9 Ball Rules Question!

Yes, I have a question about 9-ball rules. I looked and looked in my rules book for the answer, but I couldn't find it. Maybe someone out there can clarify this for me.

Is there a rule (or was there) that pertains to the amount of times you can play safe against the same rail before having the OB or CB contact a different rail? I know there is a rule about this for 14.1, but what about 9 ball?

I guess it depends on the rules used. Texas Ex has this:

6.28: Multiple Safes

After four (4) consecutive safes are executed (two by each player), where the object ball is being bumped to the same rail and the cue ball strikes no rail after contact with the object ball in each safe, on the next shot (fifth), the object ball or legally struck numbered ball must be driven to another rail or the cue ball must contact a rail after contact with the object ball. Failure to execute the described legal shot on the fifth attempt will constitute a foul. The opponent must declare to the player at the table that he or she has executed four consecutive safes and the player must acknowledge. If a foul occurs, opponent receives cue ball-in-hand.

There is no rule.

BTW, good to see you Barb. In 95 degree heat last week I caught a 6 lb & 3.5 lb large mouth bass. The 6 lb was not happy & it took me bout 5 minutes to get him in.

Thanks Eric! After looking through the BCA rule book for 20 minutes again today, I got the bright idea to look up the rules in the RTC handbook and they're the same as TX Express.

There was a rule in some rule sets. The rule was recently taken out of the 14.1 rules by mistake. I think the rule should be in all games. A good rule has to be
carefully worded if it is to be applied in all games. Roughly:

A "series of repeated safeties" begins with an object ball being driven to a close cushion (within a ball diameter before the shot) and any cushion contact is only by that ball. The series is continued by the same shot (or by a foul that doesn't contact any cushion in the case of 14.1 and one pocket). The series is ended by any other ball contacting a cushion or by the object ball moving to more than a ball diameter from the cushion or by the object ball becoming frozen to the cushion. After the fourth shot in a series, the object ball is considered to be touching the cushion until some other ball contacts a cushion.​
I think that covers everything, but each time I look at the rule, there is some other clause that sneaks in.
