Just wanted to introduce myself, I've been lurking for a bit and I'm starting to feel like a peeping tom :) My name is Mike, I'm 25, I've been playing pool for just short of 2 years, and for about 6 or 7 months seriously. I'm working on getting better and thats one of the reasons I'm here.

Welcome Mike! Are you a league or tournament player? What part of the country are you in? Since you've been lurking a while, you know you can ask just about anything on this forum (and others), and get lots of good information!

Oops

I attempted to edit that post but most not have been successful.. D'oh. I'm involved with the APA and have been playing on an APA team since my first few weeks of playing pool. I'm currently a 3 (was a solid 4, but I stopped practicing and got complacent, I learned my lesson quickly) One of my biggest challenges early on was the mental aspect of the game, I had a nasty habit of playing to the ability of my opponent. I've beaten many 5's and 6's in only 3 or 4 innings (5 and 6 ball runs) and I've lost to some 2's badly. I've gotten a handle on that though and have started to play more consistantly (after winning only 2 games in a 5 match span, I've gone 6-1 in my last 7, even though some of them werent pretty) The thing I need to work on now is getting away from being a "shot maker".. I have alot of confidence in my ability to make cuts, banks, etc., so I dont play position as I should. I guess working with someone who can teach instead of just trying to beat me would do wonders for my game :) BTW, Im located in Northern Virginia.

Hi Mike and welcome to the board!

For playing 8 ball, I highly recommend Jimmy Reed's video "8 ball strategy"...at least I think thats it. He sells them on eBay I believe and they really will help your game alot.

As a former APA league player, I can understand your growing pains. The best form of practice though for you will probably be just breaking and running balls...and learning when to shoot ducks and when to leave them to block the pockets. Position play is just a matter of learning to control whitey to do what you want.

Good luck and feel free to ask any questions you may have...we have a lot of advice some of us are more than too happy to share. ;)

Shorty

Hi Mike like you, I'm new to the board. Unlike you I haven't been lurking for years. A couple of weeks ago someone mentioned it on another board I post on and I decided to check it out.

I've found it to be a valuable source of information.

:)

what poolhall(s) in n. va do you play at?

I've learned most everything from just playing, I've had a few guys (and girls) give me pointers along the way, but mostly it was just banging away until I figured it out. I may pick up that video since I cant find anyone willing to teach me position (most of the regulars at the room I play are in the APA league with me and dont want me getting better, and the guys on my team arent good teachers)

I usually play at Breaktime Billiards in front royal, but will occasionally play at Bungalow Billiards in Chantilly (its close to my office)

Great to have you on board, Mike. The breadth of knowledge and insight on this forum has always amazed me. I hope your forum experience is a positive one.

Last but not least, there's no seniority around here. Your opinion will carry as much weight as anyone else's, and I hope you'll feel comfortable sharing your views with the forum.

Welcome Mike. We were all new here once. If you want to learn about pool, you are in the right place. If you want some lessons, I am in Leesburg. Send me a PM. Just enjoy the game.

I just heard that Champions is coming to Leesburg (ran across a classified ad in the Loudoun Easterner).
Any idea where?

I play at Bungalow Billiards in Chantilly as well every now and then.
Maybe will run into you.

Welcome Mike. Don't worry about the mental game... you're 2 years in... the mental game will come. You said you are a shotmaker. Well, combine that with postion play and take 'em down.

This board is a great resource. There are pro players, very proficient and experienced amatuer players and a nice selection of Instructors here. Any questions you have will probably be answered in a very diverse and varied manner. But "diverse and varied" doesn't mean it's bad... it means you're getting the best info from a very widespread group of cueist, and in every thread on AZB, there is great information. Enjoy your stay, and don't hesitate to ask anything you have a question about... as was once wisely stated, "The only stupid question is the one not asked."

Later,
Bob

It is on RT 7 on the right when comming in from the east. Right where the K-Mart use to be. Next to the Kobe restaurant in the shopping center. They said they were going to open mid Nov. Didn't happen! I go by to check on the progress. Last week, it was still under construction. I will check again tomorrow morning and let you know. I am looking forward to it big time.
