29" or 30" shaft... Are they really different?

Today someone told me they play with a 29" because the 30" overhit the ball...
I think for me the longer one takes me out of the taper range I prefer. Not a huge deal but just enough.
Anyone see much of a difference between how the the two differ?

Your going to change the balance of the cue. As far as the weight of the cue, since it's made made they could still make the shaft 4oz.

With my height i could possibly use the extra inch, I choose to use the 29" shaft.

No rules. I used to like Fat shafts .. also 27-28 30-31” shafts. Speaking only for myself I play with what I’m comfortable with. One is not better than the other.
Carbon fiber…have only played with 29”… but the diameter matters 12.4 vs 12.9.
30” might be better for a tall person with long arms.

Here are the customization options for Custom REVO shafts:

  • Tip Diameter - 12.4 or 12.9
  • Joint Type - Uni-Loc, Radial, 3/8x10, 5/16x14, 5/16x18
  • Length - 29" or 30"
  • Weight - 3.5 oz, 4.0 oz (standard), 4.5 oz
  • Vault Plate (Ferrule) Color - White or Black
  • Tip Choice - Victory (S, M, H) or Kamui Black (SS, S, M, H)
  • Engraving - Up to 12 characters.
I'm assuming maybe the 30" shaft might weigh 4.5oz

With seeing all the available shafts that they have, the only thing i would think people would want is a weight change. Your talking about .5oz. I have two shafts and they are about 0.005oz off from each other. It's hardly noticable. I have the shaft in my hand for about a minute and i really don't notice the diffrence.

I feel the same way, not so much overhit as it does something odd on spin shots for me and has more flex. I tried maybe three different 30" shafts, like the 29" ones better. I do like a 30" butt though paired with a 29" inch shaft, works out great for balance and reach without messing with the shooting for me.

If you take two identical shafts from the same cue maker that are one inch different in length. It is unlikely they will be much different at all.

Especially when they are both carbon fiber. Wood might have subtle differences.

I did this with a well known cuemakers personal cue and an identical one he made for me. Mine was an inch longer than his and the hit was virtually identical. He was shocked when we switched cues and played with each others.

That’s what I was thinking as well.
I think what I’m finding is I end up with a longer bridge with the 30” bs the 29”. Takes me out of the sweet spot in the taper.

To give you a serious answer the one inch can be the difference between using a bridge or extension vs not having to, especially on 9ft tables. It will change your balance point because most butts are 28 or 29 inches. Most my cues I have 30 inch shafts I love the extra length especially being a taller guy. At some point I will build a proper custom 30/30 split. The only main down side is it can make the shaft more whippy. That's the main thing I notice. The big pain with 30's other then mezz is I usually have to wait to get one. Joss was 3 extra weeks meucci was 8 weeks. Predator 30's can be tough to come by especially their vantage shafts.

I lost my 29" 12.4 REVO Willie Predator limited. I bought a CF REVO 30" shaft 12.4. After 8 years with the same 29" REVO it felt less nimble for short or raised shots. In fact i have it if anyone wants to trade a 12.4, REVO soft tip 29"?
