3/8x10 joint question

I called Ernie , just now and his standerd pin is 3/8 x 16 or 3/8 x 10 both piloted . He will use what ever pin the buyer want tho . I have hit with several cues that Ernie built and never heard any weird noises . Jim

The question is about putting a non-piloted flat-faced shaft on one of his butts that is designed for a piloted shaft.

I personally have not seen any difference in hit using a flat faced shaft on a piloted butt. I actually intentionally order flat face shafts a lot of the time so I can use them on cues with the same joint but different pilot or no pilot at all. I think the whole idea of a Pilot is just for looks and so a cue builder or manufacturer can limit your after market options. Prime example is a Predator 5/16x14 piloted shaft, it works on both a Joss and Schon, which have different pilots. You can use a Joss made shaft on a Schon, but not vice versa, and the same Predator pilot is used for both. Considering that at one time the Schon/Predator combo was the choice of many high level players it should be obvious the pilot doesn't matter.

The reason that I asked was that the 3/8ths x 10 is my favorite pin.

It is generally a flat faced joint. I know some makers will use a Phenolic insert in the shaft
to make it stronger, rather than just wood threads. Good stuff.

Radial pins, same deal. Wood threads.

It seems that Ernie made a nice little adjustment to the way he uses that pin.

With many brass inserts, you see a tiny nub above the face of the shaft. If you look at the butt, you see a wide and deep void. So, that little brass bub doesn't do a ton of good and you can use a flat face in a butt that is made to accept a Pilot without any problems
at all.

Ernie's shaft pilot looked like it was designed to fit a little more snug both width and depth wise.

That is what one would consider to be a real Pilot. More on the functional side.

Still, the only thing the OP could do is try out a flat face shaft on the butt and see how it goes. No harm in trying. It will work just fine.

Good deal, I'll go try it out and see how I like it
