When it comes to buying cues do most of us by out of

A - necessity -the need to get a new cue because of a lost, stolen, old, or broken cue

B - Desire - Seeing a new cue and loving it so i just have to buy it.

C - Want - the want to simply have more cues

D - Collector - you collect a specific type or all types of cues.

Im just curious as since i have started here i have purchased three cues and while i love them two of them i think i bought simply because i liked em so hence the reason for my question. I would love to be a collector bt havent figured out which brand or maker i really like the most yet.

Good questions!

I think I'd belong to the B category, as every cue I purchased was bought purchased due to desire. I wanted to try Predator so I bought a 5k2, then I wanted to try a Sch?n (one of the best decisions of my life :)) so I bought one. However I never had two cues at the same time.

Right now I am saving money to go custom, yet again because of desire. I would also love to be a collector, but I don't have the funds for it, although I know what cues I would collect.

Note: It would have been a good idea to put out a poll for this question, it would have been easier to see the outcome. However this thread s very new so it' not late to start another one ;)

None of the above (kind of). I buy cues becasue I want to try different cue builders work, especially the newer ones like Cory Barnhart, Blackcreek, etc. Since I'm not a collector so I simply look for more affordable cues to try them out.

I try to get them at reasonable prices, play with them for at least a week, learn about the cue and it's playability and if it doesn't suit my game, I will resell it locally at a reasonable price. This has provided me a a kind of free education in the cue market and helped me learn what I like in a cue. I currently have 4 cues that I can interchange without losing anything in my game. The rest I will sell eventually - they are all great cues but just play differently than I'm used to.

I have found this to be fun and educational.

I'm currently at A but want to move onto B and someday C and eventually D. Make sense???;)

I don't know about the question here. I just sold my cue recently so I need another, but I can get a players for $30 and call it a day but instead I got hooked up with Mike Cochran and decided to have one built. I'm not A-player, so it's not like I need my own custom cue I just want one. So I'm not sure if that puts me in the nessacity or I just want one catagory. perhaps a few more options are required...

Somewhere between B and C. Sometimes I just have a hankering for a new cue. I'm always hesitant to spend a lot of money on any one cue, so I've accumulated a handful of relatively plain ones that hit well. Always looking for that killer hit...

I am by no means a collector as I have rarely owned more than one cue at a time. So I would be an A or a B. If there is a cue I really like, and think it would suit me better than one I have, I would sell/trade what I have to get it. Right now I have a Joss and a Samsara, but both were gotten only bacause they were amazing deals (Joss was a $550 retail I got for $200 due to a pricing mistake) and the Samsara was cheap off ebay and was bought when the Joss had no shaft for it.

I'm like Dave, just want to try new cuemakers and still get them at very reasonable pricing. Only difference, I keep them for myself. :D

Personally, I bought the first just to have my own cue. Then I bought a few nice ones to get more data, based mostly on reputation and looks. Now days I mainly want a nice cue that I know is a killer deal, and even when I happen on one of those, I usually still pass.

I buy cues out of desire...I eat mac-and-cheese out of necessity.

You must keep in mind that most who collect also have "players" to fullfill the "necessity" department.

I have players and collectors. I love them all equally!!

:)

Russ...

A lot of people look for the "magic" cue. My search for cues has been related to the fact of finding the cue that I feel comfortable with the hit. I have narrowed down my favorite cues now but I am always in the lookout for something nicer.

kind of sll of the above except lost or stolen. i buy out of want but if i see a steal i go for it. for 2 years i didnt buy cues bc i wanted to buy equiptment and focus on making. it is real hard. i have to fight myself

I fit in to all of them. A- I have a necessity to keep inventory in my store. B and C - I want and desire beautiful cues. I love the feeling of having a beautiful cue in my hand. I stand a little taller as I approach the table. I might not be the best player but by god I have the nicest cue in the place. And D- I have my collection. Those are cues that are collectable or have centimental value to me. Those will always be mine and never sold. Hope this helps Charlie!

Why do I buy cues?

Because I have to!! Doesn't everyone? I have however slowed down. (Low on cash). I really should sell some, but end up trading and buying more. Anyone want some production cues or crooked vintage display only cues?

I guess I fall into the C+, D category.

Currently 231 cues and counting. Goal - 125 custom cues upgrading each year.

I fit between B and C. Don't need a new cue thats for sure, but there are a few cues that I really want and I'll eventually own them. Also, if I see a cue that catches my eye by being from a good cue maker, or rare, or known to be a great player, or simply a good deal I might try and obtain it just because its a good deal.

I just started getting back into pool a couple of month ago. I told myself I'd buy 1 new or used cue each year. 2 cues in one year max unless I sell one mine. I might try and move into being a collector, but the problem is I usually play with all my cues.
