9 ball racking

Both the WPA and BCA rules state that the 1 ball is on the head spot the 9 ball is in the center, everything else is random. Yet it seems like most tourny's I watch, the 2 ball is always put at the bottom of the rack. What's the story?

You mean the bottom just behind the 9? This could be in losers rack tournaments, the racker is trying to play the percentages by putting the 2 in a spot that may be harder to get on.

At the GSBT the 2 ball is racked at the bottom of the rack. At the GSBT and Maxim tours they are rack your own, but the Maxim tour doesn't have a spot for the 2 ball designated.

I think it has something to do with the theory that the one and two will be at opposite ends of the table after the break. Supposed to make a run out from the break less likely?? Seems kind of silly to me.

The idea is to put some at least some limit on a player's ability to pattern rack. I believe I also saw a 10 Ball event where the 2 & 3 balls were placed in the rear corners.

I will say, I don't even know why I open my mouth at times, but I have seen this 2 ball very back of the rack rule in tournaments too. I didn't know what the op was referring to. I even saw this at hard times!! It is a ridiculous rule!! Do you know that this is actually a good spot to put the 2 if you are playing rack your own and breaking soft. I have no idea where or who came up with this, but it is totally useless, even counterproductive.

Interesting story about this. I went hill hill with a guy once when using this rule. He was racking the final game and I told him he had to move the 2 to the back according to the rule. He got so bent out of shape about it all, as he didn't know about the rule, and we hadn't been doing that up until then.. he took his head right out of the match and crapped all over himself.

Are U saying the 2 ball should be at the bottom of the rack? No sanctioning body I've ever seen recommends that. In fact they all say it should be completely random. Don't pattern a rack.

In Japan all tournaments now, I believe, are rack your own with the 2 placed at the back of the rack.

To me it doesn't make much of a difference . I think the idea is that the 2 shoots off the bottom rail and up towards the rest of the balls, possibly receiving a kick or blocked from coming back up table at all. Much more fair than racking it in behind the one giving it a clear path up table.

I like the rule. Everyone has to do it. It is not a fix for pattern racking. If you sink the one off the break there is less of a chance of getting shape on the 2 I believe.

Im just saying there are tournaments that make you rack the two in the back. I have no idea what this thread is about now.

the 2 ball right below the 9 is a disadvantage to the breaker while the 2 at the bottom of the rack is an advantage to the breaker.

Where I learned to play in the early '70s, when playing ring 9 ball with the 5 and 9, we racked the 5 behind the 1. Down the road in Endicott, NY, they racked the 5 at the back. We were told not to rack the 5 in the back because it could be made on the break if racked there.

racking

actually i believe that the 2 at the rear of the rack will in higher percentage of racks than not send it up to the head of the table but placing it behind the 9 will in higher percentage of racks leave it near the foot rail with the one either being pocketed in the side or going toward the head of the table.

Random means random...

one on head spot, nine in middle & all others random... no placing any balls anywhere specific

ditto with the folks who alternate balls in an 8 ball rack

rules say 8 in middle, one each solid and striped in rear corners and the rest random

I see it all the time and just don't bother with saying anything

Just the opposite on the first part. It shouldn't be placed there intentionally. No sanctioning body endorses it, in fact "their" rules clearly state the opposite.
The one and the nine have specific places, everything else is supposed to be completely random, last I checked.
Somehow this 2 ball at the "bottom" of the rack has become some sort of unwritten thing to do???
Spot on with the second part. "Don't pattern a fricking rack".

I just dont think you are right, the 2 gets placed in the back as much as it does any other spot. yet, if you have noticed otherwise i noted that a few td's have forced players to put the 2 in the back to stop people from getting the one and 2 uptable at the same time.

this is a lot more complicated that you think.... i can put the balls in the rack at "random" (meaning it wont be detectable) and yet still have the one and two (and three four five for that matter) go uptable. To say, "just put the balls in the rack at random" doesn't work because some players can do that and have an undetectable pattern. so, td's have foolishly come up with the rule i noted above moving the 2 ball to the back. Maybe that's the reason you saw that? I really don't know.

My only question is, what sanctioning body endorses placing the two ball at the bottom of the rack??? none. It's a lame "excuse". Every rule I've read says "RANDOM".

I don't find that to be so, the opposite, I do believe.

I like the 2 in the back because it tends to end up up table...giving a higher % of probability that you will have a shot at it, should you make the 1.

AGAIN, it's "supposed" to be completely random......right.... quote me one world class sanctioning body that "recommends" patterning the rack????

During the Color of Money match betweeen Efren and Strickland, they agreed to place the 2 in the back for all the games. Must know something about it if they decided to do that.

I have no clue about the game rules anymore, jump sticks, 80 feet long cues, 20 different pocket sizes and cuts, random racking is the rule yet there are books out about how to rack in patterns, etc... You can't play the same game of pool in 2 rooms in the same state much less have it standard all over the world.
