I have both of ER's One Pocket books and through the years I have gone over them both many times. I treasure them. WOP is great for the stories and the systems. I love that the books were leather bound. It gave them class, but at the same time that made them difficult as instructional material. To bring them to a table and set up the various scenarios was cumbersome. This was the reason my book was spiral bound. One learns from those who came before. I believe a great deal of the difference between those books and mine is in how my book is presented. It is quite literally, a workbook whereas I would define ER's books as references. A small distinction maybe. Some claim to like the top down B&W illustrations. That's fine, others may like the color photos better.
All the systems in WOP are now available in countless books and internet sites. At the time of publication this information was not available. The stories are wonderful. They are fun to read and offers great insight into the minds of some of the greats during One Pocket's golden years. The stories alone are worth the price one must pay for a copy of the book and you are right, the value will still be there years from now.
I have no systems in my book. Why rehash material which can be found everywhere and in a variety of excellent formats. I saved the space for information not readily available. Game theory, risk reward, playing the score, and practice drills which are sure to enhance a player's ability to tackle difficult situations and inspire a stronger One Pocket imagination are but a few of the ideas I cover within its 200 + color pages.
Now WOP and SMS rightly are hits among One Pocket enthusiasts. Still, it is my opinion that my book offers insights which SMS or WOP either had not touched on or did not delve deep enough into, and I provide this at an affordable price. I have sold in the neighborhood of 1,000 copies, mostly here in the States, and dozens overseas. The response has been 100% positive. Sales continue at a steady pace I am happy to say.
Since it was brought it up, Scott, Danny, Tony, Grady, Jose, Cliff, Efren, Nick, Francisco, Shannon, and a host of others have known me for many years from either tournament play or gambling matches. I have wins against many of them and I know I have their respect just as they know I respect them. That is why several of them have endorsed my book. My book is not competing with these gentlemen as to who has the better solutions or a who has a stronger understanding of the game. My book is an extension of thought, a fresh perspective if you will. Accept it as that or leave it alone. That said, I would match my knowledge of the game with any one of them.
