Absinthe and pool -- anyone?

I'm a newcomer to the green fairie, but I've been banging balls for a half-century or better. Tonight is my first experience combining the two.

This is delicate, I realize, but does anyone else on this board experiment with absinthe? In the name of science, of course.

Never tried Absinthe, so I don't know about any "green fairy"-- but I am quite fond of the "Green Goddess" ;)

I thought that no one really knows what the formula for absynthe is now???

Never tried absinthe and I don't drink while I am playing or practicing.
 
I have a couple of botles at home that I brought from Portugal and one is sealed and I will trade it for a SW for sure ;)
The other one is poured only in very, very special occasions.

yes it is now available in the united states the lease/law expired approximatly a year ago. Kubler & Pernod are two hotter ones about 53% alcohol. the one I enjoy is LeTourment Vert, it is more mellow and enjoyable to drink.

But is it absinthe with wormwood which is the hallucinogenic additive of absinthe.
 
There is nothing really sinister about Absinthe. By the time you louche it the alchohol content is actually relatively low compared to most spirits. The amount of wormwood used in traditional Absinthe is also low enough that you are not going to get any dramatic effects from it. That is as long as it is not that useless Czech crap that is pawned off as "absinthe" but has absolutely nothing to do with the stuff that was drank in France in the late 19th century.

The actual recipes for how to make Absinthe were never lost, they simply got shelved when the drink became taboo, keep in mind this was in a time prior to the USA prohibition and "Reefer Madness!!!", there were alot of witch hunts for stuff like this back in the day.

They not only dusted off old recpies but have done chemical analysis on bottles of the drink that exist from that era and many labels are now recreating pretty much the exact legitimate Absinthe of old.

the last time i did that i was in japan. it was good stuff but to get more than 2 shots an hour you had to order some for friend and then not give it to 'em!

i didn't think they sold that here in the states?
 
They have Absinth here in PA at the State Store<<< for those not living in silly puritan state like PA......the state store is where we have to go to get the hard stuff.

The guy was saying you put it in a glass then put a sugar cube in a slotted spoon, then drizzle water over the cube into the glass?

My apprentice is a bartender and has tried it here, and over in Europe.....He said it's ok....:cool:

I never tried it.
 
Far as i know, you can't get the real wormwood stuff in the states.

Unless the law has changed, all you're gonna get at the liquor store or the state store is some glorified green colored alcohol that makes you drunk but doesn't trip your brains out.

Hence, it's not real absinthe.
 
Herbsaint has replaced absinthe here in New Orleans at THE OLD ABSINTHE HOUSE which is over 200 years old.

The Absinthe House Frappe
Our signature drink - created here in the 1860's by Cayetano Ferrer

Fill a rocks glass with crushed ice add:
1 1/4 ounce of Herbsaint
1/4 ounce of Anisette
top with a splash of soda water

You could probably muster a hallucination or two by just walking down Bourbon Street or practically anywhere in the French Quarter within a few minutes sans absinthe.

good post.....
i hear absinthe is making a comeback. (but its still hard to find) they had a show on history channel that i seen once as well.......basically the negativity surrounding it stems from the days when it was one of the most popular drinks and people were just over using it....its effects arent any different than say a good scotch...but people thought it was Demonic or something because of the color and the way People would prep it with the sugar cube and water.

ive never had it...but it cant be any worse for people than say drinking half a dozen jager bombs ontop of beer.

Scotch is my drink...
Cheap bottle i like a blend called "White Horse" or "Famouse Grouse"
mid price bottle i like "Dewars 12 year(black)", "johnnie walker black", Glen fiddich
expensive i like Laphroaig Quarter Cask or Cask Strength and ardbeg or a irish whiskey called "Red Breast"
if you like Blends but never spring for single malt...you need to try Laphroaig once in your life...there is no other drink like it in the world.
such a clean buzz too.

I been researching absinthe and I've come across the page where you can find out about the history, the ingredients and a kit to make it. I'm going to give it a try.
 
There's a place in Dallas called "The Absinthe Bar". It has like 10 or so different kinds of absinthe. Personally, I don't like it. I never liked the taste of licorice...
