2023 American 14.1 Championship

This happens to be my favorite tournament each year.

With the recent announcement of the World 8ball in Austria it may have a big impact on field in the 14.1 tournament.

I imagine with the huge (75k) money for 1st place possibly as many as 20 top players will bypass the straight pool and go to Austria instead.

Can't blame them but it kinda sucks for us straight pool lovers.

The World 8-Ball ends on the 22nd. The American 14.1 starts on the 25th. I think that's enough travel time.

The two events below are maybe more concern. They are both Matchroom ranking events. The Battle of the Bull overlaps a lot and is in Virginia Oct 23-29, presumably as a warmup for the International Open in Norfolk.

Because play for the International Open starts on the 30th, I don't think the Slovenia Open will interfere with the 14.1.

Based on the projected player list, players are being listed with their country.

If Fedor played and won, then a Russian will be the first American 14.1 champion ever on the male side. Kristina is the first Russia last year to win American 14.1.

It is not a world championship due at least partly to the amount of added money. I think the current required added money for a WC is $100k.

Yes, it's a shame that the Am. 14.1 will be affected by this. Their website currently is talking about 36 players playing down to 16 for single elimination instead of the 40s or 50s of recent years playing down to 24 for single elimination. And the projected player list currently has just 20 names. But many of those 20 are excellent 14.1 players, so the matches should still be good.

No, but it's a very tough title to win. The later editions of the Dragon 14.1 events tended to feature a field weaker than that of the European Championship but the American 14.1 has been producing killer fields of late.

True- but it was sort of a waste of time anyhow- the fields were small, skills were lacking, I don't know if we will ever see another major women's 14.1 in America. I went to view a few years ago and the women were just not very competitive- it is understandable - I give all those women who competed a big thank you for just showing up.
On 4 1/2 inch pockets, the top European men and only a handful of other pros can make 14.1 look interesting any longer.

Yes. There have been maybe four women who competed at a watchable level. Karen Corr finished second in the open event one year (in Midlothian).

Looks like they now expect even fewer players than they did a month ago. The website now says the format will be round robin with 5 groups of 6 players, from which the top 16 will then play a double-elimination stage to the end. And only 23 players are shown on the projected players list. Blasted Bull Battle!

I think they should send invites to those women with capabilities in 14.1. Tkach, Fefilova, Ouschan, Kelly and Allison might be as well (as snooker players are generally good at rack management in straight pool), Corr. Dunno if there are Asian females who play decent 14.1 but I guess it is easy to check.
Get 8 players and let them play one another at round robin stage along with men event. Though this is only possible if there are enough tables at the venue.

Sorry but this is now out of the question entirely- I doubt there is prize money available to make it worth their time, effort, expense to compete with such a short field of truly qualified women.
