30 minute time limit

2 weeks ago I competed in a 9-ball tournament with a 30-minute time limit per match with a race to 5. I was ahead 4-2 when the tournament director announced that 5 minutes are remaining for these matches. I checked the time on my cell phone, which was 10:25 pm. At 10:30 pm, I was ahead 4-3. I notified the director the time was up, he doesn't go by my clock, he goes by his, which he said the bell had rung. My opponent was continuing to run out, not stopping. The director let him finish the game. That made it Hill-Hill. He broke and ran and won the match. I notified the owner of the establishment, he said he has the time limit so the tournament will not after 2: am. He agreed with the director extending the time but this is a Contradiction. What do you guys think is this fair?

How did you let a guy beat you 3 games before you won 1?:p

That's BS flat out.

I would have slowed down when he made his announcement on time. Start playing safes.

That's a dumb rule, especially w out a shot clock.

Nope, last time I'd play that tourney.

He won 3 games not only because I'm a C player and he is an A player but he had control of the table, playing a safe, and he got the ball in hand.

When the announcement was made I was never back at the table, Thanks for your reply.

Its not clear here if the 8th game was in progress or not when the time limit was up. If it was then it’s 100% fair. If it wasn’t and it was 4-3 when the time limit had been reached then the tournament director isn’t fit to be in charge. These are two very different eventualities.

You are so right, I got ripped off. I asked other excellent A players, they also agreed with me. Not fair.

This is irrelevant.

See, that my friend is what's called a joke or a fun jab. See the emoji.

The only way I'd play in such a tourney is if there is a standing 30 minute clock that everyone can watch countdown, plus a shot clock. Which could be done by a couple players not playing, one watching the shot clock, one watching the table and notifying on low time.

When the clock hits zero from a 30 min countdown, it should be predetermined if a player can continue their turn if they are making shots or if they stop immediately.

I'm all for speeding up tournaments. It's what I hate the most is how slow they go.

Yes! All the tourneys here go till 4am; I just can’t do that.

If they’re going to have a dumb and unusual rule like that, they need to be really specific about how it works. It sounds like they were just making it up as they went.

That's ludicrous. No fn way. Even if I walked in knowing I had a solid chance at taking it.

There's a local tourney by me that goes till about 1:00 am at the v least. I've been there playing at that time, it sucks. I'm just like, let it end. Starts at 7pm.

Got a Sunday afternoon tourney I'm gonna start playing.

sucks .. but I would never play a tourney with a stupid rule like that.....

Meh. I like playing by goofy rules, as long as the individual player has no artificial constraints about playing within those boundaries.

When i was around 21, I used to play in a race to one 8 ball bar tournament, where there was no ball-in-hand for any reason whatsoever. It only took one smart player in the tourney playing a couple of "goofy" safes on me until I adapted the same strategy, but being naturally inclined to strategic thinking, I was much better at it. The next time I play Mr. Smarty Pants, I had him tied up in knots, and he didn't like it.

Each new set of rules is an opportunity to expand your strategic thinking.

That being said, OP is a C player who was playing an A player. Frankly, even having a whiff of a chance at winning should have made him quite happy. In a "normal" tournament with "normal" rules, he has a much lower chance of winning even a short race.

A 30 minute time limit for races to 5 is a bit severe and unrealistic, and leads to situations where a player who is leading the match potentially stalling to run out the clock. If it goes hill-hill it's a 9 game match, so you'd have to average less than 3 minutes and 20 seconds per game to complete it in under 30 minutes. Even if you consider 30 seconds for racking (which is fast), that leaves 2:50 per game! 45 minutes would be more realistic a time limit, in my opinion as a TD for our weekly handicapped 9-ball tournaments for the past 23 years. If he really wants to speed up the tournament, change it to races to 4 instead of 5.
