If the other thread if close to being correct that the 8-ball only drops about 1% - 2% on the break, then it's a fact that 9-ball has too much luck in it for who the best player is. Add in the other factors like if the nine gets kicked in while shooting another ball...you win...what BS.

What is the percentage for 9-ball on the break...10%? I hate 9-ball. Johnnyt

I don't know what the percentage is. But I am coming to hate 9 ball worse than 8 ball, and I didn't think that was possible.
 
8-ball is only slightly better

I do agree that the ol' 8-ball has a little less luck in it than 9-ball. However, I think both games are not really adequate for better players. Lots of mediocre players can play runout 8-ball if the pockets are somewhat generous...or run to a lock-up safety.

Personally, I'd rather play one pocket or straight pool. :rolleyes:

8-ball has plenty of luck involved. How many times have you won a game of 8-ball by missing a shot in the end game and blocking your opponents pocket? How is that any different than ratting a ball in at 9-ball? In 8-ball, there are plenty of games where the winner is determined by the break, meaning that if you have the wrong balls it is almost impossible to win. Wouldn't you consider that luck?

I agree, I think that if your playing at a lower level then 9-ball has a lot of luck. Like...my brother will just hit the lowest ball as hard as he can and there is always a good chance the 9 will get knocked in. Slop counts in 9-ball, but not 8-ball, thats why I like 8-ball better. I think that when you get up to the pro levels, then 9-ball takes a lot more skill, because if you miss once then your screwed.
 
What difference does it matter with the 8 ball off the break in 8 ball? in v.n.e.a. or b.c.a. rules you DONT win with 8 ball off the break in 8 ball.so im not getting why you are comparing the differences.:D

8 ball wins on the break was played for YEARS before BCA or anyone else began sactioning tournaments, and a lot of people still play that way.

Because I never played you don't win if you make the 8 on the break in 8-ball in my life. Johnnyt
 
AND i dont care what anyone says ,8 ball is more of a difficult,skillfull,chessmatch kind of game.Just because most of the time 8 ball is played on smaller tables people think 8 ball is easier,NOT TRUE.If people consistantly played 8ball or 9ball on the same sized tables,8ball would be more challenging.

The nice thing here where i live(population 1 mill)everywhere you go,most people know all rules,bar,v.n.e.a. or b.c.a........just alittle jesture before each person you know what your playing.:D
oh and i dont play 9ball,i like watching pros,wish they played 8ball.

Jimmy, I would agree if the players don't have a background in Straight pool. In my experience, anybody with enough Straight pool knowledge and expertise doesn't have much of a problem playing 8 ball. As bad as I play ;), and not liking 8 ball AT ALL, I still play it pretty well when I've played it, because I learned to play pool playing Straights. You learn SO much more about the game simply by playing Straight pool, breaking clusters, moving balls, precise position, etc. All these are problems faced playing 8 ball.

Probably the reason you think 8 ball is easier.
 
Just for the record, the normally accepted odds on making the 9 on the break is about 1 in 35.

8 on the Break!

The 8 on the break being 1% cannot be accurate. I know some people hardly ever sink it, but I would sink it closer to 10%. Tonight for example I got it 3 times in a row. It's more to do with where you hit.

8 and 9 ball both have there own pressure. Straight pool is A LOT more diffucult yes, but the pressure in 8 and 9 ball is sitting there while someone gets 4-5 racks up on you because you messed up.

Just my 2 cents... :D
