2014 World 9-Ball Championship

But I don't agree about Shane being unbeatable at winner break.
He's my favorite modern breaker, ( accuracy like Billy Johnson )....
...but there are lots of great players that can lay a pack on you...
...you only have to make ONE ball to keep a man in his chair.
I doubt Buddy Hall was in the top 300 breakers when he could give the world the 8.

+++1.
Good one. Tell it to the fanatical Shanatics and Shansistas who at drop of hat will say their idol is greatest ever.
I remember when Spain won last World Cup there was mega song and dance and people were anointing them as greatest team ever But what happened to them now?
There was talk about Pete Sampras being greatest years ago and after that Roger Federrer but we now know Nadal should surpass them soon.
And Shane isn't even a global world champ yet unlike Spain or Sampras or Federer LOL. Shane will be first to say he is not unbeatable ever (actually didn't Busta have Shane's number in long format already leading him in head to head matches ?)
People have short memories and they love flavours - they remember flavours they like, flavours of today, flavours of their region. Objectivity goes out the window when they talk up their idols

TV table matches will have more cameras so better angles, zoom etc. Also they mention that Ted Lerner will be doing commentary on some matches
Anyway for tomorrow the matches we should choose for TV table should be
11am local time Carlo Biado Vs Jason Klatt OR Ohi Naoyuki & Ko Pin Yi

230pm local time Shane Van Boening & Dang Jing Hu

I agree about short races and alternate break..it's amateurish.
Another tournament with great players.....
...and the high run will be a one-pack. ...

And the Magic Rack is an equalizer, too.

As to packages, just re-orient your thinking: B&R's in Games 5, 7, & 9 (but not in 3 and 11) would be a 3-pack!

Thorsten is out. Came so close to making it hill-hill.

I'm not a big fan of alternate breaks, but watching players run packs gets old quickly

ARRRRRRRRRGH...:banghead:

Ralf Souquet is a fine player and a fine person.

...but if you leave him a paint-by-numbers layout....he keeps walking around
the table to see where whitey should go.
...an APA 5 can see the pattern.
But Ralf looks like he's Columbus discovering the New World....
.....EVERY TIME!

Then when he misses the shot or over-runs position, he looks like he
might be mistaken and this new land just might not be the Indian Sub-continent.

pt...rant over, back to the scheduled program
:)

Today's final round brought us the exit of four former World 9-ball champions --- Souquet, Hohmann, Ortmann, and Immonen.

No easy matches in this event. The whole world showed up.

:embarrassed2: And here I thought it was a bad day for the Philippines. It is even worse for Germany. Their 3 top players, Thorsten, Ralf and Ortmann were all eliminated. What a day of upsets!!!! Mika, Orcullo, Alex Pagulayan, Kiamco and Lee Van are all out!!!!

i gotta watch that Souquet-Gallego match again. that was a very long nerve-wrecking rack, that last one. wow!

a lot of world champions eliminated today - alex, orcollo, mika, thorsten, soquet. one thing i noticed is that those who came from the qualifiers (like gallego, naoyuki, faraon, chua) were a lot stronger. they probably have more knowledge on how the tables play.

Very very boring to watch with no shot clock. Pool stinks to watch.

Seriously, I'd say I have seen a few players take as much as five minutes on a shot where there is only one option. These players are not doing any service to our game.

I recall about twenty years ago Jack Nicklaus commentating as he watched the play of a comically slow, but capable, pro golfer named Ken Brown. Nicklaus commented that "Brown should be fined on every shot." I'm starting to feel that way about several of these players.

BIG CHANCE for Shane, with many favorites are out and having some luck when needed, he's gonna be the champion.

Before today's matches, the guys who were not in the qualifiers had played only 2 races to 9 (or 3 if they lost once) in 4 days. That's no way to keep in competitive stroke.

Absolutely right. Almost every sport benefits by some sort of shot or play clock. Pool is no exception. 30 seconds is ample time, with 1 time out per rack, to play 9 or 10 ball. Some of these matches, particularly when it got tight at the end, were brutal to watch.

Today will go down in World Pool Championship history as biggest slaughter of world champions (either 8b, 9b , 10b or straight pool) . :)
These 11 world champs were eliminated today
Orcullo
Chang Jung Lin
Karl Boyes
Daryl Peach
Alex
Mika
Ortmann
Hohmann
Souquet
Huidji See -World 10b Champ
Jason Shaw- World English 8b (Blackball) Champ

Only 3 world champs remain (P.S. Shane is not world champ yet so he is excluded :) ):
Appleton
Wu
Neils Feijen -World Straight Pool Champ

Of the remaining last 32
-Of the 20+ top seeds, onlly 11 remain
-Of the 15 qualifiers from stage 1, 6 remain
So you can say out of 32 only 11 (34%) are notable players. The majority of 21 (66%) are less famous players, strugglers, unknowns, nobodies.
That high % of less famous can only be good for game.
