I notice a few threads over the years on how to make pool popular again, especially I the states. I have a concept heavily borrowed from one of those tv channels that shows all of those cooking shows.

I believe the show is called worst cooks. based on that it would be the worst pool players. I propose 3 teams of amateurs, each team led by a pro. the winners would be best team at the end of the season as well as most improved player-mvp.

air it on a channel like hbo, epix, or any station that allows r-rated language. so imagine someone like earl or keith giving pointers while unfiltered. it would make for entertaining tv.

another idea could be same concept with celebrities. with all the people that are famous for pro sports, tv, movies, music, etc, booking celebs that are above the d-list might get the average person who knows nothing about pool to be interested.

would you guys be interested in watching a tv show like this? personally I didn't care for that tv show that was on a couple of years ago from Steinway billiards.

I would love it! It would certainly be better than some of the crap we’ve all encountered since he reality TV boom. But, it’s probably way too esoteric to be greenlighted.

I'd definitely tune in...hellofa idea

I proposed a Forged In Fire - cue makers edition.

Follows the same narrative as the blacksmith competition reality show but...
4 famous cue makers enter the work shop and their task is to build a cue, and in the end the three judges (one a professional pool player) put the various cues through testing to see who successfully made the highest performing cue in the allotted time.

The winner is the cue making champion for that show and boosts his public profile.

(Begin jokes about cue makers finishing anything on time)

But the suspense is who will have a finished complete cue by the end that outperforms the competition.

If you can attach celebrities to the show, then a cable channel will be interested. Something like this has a much better chance of getting on the air than all the hocus-pocus I'm reading on other threads about how to fix pro pool. Well intention'd threads but nothing will come of it. Just a lot of talk with no substance. A pipe dream in other words. In this case it's a glue dream.

Make each team one good looking guy and two hot chicks...added sexual interest. That would make it a real winner...

Bingo.
And what Jay said. Get star power involved.

I also thought that a dancing with the stars format would work.

8 celebrities are paired with 8 professional pool players.
Each team a woman and a man.

Each team is given 2 weeks to work together and then a tournament is played between the teams, scotch doubles 8 ball. The matches are televised. The field narrows down to a final four, then finals. Between each find is another week of working together and the drama that ensues within the chemistry on each team.

So Samuel L Jackson and Janet Lee square off against earl strickland and Danica Patrick.

The possibilities are endless.

Pool is brought back to the spot light.
Pool halls fill up with couples looking to see how they would do playing together against another couple.

I agree with all that has been said here. A lot closer to reality than what has been said in other threads. And a lot more realistic to advance pool.

The problem with what has been said in other threads is that some people are so far away from regular people not knowing anything about pool. While it would be nice for a very few to see some pro tournaments with "complicated" 10-ball rules and so on - the people out in the street have never even heard of that game. Almost anybody has shot a few balls in some bar after a couple of beers, however.

I applaud the ideas here. There would have to be some fine-tuning but I am sure the TV people could help with that.

Glue gets sold and bought everyday in this industry, anf even YOUR pool table requires glue to install the bed cloth. The problem is, there is NO glue today that comes with instructions on how to use it correctly, and i findnit funny that you would feel I'm chasing a dream when i just cashed another royalty check for the sale of my DVDs showing the world how to correctly install Simonis cloth, but the complaints i get all the time in PMs is that people want to learn how to glue the bed cloths down as a lot of the tables today with the N
MDF and particle board for the slate backing won't hold staples anymore....i guess I'll just be forced to dream my way to the bank;)

And in case anyones wondering why pool has become such a joke in this country, they don't have to look any further than this thread:rolleyes:

RKC, I think like every human you are right sometimes - in other cases you may well be wrong.

My main concern is to look at people totally unrelated to the deeper secrets of pool - the derogatory term here for them is "bangers". If you want a broad base of people interested in pool you have to realize that not everybody is reading AZB and the like. But there are millions of people who might find pool interesting enough if it were provided to them for free on cable tv or the like. A small percentage of those again would join our ranks of players with a deeper interest. And even those who would not would add to the viewer statistics on tv thus getting advertisers and sponsors a lot more interested than they are currently.

This is just my 2 Cents.

In my 35+ years of working on pool tables, and having owned 3 pool rooms, and seeing just how far pool has fallen into the toilet with social media coming of age, i think i can safely say that there isn't a tv or cable network on the market that could design a gong show of the worst players around matched up with some of the best players in the world to build a entertaining show that would draw in one single advertiser willing to spend their money just to gain some laughs. Most people today are always on the move because they can take their cell phones with them no matter where they go, and because of that, they are no longer interested in TV or cable broadcasting advertiser's, so unless you can get Netflix or Hulu interested in something like this, good luck.

T-mobile is even streaming free netflix with no data usage, i can watch movies right on my phone for free, which means i don't have to waste my time watching something i don't want to see.

Pool don't need any help promoting the the banger division of lool players, there's a glutten of them already, they're not at risk of going broke, just like the bars with coin op bar boxes are not at risk of going out of business, not like pool rooms are. And when a pool room closes it's doors, do you honestly think the players quit playing pool? Nope, they just end up playing in the bars too, right along with the bangers. No, it's NIT the amateur pool players we're losing, it's the Pro's, because no one cares about them, unless they need their endorsement by participation in order to sell something, then they can go back to where ever they come from until the next trade show or so called major pool tournament needs their participation again to sell something!!!

The problem are not the rules. Millions of people are watching snooker, while the rules are much more complicated.

Well, having several games (10ball, 9ball, 8ball,..) doesn't help.

Pool rules are also different from areas to areas and this is also a problem.

The lack of seriousness, no dress code, different table size, too many leagues, poor commentators, crappy streams, lack of sportsmanship. These added makes pool so unattractive for a casual audience.

The pool world should try to learn from the snooker world.

In my 35+ years of working on pool tables, and having owned 3 pool rooms,

That is my point. You are deeply involved in the pool community. Those that already have or had a deeper interest in pool. You have to look beyond those people.

You may be right that getting the worst players to play pros may not be the right format. The TV people might have some ideas how to make a better show.

However, as I told you in the other thread already: Do you honestly believe that somebody would watch one of your proposed challege matches for 3 hours on a small cell phone screen? Sheesh ... there are some things where cell phones just don't cut it. Even my granny in the early 60's had a TV screen better suited for that, only difference was it was in B/W.

And yes: if my only option were to watch a 3 hour tournament on anything less than a 15" laptop screen, I would not be interested at all. But even a 15" screen is not really such a great treat in an age where 32" tv screens are considered to be small.
