ABCL, Bonus Ball - History Repeating Itself ?

There are certain events, and certain people of the past, that make billiard history, and the games we play, what they are today. Mosconi, Hoppe, Fats, Johnston City, Derby City...and the list goes on and on....

And the one thing you can say about Bonus Ball, like it or not, is that they are stamping their name at the top of a new page in the history books. Whether that page will turn into a chapter, is yet to be seen.

Likewise with the ABCL. If successful, it will result in the cooperation of rooms across the country, on a scale not seen in many many many decades. This too is a history making proposition.

But here's the biggest question I have: What's going to be different this time around?
I mean, havent we (the industry) been here before?

Read thru this article, and just change the name of the game they are talking about, (to BB or american rotation) and look at how similar this all is...

the main difference is the internet, and that's a powerful tool-when used right. no matter what side your on, its sad people are picking sides.

More importantly, why did the previous fail and do these new ventures have a plan to deal with it?

Bingo.

You'd think, just by reading the article, that they had it all under control, but if that were truly the case, we'd still have that association today. But we don't. Which means that even the best of intentions can go south. What needs to happen to prevent this from happening again and again?
 
Does it really matter if it is similar to something in the past? At least there are several options out there now and coming that haven't been around. Should the people trying to promote these things just sit at home with their thumbs stuck up their azz doing nothing?

On a similar note. During my tenure at the BCA, one of my 3 jobs was to put on the All American Tour, and then cold call all BCA room members (membership was over 400 rooms not long ago) and tell em of the product package I had to offset their $1,000 added by having auctions for cues and supplies received for hosting an event. I had a $46,000 annual budget, but saw most of the money going for full page ads in the Major billiard mags, and of course two of em were on the board, but that's another story. Anywho I found a way to shave that amount in half/Easily. I recommended we give ea room member a guaranteed $1,000 cash AFTER the event was held. We were spending, at the time ALLOT of advertising by doing FULL PAGE All American Tour ads, min $1,000 a pop, and P&B and BD were both on board/conflict of interest come to mind????? We could of saved ALLOT of office time, cost, mailing, calling, remailing and on. With my way....all I required is final results, and proof copy sent to me of their advertising efforts for the event. The front office, at the time could of cared less, the ex director was nearing retirement. A few times that I sent the product package, owners kept the equipment and never held the event as promised, why should he, we had NO control or reason for him to tow the line. Basically $1,000 theft with NO recourse.

You're right, it doesn't matter if its similar to the past, but then again, that's not really the point either. The point is, I hope that the decision makers have been, or are currently, making their plans carefully, with the future in mind. You can't unring a bell.

That said, I certainly hope we see some great new things happening in the pool world. Lord knows we sure could use it.

What I like, is Barry just keeps on pushin' waaaaaaay different approach and commitment than Trudeau.
