3 person competition format

Hello.
We are 3 friends that want to find a format to play pool (9 Ball or 10Ball), it should last something like 3-4 hours. We don't want to play ring game because you can't play safe.
We thought that will be a good idea to play each other one frame by time until one person got to 11 wins for example. Who first will make the necessary wins will take the cash. Also we can use winners stays at table, but in this format, the person at the table has an advantage.

What other formats we can use so we don't have to wait too long to play each other?

Play sets of 3 games. Winner stays but can only stay for 2 sets. Players never have to sit for more than 3 games but everyone will have the opportunity to play 6 games in a row. It should allow everyone an opportunity to get in stroke. Play as long as you want as long as all 3 players are given the same opportunities at the table. Tally your wins. Player with the most wins takes home the cash.

3 lines of 4 ball for 3 players should play within the 3 - 4hr time frame,
even with the 2 rail lag to get en-play.

a buck........heck, you would have shoved that much into a coin op table.......at the end, all the losing
money goes into a pot and then the 3 of you spend it on some food & drink afterwards.....the guy who
lost the most games winds up buying most of the food since he donated or contributed the most cash.

I think your suggestion is excellent. Plus, they can customize it by +/- balls, or making it rotation.

I'm being half serious... I had a blast one time with two pool
buddies, we played Cut Throat, but you had to shoot in rotation,
you can play safes, etc. The rotation aspect makes it way more
interesting.

We have a semi-monthly scotch doubles match. Here's what we do if one can't make it. A plays one game as a single against B and C as scotch double partners. If A wins, he posts a game won. If he loses, no one posts a win. This prevents a scotch doubles partner from throwing the game to prevent the other from winning if they're already on the hill. Then B plays A and C and finally C plays A and B. It continues in round-robin fashion. We usually go to 9.

If you like scotch doubles, it's great and prevents anyone from having to wait around to play.

Just to be clear we are looking for 3 person tournament format, not 3 person game.

King of hill is a format we tried, it works ok.
Sets of 3 games it's good option, you can get in stroke and waiting is not that long.
A vs B+C also is interesting.

That seems to be all options if we are talking about tournament format, and not a game.

This format we will try first.

It seems that it suits our specifications. After group stage two players with most number of winning frames will play the final for the cash.

We have this format which is similar to some mentioned in this thread.
Basically its race to 2 (8b, 9b, 10b, doesnt matter), players post bet before every single game where winner of each game stays at the table, loser is confined to the chair and hopes that the newcomer wins so the pot is not won by the winner of previous game. Usually we play it the way that newcomer has the break so it is harder to actually win that race to 2. That way the pot can rise to really interesting amounts before anyone snaps it off :grin: And all 3 have a blast, its a lot of fun how loyalty of players changes after every game

I have a few friends that like to do this:

Draw pills for the game:

1 is 9 ball 3 ahead.
2. Is 10 ball race to 3.
3. Is 8 ball race to 3.
4. Is str8 pool to 45.
5. Is 9 ball bank, one point per ball to 9 points.
6. is 1hole race to 2.

Sometimes it may be as many as 7 of us. We rarely have to wait more than 30 to 40 minutes or so as most of us runs balls pretty regular with the exception of one person. He gets the wild 7 in 9ball, wild 8 in 10ball, 25 points in str8 pool, 5 points in banks, 10/5 in 1hole and 1 game on wire in 8 ball with breaks.

We keep it cheap and play very offensively by not playing safe except in 1hole. It's a lot of fun.

3 handed golf is a very bad idea. One player will ALWAYS be in the middle.

Golf, or rosie as some call it is better played head up or with four or more players.

With at least four players if one of the four is a lot stronger, well he will be a target the entire game.....lol. lots of fun though. Especially on a snooker table.

Yeah, it's interesting.. you have to look at two different rotation orders, and
you can shift between the two.

In essence you're running 8-10 balls in rotation with a lot of traffic!
