Abe Rich Cues?

Couple of Abe Rich cues on ebay. Anyone know if the are legit? Thanks, John

Here are some links to the auctions:

This cue looks like a typical Rich Cue, from the rings in the Butt to the solid wood forearm and joint.

This cue, I don't know it could be but I have never seen that bumper used, or the rings at the joint. It says that it is Titlist Cue conversion, however, from the photo's provided by the seller I can't say that is correct.

Hope this helps

To rich for my blood already. I am saving to have Steve Klapp build a cue for me, and am having a shaft made for the cue I presently have. The initial history factor and a possible low price would make it worth a look, but the bidding went up fast. Thanks, John

that's Abes nephew that's selling them.i sure hope they're real.i have 5 of Abes cues and I'M sure the ones on ebay are real.....rick.

I have a cue made from an old Abe Rich Alves blank. It's one of the best cues I've ever played with.

The Red bottom cue is a Florida Cue. I personally think the other cue with points is a cue Abe had in his shop for resale. He had hundreds of cues made by other people like Adam in his closet when I visited his shop years ago. They all had that little square sticker on them. There is nothing about that cue that says Abe Rich to me. But the other one is a safe bet.

I have been wrong before, so I could be wrong here also.

It seems I should be a little more clear in my answer.
The sale is legit- meaning that Howard Rich, Abe's nephew who inherited the shop, is the seller.
Abe converted house cues into sneaky petes that were very popular at one time. It would make sense that he also converted some other cues with points as well.
I have seen cues from Abe's shop that were similar to the one on EBay. If Howard were to add a picture of the joint and shaft collar, that would show if it had Abe's piloted joint.
That said, Abe used that type of wrap, collars, etc. I've got photos of a cue that had that same butt sleeve design, but it has a big pin and not the small pins Abe most often used.
Again, hard to say 100% that it is something Abe converted, but from photos of other Abe Rich cues, it does seem to be.
I'll attach a few photos to claify.

Best,
~Beau

A few more

There are similarities to cues Abe built or converted, either in craftsmanship or materials.

The "Cocobolo Starlite" was one in Abe's "catalog." That cue has the same joint rings, wrap, buttcap and bumper as the EBay cue in question. I'd be surprised if the EBay cue doesn't have a small pin, too.

Hope the photos help anyone interested make a better-informed decision or become more knowledgeable about Abe Rich and his cues.

To me, they look like Abe Rich cues. But, I've been wrong before, too. It is ultimately your call.

Best,

~Beau

The bottom cue with that little 23 sticker is the type of sticker that was on all of the Asian made cues that Abe had for sale in his shop. It also has the very rounded rubber bumper that thins out on the edge to almost no height, like many Asian cues use, including most of the ones he had for sale when I visited him. Could Abe have changed the wrap on one of those cues. Yes. Or made a shaft for it? Yes. But to call it a conversion seems like a stretch. Abe sold Adam and other Asian cues. I have a few of Abe's cues with the Acrylic windows and a Florida cue. I am no expert on his cues or business, but I am afraid that people will start calling all the Asian cues he had forsale in his shop "Abe Rich cues" and in the long run, it will tarnish the reputation of the true quality of the cues he actually made.

Reserve not met

Looks like the reserve wasn't met on the cue in question.
I spoke to Chris about this cue on the phone.
It is hard to prove one way or another how much of this cue Abe may have customized.
Really all we know for sure is that it came from his shop.
The conversion process itself may have been somewhat limited.
There are similarities in several of the features to other cues from his shop, and some that are undoubtedly Abe's, such as his cocobolo starlight.
As I've always said; make your own decision.

abe bought many kps blanks from palmer for conversions....... thats what this

blank appears to be.

Thanks for the input, John. I appreciate it. I didn't move down here until well after Abe's prime, and my knowledge is limited to what I saw in his shop and the cues I have worked on.

Do you happen to have the photo your son John was kind enough to take of you, me and Manzino at ICCS this year?
If I don't hear from you, I'll assume you haven't read the thread and will try to reach you directly.

Best,
Beau

Abe Rich brazilian rosewood forearm (afaiwt)

Hi fellows,

just thought that pic might make a nice addition to the thread. I got the cue from Abe's nephew Howard lately (easy transaction).
Best.

Abe Rich

Did Abe ever sign any/many of his cues or is this something that is not real common? Thanks
