Very sorry to hear that. Adanac and I were discussing John Bear on that very day! No one had a smoother, prettier stroke. And I will always remember him as a gentleman. May he rest in peace.

My deepest sympathy for his close family, his brother Jimmy.
You will be missed especially among the players and I am very sad we never got that rematch. RIP John Bear.

Such an enormous talent and such a huge loss

This is a very sad day for me. John Bear was a true gentleman to me. I remember when I was brand new in this game, he took 2 minutes out of his life and showed me the proper way to stand and address the cue ball. I still use what he taught me to this day. He was such a wizard on the snooker table and I was just mesmerized watching him. I will never have anything but the greatest respect for him and I will miss him. My condolences to Jim and the rest of his family.

At 16 I thought I knew what I was doing...I was wrong. John Bear offered to "give me lessons" a 40 Points Spot for $10.00/game (Snooker, 1981). He killed me...but I learnt a great deal.

Twenty years later I'm up in small town on business and get into a match for medium cash. John unseen to me... walks up next to me and "informs" me that the next set I will be spotting the kid the 8 and last two. This way he has a one in five chance and you will have to play good to beat him. Slides back to his solitaire game and never looks up at me the rest of the night.

The smoothest stroke you'll ever see and a great "head" for the game. Today I shook his brothers hand and wished him my condolences. John was one of the good ones.

That's great! Were you giving the guy a spot to begin with? I wish I had that gift, to be able to clock people that exactly.

I stopped by the Rack on my way home from work and talked to Jim. He said that his brother died of a heart attack. The funeral services will be Thursday in Campbell River. There will be no service on the Mainland. He was only 62 years old. :(

I watched John play before in these vids. I wonder where OceanView is from. We have an OceanMan reservation in Saskatchewan.

For those interested, John Bear in action. This was the first I had seen of him as he was a little before my time, but I have heard alot of stories.

There are 7 parts to the match.

Thanks to Oceanview of this forum for the upload.

Thanx for showing this, Celtic.
It's nice to see that great hit that John Bear had...
...and Bernie Mikkelsen is no slouch either.

anyone holding clips of john bear playing snooker? would love to see them

I'm looking....John Bear qualified for the Crucible one year...80s....
...he lost to Bill Werbenuik 10-7....
...somebody in Britain probably has it saved.

I may have to rejoin the Snooker Forum....
...can't remember my forum name or password.

yeah, he reached the last 32 losing to Big Bill. Not sure if it was televised though, would love to see more of big bill as well, phenomenal player. John Bear had really smooth strokes, would have been a great snooker player. Was the Canadian Professional Championships in the 80s televised? was just wondering. if it was, than some Canadians would have it recorded. would love to see them.
