Which break do you use?

Side break to make the 8 hitting the 2nd ball or the "middle" break and why

I noticed at qlympics everyone was using the middle break.

Because unless they made an exception, making the 8 on the break at Qlympics was not a win. According to BCA, the player can ask for a rerack and break again or have the 8-ball spotted.

Besides, most of the better 8ball players are more concerned about getting a good spread and making a ball. They're going to break such a way that is best suited for that.

I start with the middle break because it's personally a more consistent break for me. Especially keeping good shape on a second shot. If it's not sinking a ball or two consistently then I'll switch to the side break.

I use the centre table scatter break as If you hit the 2nd, 3rd or 4th ball you are liable to jump the cb off the table plus the scatter break if executed properly will make a ball on the break 9 times out of 10.

when I'm crackin 8-ball it's hey diddle diddle straight up the middle
It helps me keep a leash on the cueball and I get better distribution than when using a 2nd ball break

I use the second ball break from the side because 8 ball breaks do count in our league as a win and I still get a good spread from it. I can also keep the ball in the middle of the table most of the time.

I use the second ball break to start. It doesn't open the balls as good and I have to work harder to earn the win but I don't mind. I'm pretty consistent with making a ball, but I leave al lot of work to be done.

If I happen to build up a fair lead then I might consider changing to breaking from the front, opening the balls much better, this will make my work a little easier. If I start a match with the straight on break, and playing a good player, I can't afford to break dry. A good player with a good break will send me home early.

It depends on the type of table I'm playing on.

For bartable pool, I go side rail/2nd ball break 100% of the time (unless the table has a big or heavy CB). I make a ball consistently, get good position, and a fairly good spread.

For 9' pool, I go side rail/2nd ball break probably 75% of the time because I make a ball consistently, get good position, and a fairly good spread. If that isn't working, I'll go out in the middle...but the probability of a scratch sky-rockets.

I do 2nd ball off the side rail almost 100% with low outside. Only exception would be with a big CB or a table with dead rails. Make a ball or two consistently, have a decent 2nd shot, and pop the 8 in the side about 1 in 15, sometimes better on a 7-footer.
