strong the first day of the Mosconi Cup and then later winning the Joss Turning Stone event?

There was a streak of unusually big money games in Vegas in 2010. :D

Please share your favorite memory or what pool-related happening sticks out for you in 2010.

2010 highlights

.......Earl winning a significant tournament (first time in a long time)
.......The big money games where Dippy lost huge sums (for pool)
.......Signs of the times (the technological age): when we are blessed with the opportunity to watch live streaming of pool matches of major players (often for free!) by just turning on the computer.......

Our monumental 3rd place of the Greek national team at the world team championship in February.
They beat the USA 2009 Mosconi cup winning team in order to get to the semifinal.
Our 18 year old Alexandros Kazakis beat Corey D. and Nikos Oikonomopoulos made the winning spot shot at a thrilling shootout.
The team was completed by two other Greek champions, Vangelis Vettas and 50 year old Aris Damoulakis who pulled out victories over Daryl Peach and other top class players half of his age.
They were the only team without team leader and any kind of financial support.
Their shirts were provided by Greek immigrants in Germany where 45 nations sent out their best to compete.
They fought with their soul against pool giants and brought home the greatest Greek achievement in Pool history.
Made everyone proud here.

Thank you for sharing that great accomplishment in Greece for the year 2010. That is absolutely phenomenal. I wish you could post up a picture in the thread. I would love to see the shirts that they were wearing. That is a cool pool happening for sure!

The first to come to my mind is Jesse Engel giving a goose egg to sigel, then defeating Strickland 11-10 in his next match at the US Open.

The loss of some great rooms

2010 marked another year of loss for many cities as some of our favorite pool rooms and bars have shut their doors due to the economic pressures of today. The Northern Lounge and Alexanders were two local action spots in the Phoenix area that have been lost in the last couple years.

Is there a favorite room or owner in your area you would like to give a shout out to that suffered the same fate?

The Mosconi Cup first and the World Cup in Manila second. Never saw crowds that were so into a match as I did in London. Not in forty+ years of attending tournaments have I seen anything like it. York Hall and the Brits made for a most memorable experience!

At the World Cup, held in a giant mall in the heart of Manila, the crowds were five and ten deep all the way around the arena, and four levels high there were packed balconies of people looking down on the action. Literally thousands of pool fans who were hanging on every shot. No one can tell me that pool is not a spectator sport. I saw for myself right there, that people will turn out in throngs to watch great play by great players!

How can we forget Efren showing all the young whipper snappers how its done by winning his 5th ALL ROUND at the DCC AND the Fatboy Challenge.

This was the year 2010 I stayed home and played in our Community Room. Nothing exciting to report. I did not go to Vegas to watch the BCAPL in May, did not make the DCC, or Hopkins Expo, but would have like to gone.

If there was a highlite in 2010 it was going over to Kolby’s once this pay year, and watching Scott F. Bernie P. battle it out in a game of One Pocket @ Preacher Ron’s Tournament!

I see nothing exciting on the horizon in 2011 except getting another year closer to a Medicare Card. May try, and go to Las Vegas in May, but because of the economy I will have to wait to see if I pay Uncle Sam in April, or get a small refund.

No plans to play in a Local Tournaments as getting home at 1 or 2 am is not appealing, and about 99.9% sure I will avoid League play next year unless someone is real hard up for a substitute.

Here's a link to one of the photos from that world team championship.
Nikos has just made the winning shot of the thrilling shootout against the most powerful team on the planet (USA 2009 Mosconi cup winning team) and our boys are flying up to the sky!!! He turns back to Alexandros the 18 year old that beat Corey at that match and Vangelis is behind them. Aris, the old fellow is not in this picture, I'll try to find some more pics.

That was a highly prestigious tournament, with high money prices.
Johnny Archer once again proved to be a world class champion outside the table as well by congratulating in a really warm way our team. He has displayed the best of behaviour every time he set foot in Europe, that I mention concerning his remark about skidding in a specific table, I would never consider him a cry baby..
Thanks for this thread, it's a very nice idea.
Best to all,
Petros

My highlight was the BCAPL in Vegas, Watching SVB,Busta and Efren playing craps with Earl standing there watching. It was priceless

Oh, shucks, I cannot see the Facebook page with the photos. Can you attach a couple on this thread, please? I would love to see them. :)

Nothing so grand for me this past year, at least compared to the previous posters.

My APA team won our division two out of three times, that was cool.

Got a new cue. Quite happy with that. A new break cue, too, and a new case for christmas.

Learned an awful lot, from a bunch of great people, and can't wait to learn a bunch more. I think I've improved reasonably well, given the limited time that I'm able to put into it. Hopefully I can continue to improve as much in the coming year as I did in the past year... That would be a big victory.

Stayed up till 3am local to watch the beginning of the Borana/OMGWTF stream.... that was the highlight of my stream-watching :p

Met a whole bunch of great people here on AZB. This darned forum has become a bit of an addiction for me. Thanks, everyone. This place is great.

This year had 2 significant pool related events for me.
First: I have returned to the game and the league system after a 5 year hiatus.
Second: I have met some great people here on AZ, and look forward to meeting many more!!

Thanks and Happy New Year!!

Ten Ball making its way into pro pool. It's giving pros the proper representaion of our sport and weeding out 9 ball and all that goes with its rack structure. The rules are evolving for rotation and like Bartram said, it should be call pocket (no slop) hopefully it will, sooner than later.
