2021 World Snooker Championship

Ronnie O'Sullivan was saying in the build up on Eurosport that Selby just does what he has to do to win with his game. Tons of respect shown.
Makes sense. Selby knows his limitations and understands that his best path to victory against the most elite is playing a style in which he can expect more than half of the really good looks at the table. His tactical prowess often results in him achieving the goal of earning more good chances than his opponent. Knowing how to win the race to the shot, whether its in pool or snooker, is a key ingredient in competitive success, and while one may or may not enjoy watching a grinder like Selby, it's tough not to admire his exceptional tactical skills. As for me, while I don't approve of his gamesmanship., I do enjoy watching Selby.

he hasn't really slowed down the final yet, so good on him. some nice frame steals yesterday and some really excellent shots from both. really smashing them in at warp speed from long range.

murphy hasn't really capitalized on the chances his long potting has provided him with, which he needs to do if he is to have any chance today.

Congrats to Mark Selby!! That was a pretty great final, but wish Shaun didn't go for that last red (or made it).

See post #145, which gives some specific examples of how he exhibits less than stellar sportsmanship. He's a bit whiney and complains a lot.
Got it! Just remember a claim of disrespect and sharking against Ronnie when he died on the hill.

The money in snooker has really picked up! I mean it motivates anyone to play snooker seriously. I know for a fact that I didn't take pool seriously back when I was 18 years old because I felt that the fame + the money wasn't worth it, so I picked college and a career instead. I am glad that I did take this decision.

If pool has the same money pool as in snooker nowadays who knows I might of took pool as a career back then, but yea I feel that snooker is the way to go if you're a young and upcoming great shooter. I advise anyone to take up a snooker and not pool. Sorry but that's a reality. In snooker, you can make a decent living if you're in the top 32 of the world. You can buy a house and a car by just playing your favorite game as a job. In pool, you can't do that, and please dont bring up gambling its not the same thing.

I won't get into snooker being a better game to watch, because that's my opinion, and I'm sure there are plenty of people that would rather watch 9-ball.

What I do think snooker gets right is

- Consistent tournament schedule and ranking system
- Easy to differentiate between pros and amateurs
- Great production value and commentary
- Majority of players can act professionally
- Fans can bet on the matches

I'm sure there's more, but that's all I can think of at the moment. I do think pool players can make a lot more than they do now, because there is a global audience. But they'll need to address some of the points I listed above (and others) before that can happen.

I really enjoyed this world championship, which I watched nearly every day to at least some extent.

What I like best about snooker is the balance between offense and defense found in the game. Unless you can produce the goods tactically, you don't get to try clearing the table as often as you'd like, and to me, that's as it should be. You have to earn most of your chances. The other thing I like is that because the pockets are tight, big breaks really have to be earned, and some of the big breaks require extremely difficult pocketing and position play.

Both the defense and the offense in snooker require great imagination and execution, at a level far beyond what is typically required in pool.

Well played, Mark Selby.

Great tournament.

Got Home from fishing and sat down with a pot of tea to watch the recorded final session...incredible talent.
There’s such a depth of talent that any of the top 16 players winning is no longer an upset. Four different champions in the last four years. Three different runner ups.

Now the withdrawal starts. However look forward to next season with more chance of Selby overtaking Judd for top ranking. Allan and Ding will fall from the top 16. Lots of Chinese eyes will be on Yan and Zhou.

For those who didn’t get to see any of the snooker live...here’s the last session...it’s marvellous snooker.
...Murphy has been criticized for going for the last red with the long rest...but who wants to get into a safety battle with Selby?

that's exactly right, a quick percentage calculation, how do i like my chances in a safety duel against selby vs my chances on this cut along the rail. imo, it was the correct decision.

they have to. there are rules and fines. and plenty of cameras to show if you're dishonest on a foul. sure, there is also a culture of sportsmanship that pool may not have, but with a proper tour that can kick you off (i.e. you lose your job) or give you a fine, a majority of pool players would act professionally too.

I’m sure if he had an easy snooker he would have played it. Equally Selby’s long potting dropped to 10% in the last session so Saun might have had a decent chance at winning the safety battle.

I can’t criticise him for going for the pot. It’s always better to lose by missing the pot than by playing a poor safety. At least, he had a chance to win.

I must say I enjoyed watching Selby play in the finals. He wasn’t afraid to take risky shots on (even when his long pot success rate dropped in the last session), nor did he drag out any hopeless frames.

Murphy’s long potting is the sight to behold for sure (100% in two out of four sessions I believe). He just fell a bit short on the scoring side.

It’s one of the best Crucible finals in my book, the O.K. Corral shootout of snooker!
