i have a great break .........they spread so well almost every rack........its a runable rack...............i dont runout as much as i can........as someone should i mean...........my question is i have an upcoming tourney.......should i keep blasting the rack against my opponents or should i break differently since i dont runout that much......

Keep breaking like you do and start learning to run out. Why would you want to hold back your best weapon?

your break should be opponent driven. if you move better than him you are better off having balls tied up. if you get out more open them. if you can see you arent able to get out on a rack then you should be setting up a spot to hook him.
it is a different game than playing with top players who run out when ever they get to the table with a shot.

Keep doing what your doing. I have a great break also but don't run out as much as I would like to. (mostly because I have not played in 5 years) But even if you don't see a out or don't think you will make a shot because your not that great at them just play a safe and try for ball in hand.

A break to die for

What's your secret? I can't run out that well either but how do you break ?

How is your cueball control? Also, are you playing a certain ball to a certain pocket? Or are you smashing the rack with a nice big bang, and whatever happens happens? Why I ask, the top pros who power break still control whitey a huge percentage of the time. Be it a center of the table cueball, or moving the cueball to whatever end of the table the next ball in line will be at. It makes a difference in your runout percentage, and you confidence in running out the balls on the table.
Ill tell you a story about how important the break is. A friend of mine used to play pro. He was a runout machine with a straight pool background. He found out how important the break was against top players when he drew Rempe in a tournament one time. He was getting up and breaking and running 2s and 3s, only giving up the table on dry breaks. Rempe was only giving the table back on dry breaks. Difference was Rempes break was grooved in and he was pocketing a ball on the break with leave more consistently. Rempe was running 3s, 4s and 5s. My buddy lost something like 13-6 and never missed a ball. Never played a bad safe.... nothing. He just didnt break as consistantly as Jimmy Rempe.

I think alot of it depends on the type of game you'll be playing in the tourney. If it's nine ball you don't need a hard break too make a ball. I break the balls pretty hard myself but don't control the cueball as good when I break hard. I've learned the hard way that if I get my ego out of the way and just hit the rack with that lick like Shannon Daulton calls it I have a shot after the break more often and this leads to more runouts because your confidence level will rise when you know your gonna have a shot after the break.

Well my advice is to soften the break , Because I've got a 9-ball tournament Tomorrow and I think I'm going to use a softer break and the cut break , I've been practicing all week and found that the cut break as worked really well .

Keep breaking like you've been breaking. Hit em hard, spread em out.

Then .... If you can't run out, or down the line (2 or 3 balls) there's a really bad layout: Run and Hide. Creative safety play will often win the game. Go for a 3-foul win. It's just a valid as a run out.

IMHO

well...

i break very powerfully , i stand up write and adress the head ball, i come down and im already in followthrough past the cueball, i rock back....now im adrressing the ball, then when i break , my body moves first then my stroke comes, i get all my body into , i break very hard, and lately i havent jumped the table......

there is this goober that i shoot with, he rocks back and forth alot really fast, he looks dumb......and he breaks like a wuss.........he could get more power in his break if he addressed the cueball, and just scooted his feet close to the ball, like 6 inches, then u feel a little off ballance, but when u come throught the ball u are already in position to get your whole body into it...

Depends on how often "almost" is. I'd keep tabs. If you're getting big spreads and not running out it's something worth fixing on the rest of your game.

Usually when i'm crushing and coming up dry,i'll try something else. When i'm playing someone that moves better then I do...I think about going to the kitchen and making them breakfast...There's nothing worse then feeling like john stockton playing 9 ball.
