8 ball Situation (3): What Would You Do Here?

Playing 8 ball, you have ball in hand. You can put the cue ball anywhere on the table now and you are trying to run out the table

1, Which would you choose, stripes or solids?
2, What is your plan? Which is the first ball you will shoot?
3, What are the potential problems and how do you solve them?

8 Ball Pattern

I would:
Chose lows. Shoot the 7 in the lower left corner to get an angle on the 4, for the upper side pocket. With the 4 open up the 8 and then go after either the 5 or the 2. Then 6, 1, 3 and 8.

I would chose stripes and run it like this:
1) Roll the 12 to low-left corner with follow, getting shape in the middle of the rack.
2) Soft cut the 15 in the lower left corner, trying to get straight on the 9 in the upper side.

3.1)Were straight or to the right side of the 9(going in the upper side). Make the 9 & draw to get shape for the 14 in the same pocket.
3.2)We're on the left side of the 9. Shot the 14 first and either use the 2 to stop the cb or just kill it with draw, getting shape for the 9 in the lower side pocket.

4.1) Make the 14(draw) in the upper side try to get straight on the 10 to the lower side pocket.
4.2) Make the 9(draw) in the lower side and try to get straight on the 10 to the lower side pocket.

5) Make the 10 in the lower side, get shape on the left side of the 11 for the upper right corner pocket.

6) Stop/Stun shot on the 11 in the upper right corner. Since we are on the left side of the 11, the cb move toward the right side pocket, giving us a ~40 degree cu on the 15.

7) cut the 15 in the low-left corner pocket going two rails around the table to get shape on 13 in the lower side pocket.(If we went 3.2 and bumped the 2 this might get tricky, since the 2 might be in the cb path)

8) Make the 13 in the lower side & the 8 in the upper left corner.

8-ball 101 ...

At first glance , the 2 and the 7 are problem balls .....I would shoot the 12 .....and then run out ...

I like dfweyers decision to go with the stripes and the 11 ball, however I would just add to start with the 13 ball and play shape to play the 11 just like he did. I don't like leaving the 13 ball on the other side of the table with only access only to the side pocket.

The solids also are workable but not as good as the stripes.

I'll start pocketing the 11 to the right side pocket, stopping the CB in the process and lining up for a possible combo on the 10 to the 15 to the left corner pocket. after pocketing both balls, I'll pocket the 14 in the rightside pocket, stop the CB and pocket the 9 into the leftside pocket, drawing the CB a little enough to cut the 12 into the right corner pocket and land the CB straight to the 13 into the leftside pocket. stop the CB in that process and you will have a straight in shot on the 8 to the right corner pocket.

In cuetable I never miss a ball or a position. Considering the balls on this table take up more space than real balls, and the 9 passes the 2 into that corner pocket, I start with the 12 and work my way in a circle around the table.

no easy answer

Still working on diagramming shots with cuetable.

I play the 14 in the upper side pocket,gently nudging the 8 ball.From there I like the 12 ball or the 15 next.

I prefer to move the 2 or the 8 with the ball-in hand shot since I can control the angle

the pockets I am calling are based on the diagram. open table ball in hand


stop shot on the 14 to the upper right corner

15 bottom left corner with follow and a touch of reverse english get the cue ball cross side behind the 12

12 in the bottom left corner with draw float down behind the 13

13 in the side with a touch of follow should leave you the 9 in the upper left corner

9 in the upper left corner with a touch of draw trying to leave a stop shot on the 10 ball

10 in the bottom left corner with hopefully a stop shot but trying to keep the cueball in the general area leaving the 11

11 in the top right corner with just a touch of follow leaving the 8 in the upper left corner.

thats how I would try to do it..

Edit: I swear I did not watch the video first... I didn't play the same pattern anyway .. but I like that I started in the right place :)

yes it was in both...if you try to run stripes.. and not take the 14 first .. you tell me how to get a good line on it... because I cant find one.. in the video or on the layout..

In the op 14 goes in the upper side pocket. In the video it only goes in the upper right corner. That's the major difference imo.

Yes sir, and a small difference will change the pattern completely.

Indeed the 14 ball is a little further way from two other balls in the layout. :)
