34th TEXAS STATE 9 BALL CHAMPIONSHIPS - AUG. 31st - SEPT. 3rd

This tournament has a long history. I lived in Austin for a few years and enjoyed a few of them. This years field was as deep as any that I can remember. Congratulations to all involved !!

Hrm SYLVER played fantastic I have seen him play before, never thought he had that much game. I am a fan of winner breaks. The tables IMO were ok, new cloth was needed on most of the tables and the pockets on a few were rediculously big. I agree with a lot of what Zach said but it still was a great tournament and I will go to the next one. That was a hell of a field there wowzah. Wish I didn't play so poorly yesterday. What kind of cue was David playing with?

Eric.

Here are the actual statistics of the tournament:
Friday night: Player's Meeting started at 10:20 p.m. Over at 12:40 a.m. 115 players signed up. One player forfeited and one player WHO HAD PAID, FOR REASONS ONLY HE KNOWS, WITHDREW FROM THE TOURNAMENT. Why this player withdrew I don't know but I suspect it was due to heart problems, as in not having any, but who knows?

Saturday: Started play promptly at 10:00 a.m. I had to stop play in order to have the ladies' player meeting at 3:30 as it was not convenient to have the meeting elsewhere so play in the open could continue during the meeting. Play restarted at 5:00 p.m. My goal was to have ALL players in both divisions to have played at least one match by the conclusion of play Saturday night which I accomplished. The last match of the night ended at 11:48 p.m.
Sunday: Play started promptly at 9:00 a.m. Play continued all day until the last match ended at 1:00 a.m. Monday morning.
Monday: Play started promptly at 9:00 a.m. and continued all day until the final match ended at 4:15 in the morning.

The reasons for the tournament ending so late are simple. Eleven tables were available for tournament play. With a combined total of a 135 players in two divisions, there were 271 matches played over the long weekend. The races in the open were to 9 games on both sides and a double race to 7 on the ladies. As it takes an hour and a half for each match on average. I'll let you do the math on the chronology on that.
Also, there were an extremely high numbers of hill-hill matches during the tournament. The final reason is that I WILL NOT schedule a match to start after 12 midnight as most of the time, these matches are on the one loss side and those players are usually the ones to play the first round early the next morning.
Some people DO occasionally like to get some sleep after a long tournament day.

Normally, I keep my mouth shut about this sort of carping. One fact I have learned after running over 600 tournaments over the last 25 years is that you can't please everyone. No matter how smoothly things run, someone will get upset over something. Most of the time, that person is usually mad at themselves for the playing poorly and just looking for something to blame it on. If they have a legitimate complaint, I deal with it as best I can and learn from it so it won't happen again.

But, Zach, sounds like you didn't like the view of the tournament up there from the cheap seats!
I've always made it a rule to listen to complaints from the people who actually PAID THEIR MONEY AND PARTICIPATED IN THE EVENT! THEY PAID THEIR MONEY AND HAVE A RIGHT TO VOICE THEIR OPINION! I'm talking about the players who actually had the balls to step up to the plate, pay their dues, when they knew from the get-go they didn't even have a small chance of cashing.

As far as the condition of the tables, I personally didn't have one complaint about them from the people who actually played except from Tony Chohan about the pockets being a little to loose, but what do you expect from a world class player. This guy fires balls into pockets that I can't even see.

Zach, there is a term that is used in the military, REM. It stands for Rear Echelon M............R
The term is used for the guys that never have to risk their lives on the front lines but have all the answers. I'm sorry. Let me clarify that statement, they have all the COMPLAINTS and have none of the answers which they will tell absolutely everyone (hint: internet forums) who will listen to them instead of taking their issues quietly to the people who actually make the decisions. Once a soldier has bled on the battle field and the reoccurring problems remain unresolved then, and only then, can they criticize and complain.

Let me know when you're going to direct your 100+ player tourney that will be run perfectly. I've come up with a couple of names for it. The Fantasy Land Tour or The Magical Mystery Tour. You have my permission to use either.

I'd like to see what the view is from way up high in the cheap seats. Personally, I don't think I'll like the view. I'd rather see the view while I'm playing in the tourney.

I promise you one thing though. if I have a problem, I'll bring it to you first since I've been there and done that as far as running tourneys. I guess that's the difference between you and me.

Well, yes, I mean , what I'm trying to say is that maybe, well you know if things were, well, you know what I mean, what he said.

Actually, they said they liked the speed of the tables. That's what I was referring to.

I don't kiss anyone's ass, I speak my mind, also, but I also remain professional about it and can make points without being rude. You should listen to some of the other posters... it really is good advice.

To be honest, the more you talk $hit about other pool rooms and tournaments makes me not to want to play in one of your tournaments. Not that you care if I show up, I'm just trying to make a point that the rude comments will reflect badly on Diamond Billiards and the tournaments you run.

Yeee HAAAA!!!! Go baby Girl Go!!!

A friend of mine named Pat Fox used to play in Austin in the early 1970's. Some of the better players then were Bastrop and Roger Griffis, he also talked about Ochoa. Could this be a relative of the current champ? A couple of old rooms then Webb's and Hyde Park?

I would personally like to thank Melinda for all of her support and help not only for the Open but for all of it over the years. Thanks for everything.

Oh, and by the way, you now have one free "STALL FOR TIME" ticket with me at any future event. Thanks for being a great sport about that situation.

I owe you, lady!

If your talking about David Henson, he plays with a Meucci Original. David G, I don't know what he plays with. I'm sure someone on here knows...

Hmmm...wow...cheap seats....Last time I checked I didn't pay to come in(guest of players) BUT I did pay for a hotel for four days and food (but that didn't cost anything did it?)...Anyone has the right to not to play and I didn't...and yeah I withdrew....big whoopy...I'm not ready for a tournament like that amongst other physical issues I'm having so take your lame rant and rave and shove it...

You can set times for matches if you have the equipment to do so...but not with what ya'll had available...I mean like for example ya'll told David to be there at 4:00 and he didn't play until 9:00...now that's a prime example...And another thing I wouldn't try to run it at Diamonds because of the space...Even though it'd be possible but you'd have to keep everyone there the whole time..

Very nicely put Stones and you made some excellent points! I am one of those players that stepped up knowing I didn't have a chance this time around, but I have the cahona's to walk the walk and this is just a step in the process. I went 2 & out, but you never heard me complain, because I lost the match.

You did a nice job running the tournament & I appreciate your letting match start an hour earlier on Saturday night (at 10 instead of 11) and I am in favor of a race to 9.

Sincerily,
Ricky:D

Zach, you are teetering on a very fine line. You have a lot of nerve telling Paul to shove it. You may see him again in person some day and he has a very good memory. What on earth for example would you do if he became a bit angry over all this negative bullshit of yours. I know, most likely end up on your fat ass.

Please stop with the big time TD expert, I'm Mr in control attitude. It just doesn't fir and nobody on this planet is buying into it. The only thing you can beat Paul at involves the Bakery.

You know, this was a nice place to post about upcoming events and promote pool until you came along. You have just about ruined it. What am I trying to say? There are a lot of nice people here who have given a lot to the the game and deserve respect for their efforts and sacrafice. You continually try to get attention and demean them and in that process have lost about all respect anyone has had for you. Who have you not attacked in one way or another and name one who has come to your defense?

I take offense because Paul is hands down the best TD in this state and worked very hard to do the best job he could this weekend under some very cahllenging conditions. He shoul be comended for what he did, not chastised by an Amatuer who can't put on one single successful event.

If David was upset with things, I'm pretty certain he knows me well enough to come straight to me and voice his opinions without shaking the trees.

You though can get upset and run you big mouth at me all you wish though because as of now, you will be the first to go on my ignore list and I suggest everyone else on this forum does the same thing. Maybe things can get back to normal.

Your a f&#king Aes!! You mouron, just because you run around with David G. you think you are the sh_t? I'm not saying anything one way or another about David G. because I don't know him, but from what I've heard he's a jerk, so that would make ya'll pretty much the same (if that's the case) & I can see how ya'll would get along just fine. I don't know why he would run around with you, unless your his money man?....BINGO!!!

If you know David, do you know Dusty that died about 8 months ago?

David is not a jerk by any means whatsoever. In fact, he is a pretty nice guy and very sown to earth type of guy. He's not loud or consumed with himself, just kind of quiet.

I've been on road trips with scores of players and David is very easy to travel with. Like I said, just a down to earth type. To associate him with Zach is not fair at all. FWIW>

My apology, like I said I don't personally know him so I was going by someone else, but Zach needs to grow up, were all in the pool family together & I can't understand why Zack feels the need to One Up everyone and bad mouth good people like Stone?

Understood and I just talked with David about this. He is just fine. Guilt by association does happen. Like I said, David is a good guy.

Some people try and stress thier importance by constantly beating on others they are jealous of. Sones is a great TD and gives it his all at every single event. Is he perfect? No, he snores too loudly when I'm driving down the road, but after 5 years and 8000 tournaments I'm gettin used to it. We have another 8000 to go, so I have no choice.

Some go through life begging otheers to be as miserable as they are. There is an old thing called image VS. self-image. The way we see ourselves and how we want people to see us, and how others actually seel us. The wisdom is to know the difference. Beating others down to stress our own importance is called self-serving and as Dr. Phil says, 98% of sefl-serving statements are dead wrong.

This will be my final word on this subject.

Man, Zach, I think if you came across a pot of gold in the middle of the road, you'd bi...h about it being too heavy. I got an ex-wife that gripes less than you. LOL

You come on here with all of this "The players said this, the players said that, about everything from the seeding, tables, smoke, table time format, etc. Well, it looks to me, with you running around jabbering about every little thing (that you had nothing to do with in the first place since you didn't play) to anybody who will listen. What are they suppose to say with you stirring the pot constantly? Before you come back with "I'm just reporting the facts." BS, think about it.

Maybe, if you'd have played, you wouldn't have had time to be the social gossip butterfly. Just kidding.

Believe me, bud, if there is anything with a negative aspect to it that I want the entire pool world to know about, I know who to come to spread the gossip. LOL

If anyone understands about physical issues and not being able to play when they want, it's me. Old age is a true bummer. So, get healthy and come back firing.

Just don't forget what you said to me about the field when you came up and asked for your entry back. That's why I made the comment about heart.

How come it's rah, rah, rah with anything you're involved in at the time (Diamond Billiards, tournaments, etc.) and blah, blah, blah to anyone else (pool rooms, owners, players, tourneys, etc.) who's trying to do something good for pool in this state?

The other tour directors, room owners, Lewis and myself around the state are trying to do something positive for the game. We work very close every year on our schedules for the good of the sport. Because of this close relationship, Texas is now a haven for great tournament play and attracting some great players to our great state.

Bud, I see you're trying to do something at Diamonds in Dallas with tourneys and I think it's great. The more, the merrier. But, unless we all work together in a very positive way, it could all end very quickly. You may not remember the dark days for tournament play after the collapse of the Mcdermott Tour in the mid 90's, but I do.

So, what I'm saying is, DON'T COME ON HERE WITH ALL THIS NEGATIVE BS! ALL YOU'RE DOING IS RUINING YOUR OWN REPUTATION AND HURTING THE SPORT IN THIS STATE IN GENERAL!

Now, the comment on you telling me to shove it. Being the true gentleman I am (LOL), I feel there is only one way to settle this. I would have pm you about this or talked to you like a man in private, but since you seem to like airing your dirty laundry in public, the forum will do just fine.

I'M CALLING YOU OUT! You go get every dime you got on the planet. I'll match it and we'll play say, a 10 ahead set for all of it.

I'll even play you at your home court, Diamonds Billiards, since there doesn't seem to be other table in this state good enough for you.

UNTIL WE PLAY, YOU CAN TAKE ALL YOU'RE NEGATIVE BS AND SHOVE IT BACK WHERE IT CAME FROM!

Until then, practice hard and keep your mouth shut. Let your cue do your talking for once.

For the last time, we can all try to work together for the betterment of the sport or not. The ball is in your court.

Your friend,

Stones
