I finally got around to publishing my interview with Grady Mathews on OnePocket.org -- you can learn alot about his background, how he developed as a player, and some of the great places & characters he spent time around -- and was in action with -- over the years.

I know you all have been enjoying his tales of Denny Searcy (may he rest in peace) and others lately, and I thought you would enjoy this article.

Steve,
Here is a short review of the article - WOW!!!!!!!!

P.S. - this is a must-read for students of the game.

That was one special interview, sir. You did a terrific job of asking questions and Grady did a terrific job of answering. Much thanks to you both.

That was great

I didn't know Grady was in Houston in '70. I got there, out of the navy,
in Oct. '70, and used to go down the Le Cue downtown. There always seemed to be good action in there. I saw Jersey Red, Boston Shorty, Eddie Taylor, and others.

I watched Squirrel for an hour once practicing on a big table at Le Cue, and didnt see him miss once. That was right before he ended up going to Vegas and Beat Wimpy for the 9 ball Championship.

I played quite a few people, but used to get matched up all the time with
Alfie Taylor in the Village. He was the 9 ball Champion of Texas, and Eddie
Taylor's little brother.

Scott...Not to disagree with you (because I don't know for sure), but Eddie told me that Alfie was his nephew, not his brother. This was a few years ago, when both of them were in Vegas for the BCA Trade Show.

Awesome interview ,simply amazing!!! These are the kind of Classic stories that need to be recorded for all of time.

I know and heard about the(snooker playing) Canadians that went down to USA to challenge the American players. They figured that after playing on a 6x12 snooker table that 9 x41/2 tables with bucket pockets would be a breeze. They soon found out that comparing snooker to 9 ball was like comparing apples to oranges and word has it they lost a chunk.

Anyways, thanks for posting a link to such a great interview, much appreciated.

Scott ... Yes, I think you are right. It was a long time ago, and Alfie was
only in his mid 20's, and very good. The 'Taylors' name was well
known down in Houston. I know their was a brother named Robert, or Bob of Eddie's.

As always, great work, Steve!! You have been a great resource of publishing the "past life" of one pocket.....

Great interview, big thanks to Steve and Grady for taking the time to do it!
