The Old Man and His Cue

I wonder if he really didn't purchase the cues from someone else....at the previous place, where he mentioned he didn't enjoy it anymore and was searching for a new place to play, ran into you, etc...

The popping tips off house cues sounds a bit strange....maybe he was strumming up business for his new cue repair shop. :grin:

Man you guy's sure are quick to tar and feather a guy around here, I hope I never have to be judged by any of you!

Unless you saw him take the cue in question from the place, he's not guilty but a likely suspect.

And like some have said, he really could be mentaly sick and needs help, instead of a good Ass Kicking to the curb, he needs to be talked to, and find out what state of mind he really is in,

now don't get me wrong, he maybe guilty as Hell, but don't jump to judgement so quickly, "Kickin Chicken" should know more about his mental state than the rest of us,

but like sjharr ( Steve H ) said about the tips being popped off, the old guy maybe strumming up buisness for the cue repair shop!

Just a couple of clarifications:

The "old scuffer" was initially suspected of stealing the cues because someone said they thought they saw him taking a case that didn't belong to him out of the original pool hall the night Roys stuff went missing. I do not believe he was confronted about it because there wasn't solid enough evidence.

As for the tip removing, I don't think it has anything to do with drumming up business since the club I frequent has a good-guy friend of mine doing all of the cue maintenance and "scuffer" doesn't know him. My sense is that he steals them for his own use or maybe he supplies some to others. Alternatively, perhaps he does have some issues with mental health though in talking with him he seems to be all there.

Some of his stories from the past were independently verified by a couple of guys who know a little about him. BTW, he been a non-certified pool instructor for more than 30 years.

Because there may be a health issue impacting on his behavior plus out of consideration for his son, who plays at a fairly high level, I won't name him or post his picture calling him a thief. There was another story about him, however, that I didn't share where he allegedly took a cue from someone with the promise to pay by a certain date and he jerked that guy around for over a year, until finally, the seller moved to Florida and ended up stiffed.

So, in my opinion, mental health problems are running a distant second to being a bad guy. I know that now, when he's around, and there's no friend of mine available to watch my gear, I won't take a bathroom break without putting my stuff behind the bar. And that's no way to enjoy your home room.

Have you or someone from the room considered talking with his son? The two may not be as close as you assume. He may know of his Dad's problem but chooses out of respect not to do or say anything. Just an idea. Not necessarily a good one though. Guess I just give people too much rope. Eventually he may "hang" himself anyway.

This is truly sad, to be honest I don't know what I would do as I have never come across this sort of situation. I would hope I have lived long enough and learnt enough not to do anything stupid. Everyone should be innocent until proven guilty, but you get to a point where if things happen time and time again and you are there every time, it makes it impossible for people to believe you are innocent.

I remember talking to all the older guys when I first starting playing snooker in the UK. These guys had a wealth of knowledge to pass on and so many stories of the old days it was awesome listening to them. To those guys, most of whom are unfortunately dead now, I will be eternally grateful. Stories not just about snooker but life stories too. I will name a few below just out of respect, I would hope I have lived up to some of their expectations. If I am half the person these guys were, I see myself as being OK. May those who have passed Rest In Peace, more than being good players you were awesome Human Beings!

Taking tips off house cues and keeping them with him is a fairly strange thing to do. I would definitely wonder if he was in his right mind or if something troubling happened to him recently like maybe losing a loved one. As disturbing as this is to read it's very possible that this is his reaction to something traumatic happening to him. It's not uncommon for behavior like this to show up as well as to get worse in someone basically crying out for help and of course it would show up in the places and situations he's most familiar with.

Of course, it could even be sadder as I could be wrong and he could just be some of the scum that we all know still exists around pool. I'd rather think at his age that he'd have learned to not s#!t on the pool community he plays with. Pool players are a tight knit bunch and even more connected these days. Not good to screw around as you never know who else is going to hear about it or where it would be broadcast.

Hope that guy figures things out before he has no where to turn. I also agree that he definitely needs to be kept an eye on initially to see if he changes his behavior but if this is just his character then the booting out the door might be the only option.

On a better note, I'm very happy to hear that your friends got their cues back. You don't hear that one very often but then again who steals a cue and then has the balls to play with it locally. That part is suspicious to me. Anyway that's my take on this.

I used to pick up old tips that players would discard after having a new tip put on their cue. I liked the older smaller, well rounded tip. And yes, I put them on myself. :wink:
