If you can be comfortable with a thin solid shaft, it can rival many low deflection shafts at less cost.

It can also have a solid hit that may be desirable because it is solid wood.

It can aid aiming with less parallax.

It doesn't have to be that thin to match low-squirt commercial cues if it doesn't have a ferrule.

I think that one should not allow oneself to be convinced by the sharing of the word 'solid', that only solid wood gives a solid hit (whatever that is).

Roger Bouchet (Bouchay) from Fitchburg, MA played with an incredibly thin shaft. Back in the 60's, 70's, 80's and ?? he was a great player. He played mostly straight pool and some 9 Ball as I recall.

I went to a straight pool tournament in Fitchburg; Got there late and the score was Roger about 7 and his opponent (Red Ledger) was about 2 or 3 short from winning the game of 125 or 150. Can't remember. Any however Roger won the match and Red's score was 2 less than when I got there.

I remember him fondly. He was a fine gentleman. As a side note he had worked for Trisum Potato Chip company.

There are two(2) Hispanic individuals that frequent the hall that I do that use very very thin diameter shafts. They look like pencils. They do not speak much english at all, but I was able to get one in my hands & it was just too small in my fingers.

I'm playing OB Pro shafts with 11.75 mm tips & a European/Conical taper that I like a lot & has a solid hit & is very low squirt... but does have some as they all do... for now.

Then I have that "juiced" sanded down 12 mm tip with a smaller section & a long pro taper Predator 314 CAT shaft that is way more flexible that I will not use on 9' tables because anything but a hit a touch above center will swerve across the line & I can not detect any squirt, even when doing 'tests'.

I know it must have some, but damn if I can see it.

A thin shaft diameter likes an open bridge especially when you swipe the CB and let the shaft fly off of your bridge.:)

Yeah, but I did not get to hit any with it.

It may have loaded up & when my shoulder moved & my elbow dropped, I may have snapped it.:wink:

Somehow I just don't think so.

I know they are both fictional characters but somehow I think those two would have looked at that as being 'cheating'. :wink:

Yes, you get it! Finally someone that umderstands! Finally! It's hard having a perfect, unique stroke as such when most don't even understand let alone able to comprehend what exactly is going on. Is that what you do too?
 
9mm shaft is a little on the small side... Even for snooker.

Low squirt is overrated.

The instructor that goes by SmoothStroke here calls it "clearing" the cue or letting the cue 'clear'

I'd never heard of that before, but I knew exactly what he meant when he said it in the context of the conversation.

I sometimes do it in the swoop swoop direction & the swipe swipe direction too... then there are those in between.

Would those be the swoipe swoipe?

Yes. That's that thing. There is more than just one factor & each has an associated relationship to one another regarding the subjects of deflection, spin, & contact time.

Hence, what I think was the most significant aspect of the Squirt, End Mass, & Flexibility thread, was the seeming agreement of the phrase "effective end mass", which represents a rather complex situation vs the very simplistic phrase of "end mass".

I hope that the parties that be can keep that differential in mind when conversing regard the subject matters or deflection &/or squirt, spin, tip hardness & contact time. Somehow though, I rather doubt that that will be the case.

I think that you starting that thread & persevering through it has performed a significant service.
