32 Men Left Standing: Friday 2013 U.S. Open 9-Ball Thread

Well, I got to bed early and wake up to find a completely different player roster than I had thought. That said, we have 8 men left on the A side and 24 men left on the B side of the charts.

On the winner's side:

Shane Van Boening v. J. Sossei. Man, I don't know who this kid J. Sossei is, but after his fine runner-up finish to Earl Strickland at the recent Joss Turning Stone, he's a man on a mission. This should be a great match.

Niels Feijen v. Oscar Dominguez. Let's hear it for Oscar. Another young player who's on fire in recent times.

Jayson Shaw v. Johnny Archer. From the way Johnny's beeing hitting 'em, he's going to be hard to beat this year, but Jayson, with his recent sponsorship of Str8tShots, is having a very, very good tournament. This is the Old Guard versus the New Guard here, and it's anybody's guess who shall win.

Chris Melling v. Mike Dechaine. Mike is burning up the charts with fast matches, wasting no time. Good luck, Britain fans, because Mike Dechaine is in the house. Just as an aside, Karl Boyle called Chris Melling "Tubbsy" on FB after Melling defeated him.

In the losers bracket, we have 24 men in the wings. This is their last shot at reaching the finish line, so they are going to be giving it their all in what may be some hard-fought matches:

Boston's favorite child, Tommy "Shorty" D'Alfonso v. the South's Shannon "The Cannon" Daulton, winner plays D. Mastermaker, a Richmond hopeful.

Lovable Ralf Souquet v. Lovable Tommy Kennedy -- how can you root against either one of these guys? -- plays that Greek guy who seems to have been barbecuing his opponents, (Ekonomopoulus).

Handsome Oliver Ortmannn v. Mika Immonen, the winner of which plays Karl Boyes. Oh, Oliver, give the ladies some eye candy and win.

Thorsten Hohmann v. K. Guimond, the winner plays Corey Deuel. Corey seems to have figured out this equpment at the Open this year. Thorsten or K. Guimond, whoever wins, will have a tough match on their hands against Corey.

J. Exposito v. Imran Majid, the winner plays Lee "Van-Van" Corteza. Van-Van is the lone Filipino left standing. He will have a huge fan base in Norfolk pulling for him.

Can Wang v. Canadian E. Hjorleifson, the winner plays Britain Super Star Darren Appleton. Can Wang, just going by what I have seen in the charts, plays slowly. That can knock the rhythm out of the best of players. Can Can do it? Will the Canadian veteran overcome Wang's style of play? With Darren waiting in the wings, this is going to get interesting.

Rodney "The Rocket" Morris v. Florida's Donny Mills, both rack and break mechanics, will be a good match. I predict there won't be much shooting, and it will come down to who has mastered the equipment best. The winner of this match plays the "Other Keith," from North Carolina comes Keith Bennett, the kid who looks like he walked out of a "Leave It to Beaver" sitcom. Keith is having a great tournament this year, and I know he wants to win this with all his being. I wonder who he'd rather play, Rodney or Donny.

Well, there you have it. That's the menu for today, Friday, October 18, 2013.

A couple AzB-ers who are on site at the venue reached out to me and will be e-mailing some pictures to me. As soon as I get them, I will be post them in this thread.

Icon of Sin heard me say I like Fabio, so he sent me a photo from his cellphone. Fabio is out of the tournament, but he's still my horse if he never wins a race. :grin-loving:

Thanks much for the report! i did not know women drool over Ortmann :wink:

thanks for the insightful breakdown, JAM.

Jeremy is a homeboy and, yes, he is on a mission but he'll need some great rolls to handle the South Dakota Kid. But ya never know.

Rodney ain't half the rack mechanic Mr. Mills is but I still think Rodney can shoot holes in him. Should be fun, hope it will be on stream.

I'm thinking DAZ has to be the hands down favorite to eat up the B side bracket though I'd really love to see Ralf wend his way through to the final. Big long-shot but stay tuned!

I'd enjoy seeing MD put a spanking on Chris Melling but that'll be a tall order. I'll bet MD if anyone wants to sweat it.

Get your fill of Oliver because Mika won't be letting him go any further, I don't believe.

Niels is looking like a finalist, to me.

Bold prediction: Finals - Johnny v Niels, Neils wins by 4

best,
brian kc

Sorry Brian , SVB all the way to the finish line, hungry for this win, none of who i see so far play the game as smooth as he does, as far who is 2nd, tough one, Thorsten usually is a fighter, so as Lee Van, CAN, and do not forget Rodney this guy can fool you at times!!

Interesting prediction on the finals, KC.

I have a hunch about Oscar this year. There's just something about the way he's hitting 'em.

There was a great deal of controversy about Corey Deuel not getting selected for this year's Mosconi Cup. I was a strong Dennis Hatch supporter in this regard, but after seeing Corey's performance at the Open, I realize how and why others were in his corner. He has an uncanny ability to adapt to any pool environment. This comes with seasoning, and as young as Corey looks, he's most definitely a pool veteran, a warhorse. Wishing Corey all the best this year. He's a very unassuming-type guy and never follows the Pied Pipers in the pool world. He's an independent, marches to the beat of his own drums, and I like that about him. :)

I don't know much about Jeremy Sossei, so this is a real surprise for me. I'll be clocking him from here on in. He's a contender, no doubt.

My prediction, though, at this stage will be an all-American finals: Shane v. Johnny. :)

The Eagle has landed. ;)

Here's another photo of the venue, main tournament room. The seating is sprinkled on each side. Even if there was a full house of spectators, I can't see Barry Behrman making much profit on the gate. You can see the VIP seats are ringside with chairs and a table, and the "regular' seats are on bleachers.

On a good note, I always like these pool-ball beads for keeping the score.

Picture courtesy of Karl Boyle who posted it on his FB page. He seems to be enjoying the Open this year. I hope all the players do. :)

Cool, man. Take some photos if you get a chance and post them. We back home depend on you on site to keep us updated with the latest and the greatest. ;)

Another photo from FB shows Johnny Archer wearing glasses while using his mobile device. Don't feel bad, Johnny. Keith and I both have to wear reading glasses too. :o

It is kind of cool to see Johnny using social media as a way to reach out and communicate with his fans. I like that! :)
