Hello AZ. Glad to be a member of such a knowledable forum.
That being said I got a question on my 9 ball cut break

No matter how hard I practice my break I cant get the 1 ball in the side consistently. It usaually ends up going past the side pocket and ends up around where im breaking from. So any suggestions guys?

Should I be cutting it more? Is there a certain english I should put on it?
Any suggestions would be aprecciated

IMHO making the one ball in the side pocket is a bonus when breaking from the side. I concentrate on making a wing ball, and keeping the cue ball in the middle of the table. If the one goes in great, but more often than not, it will go one rail to the corner I am breaking from.

Hit the one square, no english, and work on controlling the cueball and you will be much better off.

I'd second that.

Don't focus on making the same ball in the same pocket on every table. Maximize how much you bust up the rack by shooting center ball on the cue and striking the apex dead on (from whatever angle you're breaking). Don't break off the spot.

Good luck!

To some degree, I tend to think that the one ball is one of the more predictable balls in the rack as far as being able to predict/control where it ends up. Which is why I try to avoid pocketing the one on the break. Finding the sweet spot to pocket a wing ball while putting the one and CB somewhat where I want it is what I work on the most.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the cut break is where you hit thee one so the cueball goes to the side rail and back to the center without english. This is said to make the one, but I'm not sure how it can be consistant. IME, the cut break, hit slow can break the balls nice and leave the cueball closer to the center of the table. Then again, I do not jump, spin and jack my cue like the pros do either.

I seem to remember

IIRC i was reading one of my various pool books, and they called this 'phenomenon' of cross banking the one off the break an equipment thing. They said that this break was developed because of the sardo tight rack being made the official women's rack, and that using that rack gave a 90-95% chance of a wing ball being made everytime, so the women's tourament made a change and had the nine ball racked on the spot instead of the one ball being on the spot. Now i know it's possible to do this in a standard rack your own with a wooden triangle that affords no garuntee.

Anyway sorry i was just wondering if that information was accurate and I pretty much have to agree with the rest of the posters. The one ball is the only "predictable" ball because you never ever know where your opponent will rack the two ball. So its probably a safer bet to make the wing ball, keep the one near the table's center with the cueball in decent position for an opening shot.

Feel free to correct me if my information is inaccurate. Just throwing it out there.

Good advice Tony!

Thanks for the tips guys. Ive been working on my break like crazy here at home and the 1 in the side is about the only thing I cant seem to do repeatedly. I can sink either wing ball and I can squat the cue ball no matter where im breaking from. But the 1 in the side I just cant seem to do consistently

I just thought maybe i was doing something wrong. Guess ill just do some more experementing.

Damn, you can sink either wing ball and squat the cue ball. Hell, why bother to make the one? You should be playin position for the one ball. Run out and repeat...........we'll be seeing you on the pro tour.

Id say just keep plugging away. And if its going to the same spot evertytime then just sink the wing ball
and play position for the one. Hope this helps

Yeah but thats only when im at home and playing in perfect conditions. Its not like that at pool halls, Thats why ive been trying to find a way to pocket the 1 more consistetly. I watched A. Fisher drop it like 6 out of 7 breaks in a match the other day and was wondering why I cant get it to go more than 1 out of 10.

If I could get a wing ball to go everytime on everytable then this wouldnt be a priority. But as we all know, every table plays different. Hence the need for as many different breaks as possible.

Try hitting half the 1 ball with draw, with the cue ball 5 to 6 inches from rail. Vary your speed and see where the 1 ball hits the side rail. You may have to move the cue ball one way or the other a bit and also vary yur speed. Keep this up until you find the sweet spot. Good luck.

did you take into consideration that the wpba racks the 9 on the spot which moves the 1 about 6" further up the table which could account for alison's more frequent pocketing of the 1 ball?

Good point!!!! I did not take this into consideration, thank you.

When the 1 ball is on the spot, I can make the 1 pretty regularly (When I'm trying too). I use the side break and I aim to hit the 1 straight at the 1st diamond on the end rail (if the rack wasn't there of course). I use a touch of low-outside to control whitey.

This technique works on all kinds of tables. You just have to make an adjustment this way or that to get your stroke down. (Amount of deflection is different for all)

Tony he asked about the cut break not breaking from the side. If you want to cut the balls. Hit the one ball in the same spot you would aim as if breaking from the side with a little low outside english. Hit it about 70% power and watch the wing ball and most likely the one go in. If you are racking your own and know a few things it's like stealing.
