A Cue for This and a Cue for That...

I recently moved to Mississippi from another state. At the poolroom at home where I played there is a guy who has several cues. Now, I understand some people collect cues, trade cues, buy/sell/trade cues as a side business (or primary), but this guy PLAYS with every cue he has! He has a cue for 9 ball on a big table. He has a cue for 9 ball on a bar table. He has a cue for 1 pocket. He has multiple shafts for each cue, each with a different tip for playing with different cue balls! He even has a cue which he only uses for long cut shots where he needs to "juice it up" with inside english!

Now, I have a break/jump cue which I rarely use because I rarely play anything but 1 pocket. I have my playing cue with an OB classic shaft and Kamui black hard tip. That's what I use when I play 1 pocket, 9 ball on a big table, 9ball on a bar table, or any other game I might play once in a blue moon! It seems to work just fine for me. What do you think about having all those cues for different purposes? I put it in the "obsession/overkill" category.

That's why I haven't encouraged my wife to play pool: this cue goes with this outfit, another cue goes with another outfit...and so on, until an entire closet is given over to her cues. :D

I don't buy the "cue for 9-ft and a cue for 7 ft." argument. There are times you need to make a super-soft shot on a 9 ft. table and other times that you need to powershot on a 7-footer. Just get one cue and learn how to use it.

That's exactly what I said to him! I also told him I believed that is why his game won't pick up, because he is always using a different cue. He has no consistency. Of course, in his mind he is the walking wikipedia of pool so for me to say that to him was preposterous! After all, I'm such an idiot my shaft is worth more than my cue, Lol!

I've seen players do this.

But I've never seen a good player do this.

I think he is a little OCD like me, but he is much worse!!

I have two playing cues and a J/B cue. Both players are set up the same except for the weights. The heavier is used on large slow tables only and the lighter cue is used for fast tables, BB and one pocket.

Works great for me.

Similar dilemma for me regarding speed of the table!

I found that switching from a soft tip to a hard tip identical shaft gave me GREAT results. Pretty DRASTIC changing from pool hall equipment vs. Tournament equipment i.e. new balls and cloth!!!

I do use a different cue for One Pocket sometimes if the table is really slow, bad rails, dirty cloth, has more to do with the shaft, a little more whip to get the cue ball around.

Same principle soft tips grip the cue ball more and imply More spin. hard tips have less grip. IMO I get better results!

He's probably just someone who likes cues, has a bunch, and needs an excuse to use them all so that is how he justifies it to himself. Maybe not the smartest approach but then again we'd all like to think we could pick up a cue off the wall and play to whatever level we play at normally and this is really just another version of that.

I did this the other day, had some time to kill so stopped at the pool hall and just grabbed a house cue. Yeah, it felt a little weird at first, but the tip was good and I was playing as good as I ever play with it except for a couple shots. Those few shots were mostly finesse shots where the shaft just wasn't moving as smoothly through my fingers as my own cue would have (it was humid and shaft could have used a little work to clean it up) and caused my speed to be off by a fair bit.

I think we need more people like this guy. He clearly enjoys the game and doesn't mind spending money on equipment. There are many reasons he may not play up to your standard. His multiple cues may not be the main reason. Leave the guy alone. He may be having fun with his cues and we could all use more fun in our lives, so people say. I tend to believe them.

It's like golf clubs. A cue to draw the rock. One for long cuts. One for inside English and another for outside. There will be more cues and fewer players so this could be the answer.

I have no problem with him having all those cues. The only problem I have is when he tries to tell me I need different cues for all the same reasons he has them. He considers himself somewhat of a guru who comes across more as a know-it-all. I could fill pages with stories illustrating this point, but my purpose with this post was not to trash and bash the guy, but to see others' opinions on multiple cues as well as sharing my own opinion.

Side note: He actually plays a little better than I do (which really isn't saying much) due to hours and hours of practice nearly every day. I might play 3 days a week...

There used to be a guy in Nashville at JOB Billiards who carried 3-4 cues and would use a different for a different kind of shot. I never saw him do too well so it apparently didn't work that great.

I agree with Kid Dynomite as going from a league dirty cloth, non responsive bumpers, dirty set of cheaper balls come into effect. I may not be glued as much into these as I do switch cues basically from summer to winter though. Our summers can be extremely humid and many bars around here just open the windows and the cloths are damp as well. The winter brings very dry air and the difference between the cloth from summer to winter is extreme. This coupled with tournament conditions of speed and tood rails with polished balls makes it so much easier to have a softer hitting cue and not to change your normal stroke which is just a longer explanation of what " Kid Dynomite " has stated above.

I used to play with a guy like that. He could never play with any consistency, because he spent so much time changing cues and shafts.
He was a real sweet old fart though :)
Personally I have 2 playing cues, 5 shafts of 4 different kinds, a break cue and a jump cue.
My player is a Exceed wrapless cue with Mezz WX900 shaft. But i also have a slightly heavier wrapless Mezz with a Mezz Hybrid Alpha shaft i use only for straight pool.
The other shafts is Mezz WX700 and Hybrid Pro II, they just stay in the bag as "just in case" shafts or if someone wants to try any of the shafts Mezz makes.
I have just ordered a JB rugged 4x8 so I can fit all the shafts :)

Great thread. You just cured me from wanting another cue! I have 3 and that's plenty.
