Pool players have more balls

Just for the sake of conversation I live in a community that has 4 4.5 x 9 tables. A few of the residents want a 3 cushion table. That would mean removing a current table and replacing it with a dedicated billiard table. I am against the change. I feel it would kill the room for the majority of people that come into the room to play pool. The room fills up daily with 9 ball & 8ball players. I never played 3 cushion and have no desire to try it.
Just curious...how many of you guys enjoy 3 cushion billiards as much as a game of 8 or 9 ball, 14:1 or 1 pocket or could you care less. Thanks, Frank

If you have more business than you can handle then NO Don't Do It. But if not what you'll get is a group of daily consistent reliable customers. You may find these tables earning more income than the pool tables. Even worse you may have to move to a larger space cause you need 3 or 4 tables.

Honestly I like both games equally. Pocket pool and carom billiards are similar and different at the same time. Tables are twice as long as wide but after that it all changes quickly. I would suggest if you are considering a carom table you get a heated 5 X 10 table and not even consider anything else. An unheated smaller version is like going from the big leagues to the little league, the difference is that great. Playing on a heated 5x10 is fantastic and when you run a few shots in a row you truly begin to understand how beautiful and difficult a game carom pool is. I count my blessings that I am close to Chris's Billiards and get the opportunity to play on their tables when I have time. The carom tables there are the main attraction these days and are in far better condition than all the pool tables for a reason, they get played.

Pockets in Tucson has 2 10ft Billiard tables that get used regularly. I agree with the above poster that if your only 3 pocket tables that are consistently used, then dont do it. If you always have one table free, the crappiest table, than switch it out for a Billiard table. 3 Cushion is a great game and will make you better at other games as well.

The pool room is in a gated community clubhouse. No charge for time. It's part of the package of living here. I'm the guy that takes care of the room and equipment. Some of the residents asked the Board for a Billiard table. Most the the people that asked for the table will play once in a while. These guys are New Yorkers that grew up playing 3 cushion. I think it would be unfair to the majority of residents that play pool daily. The room fills up. The 3 cushion table would reduce table time for pocket pool players. If the room was larger and a Billiard table could be added in I would not mind. I don't like the idea of swapping a pool table for a 3cush. Thanks for the replies. I'm wondering how popular Carom is in the US....and in Florida.

I would prefer playing 3-cushion if it were available in my area. It's pretty popular in FLA from what I hear. There's a thread about how 3-cushion helps your pool game somewhere, but I'm too lazy to find it for you.

Good luck with your decision...by the way, you should try it, you may like it!

I play pool always, 9-ball, but moving towards 14.1 and rotation. I also want to try some snooker and carom. I'd really love it if a pool room has at least 1 carom table and 1 snooker table.

3 cushion is a very interesting and challenging game, and it may help your pool game also.

How about having a set of carom plugs made for one of the tables?

Hard to come by. Someone made a precision set but they are not meant to be used/removed. I would try a set on my home GC4. TY for suggesting.

If i had more time on my hands, i would definetly play 3 cushion seriously. I think its a beautiful game and worthy of serious study. The thing is my pool game is improving and i dont want to take time away from it.

To quote Danny McGoorty " Pool is so obvious, just knock the ball in the f...... hole, any idiot can see it. But in three cushion billiards where there are no holes and you have to map out inside your skull the paths the balls have to take to get around the table, well there you have something that takes some brains".

Before knocking it, try it. Three cushion is an amazing game. After the first hour I was like "man, I can almost see quitting pool for a few months just to dedicate to this game". It's a lot more interesting and fun than it might sound like on paper.

If you can learn to appreciate it, you won't be disappointed having to play on the 3c table. Give it an hour and if you don't really like it... well, some days you may have to go to the pool hall to get your fix.

I think you can buy inserts to convert a pocket table to a 3C table. May be an OK compromise, especially if the other tables are always in use for regular pool games.

Just look how busy the 3C are is and how many posters it has vs the rest of the forum. 14.1 section in comparison.

I can tell you that a room near me has 4 3C tables and 6 pocket billiard tables, and all get filled up, but you have to go by your area and players.

I prefer 3c to pool these days...but I agree with previous input: if the pool tables you have now are not sufficient to cover demand then it wouold be a mistake to yank one for a 3c table.

And, a pool table is far more flexible than a billiard table...you can play lots more games on it.

How about taking a poll of the existing pool players who use the room? Ask them "Should we replace one of the pool tables with a carom table?"

If I were on the BOD, that's the first question I'd ask the manager: what do the existing players think?

I'm in no way opposed to learning/trying out the game. I said I have no desire to play 3c in my 1st post but might get involved someday. I would start out by learning good habits immediately from a knowledgeable player. I just feel a little guilty about going against having a 3c table in our clubhouse....but I want to do what is best for the majority. I'm only a resident....I don't own the place but I go out of my way to maintain the room and take responsibility for what goes on with the equipment. I went to a local commercial room that had 3c's. The new owner removed them. I went with people that like to play. We were disappointed.
I explained to the guys I was with I have no idea where to start and what to do. I'd like to watch them play and give me some pointers. Maybe I'll give it some serious thought during the Summer. I realize that knowing 3c helps every game. As for now I'm l'm always doing drills when I'm solo. And I want to dedicate my pool playing time to improving at 1 pocket. Thanks for your replies.
