A joint

When you guys are attaching the handle to the forearm how big is your handle? Is it tapered at all? I usually have my forearm about .060" oversize when I install points but have left my handles straight at about 1.290". I have been thinking of turning the handle down some before hand to lessen the turns after the handle is attached. Is it harder to get the A joint turning true with a tapered handle?

Just looking for some opinions and different techniques.

Thanks

I tapper my handles before I install. I have not found it to be more difucult to make everything run true this way.

I cut my handle stock to 1.5"(round),then I let it rest. Then I taper the small end to 1.250" & let it rest. Then I taper it to 1.150", then after a rest I use my collets to center it, face it off, then join it to the forearm. I let the assembled handle & forearm rest & then take one cut to true the whole thing, assemble the butt sleeve & let it rest. Then I taper the small end to 1.125". After another rest I taper to .900" & do any inlays. One more rest & then a final turning...JER

i taper my cue down in 2 peices. then i dry fit to make sure its running true. if not i reface everything. i dont have much trouble with this method. i make everything fit perfect then cue my wrap groove later. ensures your points will always be perfect. when i glue i put it between centers while still wet. (if it moves which is never) find the high spot, i stop from spinning and use the blunt end of my tool post at push on the middle. i only had to do this once ot twice

credit goes to jerry -r-. without him id probably quit making cues by now

I taper everything down to within .020" of finish size before assembly. It's not difficult for me to keep a centerline. Whether you assemble early or just before finish, you'll still end up taking the same number of cuts. I think it's a choice you'll have to make for yourself, based on what works best for you.

If you are going to taper first then keep in mind that it is hard to chuck up on a taper. You will want to support the back end of the handle or use a steady rest out on the bed of your lathe. I support from the back. While handle is in the chuck I will dry fit the prong and see if it spins at a lower speed on center.
