A Letter from Mike Dechaine

I thought it best to let a little time pass from when Mark Wilson announced his picks for the players he'll consider to be on this year's Mosconi Cup team.

To say my not making his list stung would be one of the biggest understatements ever.

There has been a lot of speculation as to why I was excluded but I think at this point, those reasons matter much less than the fact that I didn't make it on.

I have always been a player who wears his emotions on his sleeve for all to see. I am a fierce competitor and I feel like I have a real chance to win in every match I play. I know that I can be hard on myself, and others, during the heat of competition. I'm 26 years old.

Everyone has to face disappointments in their lives and I'm no different. I am learning, however, that how we respond to adversity can help define who we are. I'm working on better ways to channel my emotions toward the positive.

My plan going forward will be to stay positive while I keep trying to play the best pool of my life.

A big thank you to all who have supported me and to those who might not have, to them I say please keep an eye on me and maybe I will earn your support, as well. I promise I will try hard. I also want to thank Snookers, RI and OB cues, thank you guys for giving me a chance.

And the other biggest understatement ever:

I love pool!

Sincerely,
Mike Dechaine

Good form. You could haven chosen any number of ways to react to this situation, and it appears that to me that you've made the right one.

I'm fully expecting to see you represent us again in the future, Mike.

Keep on rocking! Great to see a Maine kid doing so well.

You are one of my favorite players! After meeting you and talking to you, it's easy to make you a favorite.

Good luck and shoot 'em in!

I think our best chance to defeat the Euros was to assign you as the designated racker.
However,I think that ship has sailed and now we have to resort to skills and harmony.

But who wants to win that way anyway?

That is a classy professional post. Well done and good luck the rest of the year and congrats on your recent victories.

Looks like your growing up! I would love to start rooting for ya! You are 26 YRS old, you are young, change for the better bud. It all goes by too fast! Humble yourself, you will gain sooo much!

Good luck, your friend, ELI

Mike, i have to admit to being one of those who didn't always root for you previously.

but coming on top of playing some super pool lately, this message put you up about 6 notches in my eyes as a class act who rises above adversity.

congratulations on your vision and perspective on life and pool, and the very best of luck going forward from here.

Mike:

thank you, for posting to us all; it speaks volumes. well done.
rumour has it, that you have the capacity to be "the best player of all time"....

Excellent post, Mike. Your words were poignant.
Although my "vote" for the MC team did not include your name (nor many other qualified names),
I can tell you WILL get there again. It takes a big man to understand that one needs to grow—and don't we all!

On top of that, it's great to see a top-notch player write so well; in my book, that is more important than one's pool skills.

I hope to play you some day, Mike. Keep up the good work in life AND of course, on the pool table!

Your Vote for the MC team, what year are you speaking of, as no one voted this year.
Are you speaking of the threads where people were naming who they wanted on the team even though many of those weren't even on the eight man list of possibles?

This post is the definition of good sportsmanship!! Man you are playing great right now. I think the only people happy you aren't on the Mosconi team are team Europe!! Great win against Mika by the way in the Ginky memorial. You showed a lot of heart at the end and showed everyone you know how to win, and that is BIG!! Good Luck Mike!!

Mike you are on the high road now. Stay up there and be ready to succeed at your game and in life. By the way when I was your age I was.....25!:D

Good post Mike, it sounds like you have decided to work on the things that you can control and not worried about those things you can't. Everyone has bumps in the road. If you can see them for what they are, learn from them, and move on, then your chances for success will be maximized, IMHO. BTW Efren is a good role model for any pool player, IMO, a tough, tough competitor, and a truly humble good sportsman on and off the table. Good Luck.

Sorry Mike, you are a great pool player; i am sure it was not easy decision for Mark! Are you playing in WPA WORLD 9-BALL CHAMPIONSHIP 2014 in Qatar in June?

Although I've not been your biggest fan, I have a ton of respect for your game. You shoot straight, have a super passion for the game and you are subject to beat anyone in the world.

From reading this, I see you are growing as an individual which is the most important thing. Realizing that your outbursts are perceived as weakness is a big step forward. If you continue to mature as a person first, I would think you'd be a prime candidate for the MC as well as a real threat to win a world championship.

I think everyone deserves a second chance and I hope for only the best for you in your personal life as well as your pool career. Your playing skills would surely be an asset to Team USA if your emotions and character are in check. May the future bring you growth and knowledge.

Nice post Mike! I'm starting to become a fan of yours. Thanks for taking the time to post and clearing the air before the rumor mill went on tilt...lol.
