Seems like yesterday that an obscure Finn walked into Amsterdam Billiard Club, but it wasn't. I believe it was 1997.
Handsome, skilled, and speaking perfect English, he was well accepted by me and the core of regulars in the club.
Though everyone around him knew he played well, I think it was a while before people came to appreciate just how well Mika Immonen played. I remember staking Mika against the great John Ervolino in a 14.1 match in 1999. Mika won about 150-120 in a hard fought match.
Johnny, who was not always gracious in defeat, was nonetheless one of America's greatest authorities on pool. On this occasion his comment to me, within earshot of Mika who heard the remark, was "that kid doesn't even know how great he plays." Two years later Mika was world champion.
I last caught up with Mika at Darren Appleton's wedding about three weeks ago, and wouldn't you know it, Mika made reference to Ervolino's remark made in 1999.
Ervolino, of course, was right and Mika had a big future in front of him. I'm not sure why but I always think of that story when I think about Mika. He did, indeed, have more ability than even he realized.
Mika's induction to the BCA HOF is a special occasion. I couldn't be happier for him.
