Wow!

Puts into perspective some of the grand viewing figures touted for pool streams!

Wow, that's an impressive figure. I would have never guessed there were that many interested viewers.

On a related note 27 people watched the trick shot finals on ESPN 3 last week.

I really wish there were more places that offered snooker tables here in the U.S. I love the game but I think the closest table to me is about a 5 hour drive. :/

Live streaming is still in its infancy and is reliable on technology becoming faster - which of course it will in time.

The real thing with live stream is no matter how good the quality is - the live show still needs to be promoted. Especially in an environment as diverse as the internet.

Av said it before - Pool needs more promoters

This is very true. Pool promotion has generally sucked to date. The only place you hear about most events and how/where to watch them is on this very niche forum. There is "no" marketing getting live pool out to the masses to attempt to gain more viewers from the general public.

One of the things that was most mind boggling about the IPT was that after all of the hype, all of the money added, all of the work to get the best players from all over the world into a premium showcase of professional pool, it was impossible to watch the bloody thing. I searched high and low for streams of it and it was simply not possible for anyone to watch the events... What an utter waste it was, they created a great event, and then no one was able to see it except for a few people who were there live.

If pool ever gets anywhere close to a 1/4 of the viewers snooker gets it would be nothing short of a miracle ,, its a better product and its the game that sells and I can assure you very few of its viewers come from the US market where the first night of the NFL draft drew much more than the total of the snooker event

I remember reading this post a few weeks ago, and thinking, "That can't be right."

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2014/05/09/32-million-fans-view-round-1-of-2014-nfl-draft/262495/

Turns out that JUST the finals of said snooker event had 10x as many viewers as the first night of the NFL draft, and a little over 7x as many viewers as the entire NFL draft.

Of course, the reason(s) for this are very simple.

espn

makes you wonder why espn doesn't just ditch trick shots and puts snooker on. it's bound to get more than 27 viewers and it would probably bring in more advertising

correction ???

The article says that is the number of viewers for the duration of the whole tournament, not just for the final match. it makes a whole lot of a difference...

Still, a remarkably good viewership. Let's hope it stays that way

You have to appreciate that snooker is becoming a popular game worldwide ... just not in the USA so much. There are a lot of people in the world, a tidbit of information that many forget by thinking too local.

True.

Ding versus Hendry years ago was one of the biggest audience ever for a snooker match, ~110 million people watched the final.

http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/sports/2007-01/22/content_789116.htm

Every time Ding is on TV i guess those are normal figures in china ;). I wonder how many people will watch snooker if Ding ever gets to the WC final.

Here is another very interesting link:

I still feel like its not impossible for pool to reach the same kind of viewers if there was a professional main tour just like snooker.

I did a google search for the most ever to view the masters golf tourney.
The best number I got was from 2012. 4.1 million. It was only a friday, but I can't believe their best sunday comes close to 330 mil.

http://tvbythenumbers.zap2it.com/2012/04/07/espn-has-record-setting-friday-masters-audience/128003/

I googled american idol views about 23 or 4 million.

That can't be right, Judge Judy draws an average of 8.2 million viewers every day. I could see the Masters world wide with 50 to 80 million viewers or more. It was not long ago they didn't even cover the tournaments except for the finals. In fact they still don't really most of the time except for Espn or the Golf channel there is only weekend coverage by major networks. Things like the Oscars draw like 40 million just in the US many times that world wide.

Yes, there were 16 broadcasts in over 80 countries. That breaks down to an average 20 million per broadcast.

Part of the draw is people bet in it.

The main thing to think of is why?
Why do the tv stations broadcast trick shots and women and almost no mens tournaments?

There are no mens tournaments to broadcast. You would have to concoct tournaments to tape and show. In other words, there is no product. The prize money would be a factor as well. Watching two guys play a final for like $15,000 to the winner does not even seem like a professional sport. The guy who comes in last on Wheel of fortune wins more then that. I would not see the public getting too excited watching it. People want to see players play for big money.
