Try this, on a bar box, Diamond box is probably the best way to go. Rack a ten ball rack, run 9...leave one out as your break ball.

I have done it on a big table but never a bar table. i will definitely give it a try next time I am on a bar box.

Have you ever tried 20.1 on a big table. Marop tried it once and ran I believe 80 something balls.

I recently played 14.1 on a bar box (standard Valley with Simonis) and ran a 40, 46 and then 56 in all within a few attempts of each other. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say I felt as though I would never miss (each run ended with a scratch, not a miss). I was using shots as break shots that aren't even break shots---- and shooting 3 ball combos, ya know -- stuff like that. I tried a few 9.1 on the Valley and I found it harder - fewer options. I didn't feel the congestion was a detriment on the Valley -- it was a bonus.

Now, I also tried it on a Diamond and it was a different experience. 9.1 would be the easier and 14.1 would be the harder (the pockets aren't black holes).

So, I think the type of bar box determines the best way to play (9.1 vs 14.1).

I agree -- the barbox itself can dictate whether all 15 balls, or just 10 balls, is more applicable. For me, the Valley barboxes are a blast (quite literally) with all 15 balls in play. During the Christmas holiday season, I often visit my folks out in Denver, CO, and there's a place nearby (Greenfields Sports Bar) with a bunch of Valley barboxes that, on certain days of the week, they'll remove the side panels from and let you play for free all day. I like to go in there on those free pool days, and because the side panels are removed, you can play any game you want without the annoyances of coin drop. 14.1, One Pocket, having to spot balls up, you name it. Dave's right -- after you get your stroke greased, you feel like you can't miss -- multi-ball combinations, caroms, ridiculous breakshots, basically the gambit. Runs usually end on a scratch. This past Christmas holiday, I ran a 143 on one of these Valleys, as described here:

However, on a Diamond 7-footer (I'm hesitant about calling it a "barbox" because the differences between a Valley and Diamond are *so* drastic), 9.1 is the better game. We have one of these at Iron Willies, and pocketing is more demanding than on a Valley. The cushions have a LOT to do with it as well -- the cushions tend to be softer and less springy than on a Diamond.

Any way you slice it, though, straight pool on a barbox is a lot of hip-slapping fun, especially when approached in a "watch this!" no-holds-barred manner.

Did you find 9.1 on a bar table helpful with pattern play when U transitioned to bar box 8 ball?

I think "ANYTHING".1 is very helpful when transitioning to bar box 8 ball.

People often ask why playing 14.1 is the best practice for 8ball -- when 8ball would probably be the best practice for 8ball. The answer is with 8ball, you might get fortunate to not have any clusters and pretty much have a cosmo out. With 14.1, you still must choose the pattern to run and you 100% always have to deal with multiple, multiple clusters to run out.

It's not only the practice of breaking up the clusters that translates, but the manner in which you do so (not getting stuck) that translates.

Just my humble opinion, of course.

I have never practiced 8 ball for an 8 ball event, only 14.1. Situations that come up once in awhile in 8 ball, come up every rack in 14.1, pattern play and speed are critical in 14.1.

How would you guys say playing straights on a barbox translates to a 9 footer? Meaning, if you run 100 on a valley barbox, what do you think that would be comperable to on a Diamond 9ft?

Just curious what the general consensus is.

My guess is 2:1. If you run 50 on a valley it feels the same as 25 on a diamond 9'.

JUST a total guess.

Would be interested in seeing what someone else says. I believe you have a Diamond 9'er in your basement, right? I ran in the 50's very quickly and felt if I kept going and re-trying, I think I could hit 100 before long. I could NEVER do that on a Diamond 9'er.

Honestly, it's impossible to really compare the two. It's like comparing how much harder it is to bang the Victoria Secret model versus the fat slob lady who used to plop mashed potatoes down on your plate in the high school cafeteria line.... remember her? The one with psoriasis on her left elbow?

Is it twice as easy? 10x? Maybe the fat chick is having a rough day and doesn't wanna get banged at all. Maybe she bangs YOU whether you like it or not.

How do you have to come at the Victoria Secret model in a way she never expected? Takes strategy. Pre-thought. Uniqueness and cleverness. "Hey there... you don't look so bad today! What's your name?"

It's apples and cucumbers and the two don't translate well, imo.

Easy E said you were a cool dude, I now understand why. I think some of us in the world have a way of relating to things that really opens your eyes, and very often in a hilarious way!

And its true, sometimes that fat chick just aint givin' it up, even if you're George Clooney.

Thanks. I was thinking something similar. I haven't played straights on a barbox, but I do know that 14.1 on my Diamond (in the basement, correct) is tough as hell. I think I might go play on a valley and get some confidence built up before I go back to my table.

Appreciate the input Dave. How you like Delaware?

I like your 2/1 guess, feels realistic...........
