ABP- the difference between pros that play for a living

Cleary and others, obviously you've never played pool for a living.
Another big difference between your job and the professional players, is that we have to spend $1000-3000 out of our own pocket to get to a tournament before we hit a ball, and then IF we perform well we make money. And at times all we get back is our expense money, and less than that. If we perform badly, no money and we are out of pocket.

In the US Open 9ball case, we are not even sure when we would get paid even after spending $ to get there.
Not too many people I know pay to goto work and may or may not get paid.

That's the kind of pressure most don't face. And that's why no one on the forums or pool industry will ever be able to relate to that unless you have been there.

Shawn, Johnny, Charlie... whoever this is, I'm sorry but its a two way street. You're not doing manual labor, under the table. Its not 'dig the ditch, get your cash'. This is how things work in the professional world. The fact that he even has cash to pay ANYONE is simply amazing. CASH! Only in pool man... only in pool. That's funny!

I'm a professional in my industry and I work for very large clients. Nearly always I work for clients who are working for a client who are working for a client. The money exchange is never quick. Sometimes up to a year. It's my responsibly to manage my money. The larger the amount, usually the longer it takes. Do they have the money, of course, but I'm not the only bill they got.

How does this translate? Well, I think players need to manage their money better. I do understand you want to get paid, and you should. But if you have to wait a month or even 3 months to get paid $10k, $20k or even $50k... I think you should be more thankful that you had the opportunity to win that amount than worry about how quickly you can get it. A tournament like the US Open doesn't happen weekly.

Take a look at the lotto. Say you win $20million. YEAAAA... let me hold a hundo! But for real, say you win. You got a choice to make. Do you want a lump sum NOW or do you want it broken up? A pool player wants its ALL NOW!!!!! Well, all now means a lot less. Its the sucker move.

So would you rather win $15k and have to wait 3 months to get it or win nothing at all? This boycott is exactly that.

Are you going to continue to make a new thread everytime you reply in another thread?

Also Please show everyone the same respect you all requested by signing your name with each post.

Posting the same response in 2 threads and then starting a new thread saying the same thing is not going to win you any friends on here.

Please stick to one thread, answer the questions posed to you and tell us which player is answering the questions. Thank you.

Yes we might if the point needs to be made again to get through to the amazingly low standards some of you fans have for us.

And no, some of us dont feel obligated to tell you who we are. Whats the point? To bash and harass us and our family, friends, sponsors, etc?

Its enough for all of you to know this is coming from the top pro players in the sport. The players who's side you should be on.

I dont think any of us on tour consider you a friend, as well as many others that we are now eyes opened to how you really feel. Thats one of the things we are happy about, to see whos truly for the players.

You are handling yourself with such class.

Good grief. Up until now, I've been on the players side and defended the players side of this debacle. No wonder you won't tell us who this is with comments like you're making.

I'll give Putnam credit for one thing, at least he manned up to who he was no matter how ignorant he came across as.

I'm done following this crap. Round about non-answers from someone that won't tell you who they are but want you to respect them and have high standards for & support them. Really? Good luck with that.

So why bother with these forums where we don't understand ?

You are on our side but you call one of our best players and hardest advocates ignorant.
Strange.
Well thank you for your support and thank you for not following this anymore. We prefer fans who truly understand where we are coming from and that all we want is common sense security.

Isn't the fan base small enough? You coming on here with your elitist attitude will most certainly get more support from "real fans".

Whoever that is lost a fan here and now ... not that I'll ever know as the poster is too chicken to sign his real name.

Fortunately there are fans on here who we do love and respect in return. Thank you for your support, and coming to our aid, defense, and love.

And thank you to Tony Robles who has just called to have his name added to our list of not attending the US Open 9-Ball. We know more of our brothers will follow.

I don't see any "elistist" attitude from the players.

If I played in and placed in the money, I would expect to be paid before leaving the area. That is the way most tournaments and pro sporting events go. How many golf pros and tennis pros don't receive the money that they are due?

If I am a professional business owner, and I plan to put on a tournament, the prize fund is the number one thing to be paid first. The vendors, hotels, and other businesses that provide services for the event are just that...businesses. They are set up to receive their money on a delayed basis.

The players who go to the trouble and expense to attend and participate in the event only HOPE to recover/win some money. It doesn't seem that it would be so tough to pay them when the tourney is over.

Heck, banks are another business. The tourny promoters might even be able to set up a short-term loan of the cash-out amount so that the winners could be paid on time, and their money could be repaid over a longer period, say 90-180 days, whatever the time lag for normal receipt and accountability of monies is.

Grab a lunch. I typed really long again.

I'm just going on my previous dealings with collective bargaining here, so it may be a long essay of 'Nothing to do with the situation', but it is just my personal opinion based on experience here:

As a fledgling organization, it would benefit you all to have the support of the pool community and public. It would be wise on the ABP's part to accept peoples opinions with a little class and dignity and dont have the "If you dont like us, fine." attitude. You will find that even those who don't agree with your point of view may and will still be sympathetic towards your cause.
What you guys are doing is right, in a sense, but you may be going about it in the wrong way.

You cant go the ways of the past organizations and just empty-threat everybody to death, and when the time comes for an event, show up with the 'They called our bluff and we lost' excuses.

Since you all had past experiences with Barry, you should have sat down with him, gone over your concerns, explain to him all the best reasons why he should WANT you to play. Explain to him all the things that could go WRONG if top pros didnt show up. Let him give you his side and reasoning.
It would go over well for you to do this being that you aren't asking for MORE money, just what is owed to you at in a reasonable time frame.
Once you have all that settled, now you have some direction you can use in the case that you would have to pull off a boycott. Throwing out a 'blind' boycott in an attempt to try to corner Barry into doing something is going to backfire because all that does is gives him the power to keep you guys dangling at the end of the rope. He can just say "Fine, dont show.", then you guys would be out any money, guaranteed or not. Of course, you'd save your expense $$. If he plays that card and you show up, then that proves to the pool world that the ABP is just another Say Something, Do Nothing attempt at a players union.

This boycott should have taken months and months to iron out. I suspect that it didnt take very long. I understand the idea may have been around a while though.

I do wish the best of luck to you guys and I hope you get what you deserve as far as timely pay goes and hopefully when all is said and done, this gets the wheels turning in the right direction for the sport.

Then start your own forum, I wasn't aware that AZ had turned into ABPbilliards' own personal playground.

Joe, I don't believe they are being elitist. I do, however, look down on any person who says something anonymously. If you are not willing to put your name to your words, how can anyone take you seriously?

The fact that they specifically said they would not state their name shows me what kind of person they are. It's too bad they aren't man enough to say because we will never know.

quick to name Tony Robles...now tell us your name...if you are standing up for ABP................like another poster said; YOU ARE REALLY SHOWING YOUR CLASS NOW !!!! DON'T HIDE BEHIND THE LOGO...

Yes, that is a good point. It is hard to give support to someone when you don't know who that someone is.

Perhaps I should have said that my support and understanding goes out to the pro players who are boycotting the event....as long as that is what they are doing, not if someone else is using their names without their approval.

The way that I see it is simple. If the payment schedule is going to be something other than the fact that the players will be paid as soon as the event is over, then that schedule should be stated clearly BEFORE anyone is allowed to sign up and pay their fees. That way, they clearly know when they will be paid, and can enter or not, based on the stated terms and their personal financial situation.

I don't believe very many, if any, of our pro players are getting rich off tournament winnings.

Not trying to be funny, or cute, but this looks as though it has been a public relations disaster.

Retaining a quality PR firm may be a smart move going forward.

I agree...both sides are losing in this. I hope something good comes out of it in the end.

I will be curious to see the list of names of the players who play in the Open this year. If nothing else, it will truly be "Wide-Open" this year.
