we were playing 9ball and the nine was hanging in the hole so instead of kicking at the one ball i just knocked the nine in and sent the cue ball into a cluster to tie more balls up to make the run harder. Then the guy tried to tell me that it was a lose of game because i made it illegally. i can find nothing about that or have i heard that before, but it sparked my interest because he said in a pro tournament you lost the game. this move is just a foul correct?

Wow, need a lot more info here on this situation. You were playing 9 ball did u hit an OB first? And why would you worry about a run out if you hit the 9 in already? 9 Ball goes in= Game over.(if you hit the OB first)

I think that you are trying to say that you took an intentional foul by pocketing the 9 ball out of order. You did this because if you kicked at the one ball, and missed then your opponent would have ball in hand, and the 9 ball would be an easy target.

Is this correct?

I think you are correct in your assessment, and it is only a BIH foul.

I would say that it is a foul, but not a loss of game. The 9 ball should have been spotted, and your opponent given ball in hand.

Having said that, there are different rules out there. But it seems to me that your opponent is confusing 9 ball rules with 8 ball rules. If it were 8 ball, it would be a loss.

i told him it was bih but he said that in the pro tournaments it's loss of game to do that with the nine ball so we were gonna do that so i decided not to argue, but to just let him have that game and quit ahead

no i broke came up dry and he missed the one and snugged me up on the 4. i didnt feel comfortable kicking with the nine hanging in the hole

Foul....

It would only be a ball in had foul. Even if you were on the 9-ball it is not loss of game 9 spots opponent gets ball in hand.

5.7 FOULS
When a player commits a foul, he must relinquish his run at the table and no balls pocketed on the foul shot are re-spotted (exception: if a pocketed ball is the 9-ball, it is re-spotted). The incoming player is awarded ball in hand; prior to his first shot he may place the cue ball anywhere on the table. If a player commits several fouls on one shot, they are counted as only one foul.

6.1: Cue Ball-in-Hand Fouls
When a player commits a foul, the opponent shall receive an inning at the table with
the cue ball-in-hand (anywhere on the table). All pocketed balls stay down, except the
nine (9) ball. All fouls must be declared and acknowledged before the next shot is
taken. Foul calls that are not observed by the tournament director are usually decided
in favor of the shooter. Players should request that the tournament director observe
all potential foul situations. The tournament director reserves the right to resolve
any foul situations by any means necessary and may call for a replay of the game,
giving the original breaker the option to rack and break.

6.17: Strategic Intentional Foul
A player has the option to intentionally foul by shooting the cue ball into any
numbered ball on the table and into any area of the table to strategically tie up other
numbered balls. The only ball to be spotted, if pocketed, is the 9 ball. The player
must shoot using a normal stroke. If a foul occurs, opponent receives cue ball-in-hand.

And I've had people swear to me that in pro tournaments you have to call every shot. This was long before the advent of the 10 ball rules that are catching on now. Most people have no idea of what the rules really are for pro tournaments, money games, or anything else.
There are also people who will tell you that call pocket and call shot are different. They are not and never have been.

You are right, BIH. I have never seen anyone do that, and I don't think it would go over too well where I play.

Pro tournament? Does such as thing actually exist? :)

And the ones that are "pro" all use the same rules? :)

ROFLMAO

You were definately right. I have never, ever, ever played 9 ball where it is loss of game.
Key point is he is an idiot... By "pro tournaments" he probably means local bar league 8ball or something.

Everything depends on the rules! His rules, your rules, rules of the bar, Missouri rules, World rules, league rules, rules from some big burly mean sob! However, I believe most 9 ballers will say certainly you can shoot the nine in anytime and it will be spotted and BIH for opp. Done all the time! I would make an exception if I was playing that big mean sob though as he is right quite a bit of the time!! Lol

Its a BIH foul. 9 ball spots. It's not at all an uncommon play and I have seen it used in "Pro" tournys.

I have done this on many occasions and also had many opponents do it. It is BIH. The guy you were playing is a idiot.

Me too. And, I have used this shot myself and also instructed some of my league players to do this once or twice. Intentional fouls have been a part of the game for some time now. What better time than that scenario to use one.

I do not see how anyone could find it unsportsmanlike to shoot this shot, which is well within the rules (well, in MOST leagues/tournaments it is).
