9 Ball for 3 Players

Kracken

Belly Hooked
What do you think is a good game for 3 people gambling 9 ball? We usually play king of the hill, race to 9 or something like that, with winner breaking. I am just looking to mix it up a bit, any ideas?

Pay on the 5 & 9.
The 5 will pay less than the 9.
Say like $2 on the 5 and $5 on the 9.
Or adjust to your gambling levels.
Also, if the 9 is not made as the last ball, say by combo or carom you pay then spot the 9 and the player that made it continues to shoot.

I like that! Going to use it next time I have a couple friends come over to play.

A standard game used to be "ring nine ball". Three or more players. Draw for order. Sometimes money on the 5 or other balls. Everyone pays when you make a money ball. Shoot to hit the object ball -- no safes. Foul and the person who follows you can have you shoot again. Never, ever ball in hand except behind the line on scratches. All balls made on fouls spot up and money balls made early also spot up. (There were many variations, but those are some common rules.)

It's much more fun with more players like five or seven.

You can play “ring games” as a race to something also.

1 point on the 5 ball
2 points on the 9 ball

Play a race to 21 or whatever for whatever amount $

I used to do these as a tournament in my room sometimes.

Just switch up the order every so often.

A 3 way 9-ball ring game with $ on the 5 and 9, but only if you know the other 2 players as having the integrity not to team up on you, which is easy to do in a 3 way ring game. I’ve seen it happen many times. Also, you switch up the order every 5 games.

Another fun way is to play scotch doubles 2 vs 1, and rotate the teams 3 times so that everyone plays alone and also with each of the other two as partners. Flip coins or draw peas for the first round, then switch after each race or game.

Play liability!!!!

Whatever dollar amount on the 5 and 9balls. Let’s say $2 on the 5 and $4 on the 9.

Liability is literally the name of how you pay the players. You play normal 9ball with Texas express rules. Here’s how you handle scoring or payouts.

There are 3 players. The first person breaks dry and the second player run a up to the 5 and pockets the 5. The only player that pays him the $2 for the 5 ball is the person that broke dry because he miss the last shot.

Say the second player in this senecio run up to the 4 ball and then plays safe on the 4 ball. The 3rd player kicks and makes a good hit but the 1st player (person who broke dry) runs the 4 through 9 and wins the rack for a total of $6.

The 3rd player is the one that left the table open for the breaker to run the rack so that 3rd player pays the breaker the full $6 and the 2nd player pays nothing because the played safe and forced the 3rd player to make the mistake and gave the rack to the break.

So basically…. You play regular nine ball (safes and BIH on fouls) and the only player that pays is the last one to give up the table.

It’s the most honest and brutal ring game because it forces you to not make an error otherwise you will pay the full amount by yourself.

Also it takes away all the cheating (2 way safe and partnering) that can be classified as suspect to say the least!!

I once got into a 3 handed liability ten ball game with Tony Chohan and Amar for $5 on the 5 and $10 on the 10. I dropped )40 in less that 10 minutes and got out.

Not many can say they played this format with two juggernauts of the game on a 9 foot table with 4” pockets at Family Billiards in SF BUT… it felt good to have Tony hand me a ten before I lost. I did it for the experience and it was awesome!!!

Most fun I ever had playing pool: #1: 9 Ball Ring Games, and #2: Golf. It seems group games are less intense than heads up play.

And when someone fouls it is option to make them shoot again. And if someone scratches CB is behind the line and if the lowest ball is also behind the line it is spotted. If someone scratches on 9 and makes it then it is spotted and CB behind the line.

Ring game, 3-6-9 is a common game. Or just play winner stays on the table. Another option is to play pill pool, 15 balls, each player gets their own ball they own, no one else knows what it is. Play game like rotation 1-15 in order, players get paid when they sink the opponent ball, if they sink their own the other players all pay the shooter. Pick two pills for each player, one will be the order (lowest number goes first, etc...) the other pill is the player's ball number that is there. Fun game. I normally play when you sink your own ball the play continues, some variations you play till you sink your own ball. I like playing as long as anyone has a ball remaining in play so money can change hands a few times in a rack after a miss.

We always, and still do, play where any 9B is a win/new game, only the 5B would spot up if made early.

We used to play liability on the golf table at Hardtimes Bellflower. That was tough action. I always had fun but overall I was loser in that game. I just didn’t play strong enough. Good fun. Back when if you lost $, could go win it back in a few hours so didn’t matter-just stay in action and it all worked out. Fun times

Blasting the $ ball(s) in ring games hoping to luck them in is a great way to make $. Because your getting a great price on lucking in a ball. And the re-spot and keep your inning. That adds up over a long ring game.

This is for B players and below-not A players who figure to get out on a open table where the balls lay good.

And “honest effort” , knowing how to play that is another thing too. Haha. Lots of angles to work a ring game. Squeeze it for what you can. They are fun.
