i got into the wood pin carom cue by way of a customer that wanted one cue he could use for both. he wanted a cue butt with a wood pin, a pool shaft 13 mm 29 inches long, and a carom 27 inchs with a 9 1/2 mm tip. that is what got me started with the wood pin in a pool cue. in the last few years its about all i build, unless a customer requests a metal pin or if the wood is very light and i need the extra weight. i do not like to use weight bolts because i do not like a butt heavy cue. i will sometimes use weight in the middle of the cue handle.
you ask for my opinion, i believe the most crisp- best feedback hit i have found in a 2 piece cue is a wood pin, no joint rings, flat faced joint, no ferrule with a carbon fiber pad, and there are a few different tips to fine tune the hit.
the drawback to this set-up is the .42 inch hole in the shaft to accommodate the 1/2 inch pin. this shaft without a ring might split and ruin the shaft. i have one i have played with for about 2 years and no problems, but will not sell one without a ring.
