425- 450 to spend on a cue. What would u get?

I am looking to replace a Meucci 97-21B that I had when my dad was still around and was selling cues. I picked the 9721b because well It only cost me 300 dollars buying through him. The only other cues that I have shot with have been Meucci Sneaky Pete. I am looking for something new and would like to stay with a wood to wood joint unless someone can tell me why they would go with other. I don't want to spend right now any more than say 425-450 on a cue..A couple people on my league team shoot with Lucasi but I had not shot with any of theirs yet.

The reason I am replacing is well the shaft has become badly warped, I know I can replace the shaft with a blackdot for about 150 dollars but was thinking of new cue. I shoot in APA and am a sp 4 in both 8 and 9 ball.

So what's your input?

What would I do?

Call David Schmelke and tell him I want another one of his cues.
For $425-450, I would tell him that I want a:
4 veneer ebony into birdseye maple full splice 60" cue
Juma joint collar with black phenolic rings.
3/8x10 G10 joint pin
Juma hoppe ring with black phenolic buttcap
Add a matching ebony smart pro extension
Two matching 30" maple shafts with 15" pro tapers

And I would still probably have some money left over.

Yes I am in Birmingham, AL. Shoot out of Bumpers and live in McCalla. I would be interested in seeing some pictures or seeing some of the cues you have. Not sure how any of those feel /balance. All I have shot with were my 2 Meucci

If you play at Bumpers have David Rowell build you one, I have had over 50 cues since I started playing and his are the best I have ever hit with.
 
to the op:

There have been many threads here on az over the years and I will provide you with cliff's notes on the results.

best production cues:

schon & pechauer win by a large margin

these two brands are always 1st and 2nd and the order changes but they do not:

sneaky petes in your range: L'il Al Romero ($300ish) & Tim Scruggs (low end $450ish) both of these play brilliant.

Customs can be found in your range that will play as good as a $3k custom but won't be fancy: Pat Diveney & Jeff Olney cues are always given very high marks by *many* people.

keep in mind, it's all very subjective.

with that said, you now have a basic guideline of what most people say they like.

Andy Gilbert jump/break cue. They do it all equally well....play/break/jump....and hold their resale value very well, too.
 
Lots of really great options in that price range, you can get a killer cue for that price. My suggestions:

Olney plain Jane
Diveney sneaky
Gilbert j/b (they really do play great!)
Rat
Frey sneaky


I really don't think you could go wrong with any of those options, all will have a big pin wood to wood joint.
 
I'd offer me 450 for a sneaky that I have available, then I'd hummm and haa and bargin hard until I got me to settle less. But that's just me, I can be pretty tough.
