9 Ball players doing well in 3 cushion tournaments. How?

I spent a few days in Hilton Head SC and was able to stop in a couple of times at SouthSide Billiards Club in Savannah GA. Jamie Sibley who is a forum member here at AZ has been trying to generate interest in the carom game by starting a monthly 3 cushion tournament on their 10 foot heated Sogard carom table. They are playing 10 points or 20 innings per match to make it possible to have a tournament on 1 table. The first tournament was won by Conrad Patenaude and yesterday the tournament was won by Jamie with Ed Wolfe coming in second.

Ed and Conrad are 9 ball players from Hilton Head who had never played a game of 3 cushion until about 6 months ago when Dan Bennicas got them in to the game with a set of carom pocket inserts. In the past 6 months Dan has developed a synthetic playing surface that goes down over the top of pool felt to simulate fast playing Simonis 300. In my opinion the results of the tournaments are evidence that the inserts and playing surface offer a serviceable alternative to practicing on a regular carom table.

By no means is this a perfect substitute, but for players like Ed, Conrad and myself we can now play both games although we only have room in our house for one table.

They look great! I'm an avid 3 cushion player, although no tables in our area, so haven't played in years. But I love it more than 9 ball. I too just took it up one day, read through some books and practiced the standard shots and position plays as well as watching a lot of match footage from Accustats and I got pretty decent quickly, having the experience from playing pool definitely helped with the basics. One of the newly remodeled rooms keeps saying they are going to put a table in but still waiting...

If I ever get a pool table in my house, I would love to be able to put some inserts in and especially change the surface temporarily as you describe. Great idea!

come see the inserts & surface

You mentioned in your post that you really enjoy playing 3-cushon. On sat. july 18 there is a tournament in savannah Ga. @ 2pm [every third sat.]
entry fee is $10.00. The tournament is played on a 10' soren sogaard heated table, about 8 to 10 players and a 9' diamond table will be set up adjacent to, with the carom inserts along with the synthetic playing surface for players to practice before their match. [Southside Billiards, Savannah ga.]

I also love me some 3c.

I urge all pool players to try it out. It is pretty friggin awesome to learn when you already have some pool smarts.

And it will make your kicking a little better too. A little, meaning worlds better!

First off, I know close to nothing about 3C Carom but what I gleaned from another thread is the diameter of 3C balls is slightly larger than that of a standard pool ball. Correct?

If so, which set of balls do you use on the Diamond table with the pocket inserts?... the smaller 3C or std diameter pool balls?

And if you weren't aware, Diamond has replaceable 3C rails for their 9-foot Pro Ams. There was a recent thread about Diamond's 3C Pro Ams if you weren't aware.

Found it... here tiz
