9 ball the Movie

The internet never fails to reinforce the fact that people today are incredibly negative. And that they revel in bringing other people down, safely behind their keyboards...

This world would be a lot better if more people could see the good in something as opposed to the bad.

(No, I don't want to sit around and sing kumbaya. Yes, I can find fault with things, and often do. But to come on here and treat this trailer with such vitriol simply amazes me.)

Sorry Dubs, but gosh, I've not seen a trailer this bad in a long time.... and after seeing that trailer I have NO intention of seeing the movie ever.

Heck, someone finally talked me into watching poolhall junkies, and I wish I had not.... but compared to this trailer, I'd give PHJ an oscar :)

Making movies is NOT easy, making a very good trailer from a great movie is a walk in the park... making a very good trailer from a crap movie is almost impossible....

Mine was a general commentary on the non-stop negativity that is prevalent here. It wasn't directed specifically at you, and of course you should speak your mind, if you so feel.

Perhaps I shouldnt open my big fat mouth and hope for some positive thoughts in this world.
Sorry if I offended you.

I'm thinking a break is in order. Wonder if I can pull it off? I doubt it.

You won't will be able to stop the jerks from getting off. And not a single one of them have seen the movie.

Great movie for sure, but .....

Eddie did hustle a couple of guys and when he beat them, they broke his thumbs. The image of the pool gambler being beaten by those he beats at the table does little for pool's image. Eddie also happily participated in the hustle of a wealthy three cushion player in Louisvile. Finally, Eddie's stakehorse, left out of some winning action in the film's final scene, threatened him with violence. The Hustler, by my account, was not exactly a testament to the integrity of pool players or those who travel in their circles.

Actually, it was the wealthy man in Louisville...the great character actor Murray Hamilton...who did the hustling. He roped Fast Eddie into playing 3 cushion unexpectedly. He was not being hustled because he knew exactly who Fast Eddie was and would never have played him in 9 Ball or straight pool.

And yet
again most guys including myself are saying how bad the Trailer looks.
So as I kinda stated before, are we not allowed to give an opinion
unless its positive?I wouldn't consider myself a ''Jerk" or anyone else
for that matter.
If you want to see it,great but from the trailer which is suppose to
promote the movie and entice me to want to see it,it didn't.No Biggie.

I said it before, and I'll say it again. It hurts to pour your heart and soul into a project, spending years of your time and effort, as well as tens of thousands of dollars, only to read negative reviews.

I read somewhere that one unnamed broadway actress refuses to read the reviews of her performance, whether good or bad. She doesn't participate on social media sites or forums like this, either. Today, she's heralded as one of the best in the business.

I hope the movie people realize that this forum will provide the harshest criticism when it comes to pool. We see things that mainstream American viewers will not, and the movie will be received differently by those who are not in the pool culture, which can be a good thing. Pool is cruel to its own in America.

I'm going to take a permanent vacation from this forum for the same reason as the actress very soon. I'm not going to announce it when it happens. When I release my pool pride and joy, I will refrain from reading one word on any social media site or forum. I don't give a damn what anybody thinks as long as I'm satisfied with the end product and mainstream America, as well.

Jennifer Baretta is one of the nicest lady pros I've ever run across. The first time I met her was at Super Billiards Expo in Valley Forge in the early 2000s. She was at an exhibition booth, and though I did not know her, she knew who I was from this forum, believe it or not. She used to be listed in the "Ask the Pros" section on AzBilliards and was an active member. She walked right up to me, stuck her hand out, and said, "Hi. I'm Jennifer, and you're Jam." Here I was standing before a pool celebrity, and she made me feel like a million bucks by just coming over and talking to me.

I'm glad to see her get some media hype. She's one of the good guys -- or I should say "gals." Pool could use more of players just like her.

Here's the photo I took of her at the 2005 SBE. She graciously allowed me to snap her picture.

Why does everyone have to be so negative about this trailer? I've watched a lot of movies and TV over the years, and sure, this doesn't look like a Speilberg production. But other than Jeanette's corny line about the tiara, I didn't see anything about the trailer that should make people crap all over this. I thought it looked decent enough, and I'm interested in seeing it.

Did you actually WATCH this trailer??? I have a hard time believing ANYONE would watch this and think "Hmmmmm. That looks like it'll be GOOD. Things to crap all over... poor writing, worse acting, bad production quality... Just because its about pool doesn't mean it worth giving a green light to. Would you watch snuff films if the 'actors' played pool between the killings???

I get that you like pool. We all do. That's why we're here on this forum. But it doesn't mean we should all turn a blind eye to crap when its staring us in the face.

I was gonna try and avoid this foolishness, but its not surprising that i can't help myself....

I'm not saying that I like the trailer "because I like pool", but I suppose it doesn't hurt. That fact probably does get my attention, I suppose.

I guess I don't expect everything to be perfection. I guess I look for the good in things, and try to not dwell on the negatives. I try to enjoy anything that I'm doing, watching or listening to. Does that always happen, no. I have walked out of concerts before, though I don't recall ever walking out of a movie, or even turning off one that I rented.

I don't think that the trailer looks that bad, again beyond the corny tiara line. Obviously I'm in the minority amoungst those who bother to post. Does this movie look like a big screen production, not to me. It looks like a tv production, and that's ok too. Hopefully the folks who made this can get it on tv at some point, and maybe Netflix.

Have a good holiday, folks.

Geez, over react much ?

You watch a 2 minute trailer, you think eh...that's doesn't look like it will be a very good movie.

So you say so. It's your honest first thought and if someone asked, that's how I would respond. Why should you HAVE to try and find the good in it , or anything for that matter. Why not just be honest about your initial feelings and opinion ?

......I have walked out of concerts before, though

I find it odd you would walk out on real live people. , with real live feeings. That's nice.

Hmm, never heard you say that before. :)

Pretty sure everyone's commenting on the trailer , if that wasn't obvously apparent.

;)

I am more than sure this thread is about the movie and NOT the trailer

I am not sure about this movie. They should have used very good but not too expensive Hollywood actor as the main, and used pros as supports. In a sports movie, the closer to reality the better, unless it's a comedy. Why not the life of one great and famous player, like Reyes, from sleeping under the table to the best player in the world? Well it's their money. They can do whatever they want.

Look,I have nothing against anybody regarding this movie or yourself.
I like watching Jennifer playing pool and love the game in general so
I'm trying to stay on topic.
When I clicked on the link you gave out,it said ''click here''to see the trailer
so I did.
I can only review what I seen on the trailer cause after seeing it
I don't have the interest on seeing the whole movie.
I understand that people have put alot of time and effort into this
which is great but if people think the trailer looks horrid doesn't mean they
have anything against Jennifer or anyone else.
This isn't a personal attack on anybody.

My first impression......Someone's Money pushing a movie with the just so happened to be good looking pool player.

This hurts me because I see how far behind mainstream America that we are in the pool world.

America wants a reality show. Look at what's on now. Just follow me around and I can point the camera to the real world. The Good, Bad and the Ugly. I promise you that. Today's new "I only play league" players don't have a clue what the truth is in their back door. It would be fun.....

Good Luck......

There was a great film that was not about Hustling. I would say the best pool movie ever and the reason it was the best was the script you have to have a great script first..
And the movie was the Hustler 1961 actually it was a love story about a pool player. Think back to the last scene when fast Eddie reveals his feelings for Sarah to Bert Gordon. Eddie and Sarah were two troubled soles who found each other and of all places a bus depot.
MCP

If you think that the Hustler was not about hustling then you need to watch it again.

AGREED!!!

The opening scene they rob the bartender. He was up $18,000 after 25 hours of playing the best ever. And the real life greatest ever was holding the stake money. I think it is safe to say anyone who fast eddy played in that movie was not getting enough weight.

What an awesome movie, now I want to watch it again!

The filmmakers even claim it isn't a movie about pool or pool hustling. It's a love story that happens to involve an incredibly talented pool hustler.

Casablanca was a love story set mostly in a cantina, but that doesn't mean it was about the cantina. It's ok to think it's a movie about a pool hustler, but that isn't the main focus of the film. We're pool players, so naturally we will want to think it is.

It's about hustling in life and how we all hustle each other on some level. Pool was the vehicle chosen by Walter Tevis to illustrate this. The screenplay differed from the book in some key elements but the essence is the same. Hustlers, suckers, winners, losers.
