30-inch, or 29-inch shaft?

My old '79 Richard Black is a 59" cue because of 30" shafts. When Richard last had it, he mentioned that he normally prefers to split his cues equally; however he verified those were the original shafts to the cue, made by him.

It ends up being a rather rare cue!

But to answer the question, he, and most all other cue makers prefer / suggest / recommend / insist the split be in the middle.

I have predator le5 that i bought an extra shaft for these are the pre cat 314's I picked up a 30" 314 cat shaft and can tell no real difference in playing other than a mental one of being able to reach an inch further on the table.
I only play on 9' tables.

I did not notice the shaft being any less stiff than a 29" shaft.

South West cues are not equally split. Many people rave about how they play. It might be due to the longer shaft taper.

I've been told length should be equally split between the shaft and butt (29.5" shaft 29.5" butt for a 59" cue) or it changes the dynamic of the cue too much. Is it always preferable to split equally, or is it OK to stick a 30" shaft on (I said "ON" poolplayer2093) a 29" butt?

long cues

Mike Davis plays with a 29" shaft and a much longer (+2 or 3 inches) butt, or at least he used to. He told me he loved it. I don't remember the maker.
I have experimented with butts up to 33"(!) with 29" shafts for really tall players. Everyone loved the playability and balance.
One obvious advantage beside how well they play is that you can use any standard length shaft.

Im 6'2 and last year I went to a pool school to correct my stroke... I was playing with a 58" cue and during my session the instructor kept moving my hand back farther on the butt till the point most of my hand was off the wrap which was kind of annoying to me. When I got home I decided to to buy a 30" shaft. I still shoot with a finger or so off the wrap but Im much more consistant with my hand that far back. Guess he was right! It did take a month or so to get completely comfortable with a longer shaft.

I only build 60" cues now. Tall AND short people like them! The only problem that I've come across is the players with cheap cases cannot fit the 30" butts in them. I use a 3/8 X11 pin that sticks up quite a bit.

Mcdermott Shafts

The "I" series of shafts from Mcdermott are available (special order of course) in 31" length (OB and Predator only offer 30"). Just got one and I am loving it! (I'm 6'7")

When you move your hand up the butt to maintain the "correct 90 degree elbow" it does change the ballance "feel" of the cue! Still getting used to that!

These shafts are also lighter then a wood shaft so the extra length is offset.. Seems stiffer than my 29" standard mcdermott shaft..

I have a 3x6 whitten case, and my cue doesn't fit in. So I've bought a chip one :)

I am 6' 3'' and play with >61'' cue, and it feels great.

One more note on my shafts, the 30 inch shaft balances out at 19 7/8 from the base of the rubber bumper. The 29 inch is 19 1/4 from the same area. The difference in balance does not feel that much different, I have not taking them to my wife's lab to weigh them yet, maybe this weekend..

Old thread might start new one since a lot of new materials on market….specifically carbon fiber.
seems MFG and retail sites on web like Seyberts offer shafts at 29 and 30’’
I am contemplating getting a new shaft for a tiger cue I have, so deciding on specs.
Am leaning on a tiger LD ‘Fortis‘ carbon at 12.5 mm and 30”.

28.75" to end of ferrule on Cynergy 10.5mm shaft.
29.5" to end of ferrule on Rhino 10.5mm shaft;
I do not notice a difference.
What I notice is more pro taper in Rhino than Cynergy.

I didn’t read all the reply’s, but I believe the cue length mainly has to do with the size of the table you mainly play on. Personally I think if you play well you can adjust but if you play on a 7 ft bar table you don’t need a longer cue but if you play on a nine footer the length helps.

Interesting read. My Joss is a traditional 58 length, even split.

But I have a Huebler H-14 29 inch butt with 29 inch original shaft, and two 31 inch original shafts. It's second, after my Joss, as a favorite player...and I like it better with the 31 inch shafts!

Why? I don't know.

I have several 60 inch cues I like.

I think there are too many player and cue variables to get a standard answer. But it is always an interesting conversation.

I am only 5 foot 6 by the way.
