Accu-Stats Videos Commentary

Over the years I've built a very large collection of videos from Accu-Stats. I've always loved the commentary of the guys in the booth. I've gained a ton of inside knowledge just by watching matches. The guys that I have enjoyed the most over the years was the combo of Grady Matthews and Billy Incardona. It's not just the tips they would share the digs they take at each other are just hilarious. I watch the matches on ESPN and ESPN Classic and they just don't seem to offer the same chemistry that these guys pulled off. Which commentators do you feel give you the most bang for your buck when you purchase these videos?

This is actually a topic I feel quite strongly about. I have a pretty big collection too, about 60 or so. Grady and Danny are my favorite combo. Nick Varney does commentary with Grady on the 99 US Open Final and its really good, probably one of my favorite ones. Good stories by Grady and some good technical stuff from Varner. I guess with Incardonia, you either like him or you dont. Im not really a big fan of his. But listening to him and Grady take those little digs at each other are priceless. Jim Wych (sp) has sort of grown on me. You can tell he really loves the game and wants you to enjoy it.

The ESPN scene will sometimes get a cool guest announcer. Mike Sigel or something like that, and he is entertaining at the very least. Mitch Lawrence can just go away though.

I like Grady, and I enjoy watching Earl, "his affinity for pontificating notwithstanding."

I like the combination on Danny DiLiberto and Billy Incardona/ Grady Matthews. I think that it's more to do with the fact that both commentators are pool players and have so much knowlege/ experience in the game. The vast majority of the matches shown on ESPN and its sub-networks only have one player commentating and then someone else who either does not play pool or has little pool knowlege/ experience.

Grady-Billy
Freddy the beard-anyone
Danny-Jay Helfert/Billy
Buddy Hall and W.W. Woody were outstanding on the Grady and Billy one pocket match from years ago

Tony Annigoni is definitely the worst by far of anyone who has ever commentated on an Accu-Stats video

I agree. Buddy is right up there with the best of them. I laugh when he says things like, " that's the worst shot I ever saw... I wouldn't give you a nickel for that shot".

Hello,

The quality of Accu-stats commentary spoiled me for anything less.

Billy Incardona paired with almost anyone else is my favorite. He's even better when the person he's with isn't a pro because you get all the tips.

Jim Wych is my least favorite he seems to have a knack to chime in when the other commentator is trying to say something.

The main reason I buy the matches is because of the commentary. There's lots of good pool to watch; its the commentary that sells.

The person I would have loved hearing was a Earl Strickland player review but as far as I know he never did commentary.

the best dig by B.I.

Speaking of the Grady/Billy combo and their "digs" at each other: My all-time favorite, and I've referred to it before, was when Billy told the story of the time Grady beat Buddy Hall in a tournament match 11-0 and later proclaimed to Billy that he was the greatest 9-ball player in the world, and thereafter proceeded to lose his next (2?) matches.......and Grady protesting all the while because he didn't want B.I. "to tell everybody that".....and Billy laughing while he was telling the story....it was hilarious and priceless........

All of them are good, but I believe you can learn a bit more from Billy if you listen closely...he keeps it simple. So does Buddy. Johnnyt

Buddy I think is the best. He was also more entertaining I think. When Archer was in the booth or did the player review tapes, he gave the best insight. Grady was, imho, heads above Incardona. While I like Incardona a lot, I think he was the least entertaining of the lot.

OTH, I can not stand Jimmy Wytch.

Have any of you guys heard the commantary McCready V. Nolan match by Grady? Legend .... wait for it..... ary.

Cardone is my favorite commentator on Accustat 1p matches - but I heard Shannon commentate in some other venues and his one pocket analysis was terrific.

I love the way Grady and Billy rip into each other. There's this one great one pocket video, i can't remember the tournament, probably one of the legends of one pocket from '91 or '92. And Grady's commentating on one of Billy's matches and Billy keeps ducking on every shot and playing very safe and Grady and I think it was Buddy Hall are saying he has to shoot at his pocket sometime. Anyway, Billy finally comes to the table with a very makeable shot and Billy says "Now he has to shoot this shot!" and Billy ducks again and Grady says "that is cowardice of the highest order!" it was priceless, I was rolling on the floor laughing.

I rambled.....

Grady Mathews and Billy Incardona are my two of my favorite commentator pairings. As Bobby stated in an earlier post, they have that love / hate relationship going and both seldom ever miss a chance to zing the other. Very entertaining and often very funny as well. Add in the fact that both are pool genius's with very great deliveries and you have a potent pairing.
Nick Varner can be put in with either of those two and you still have commentary as good as it can get. World Championships in 5 different pool disciplines. Can't get better than that. And don't let Nick's easy going manner fool you. He has all the heart and killer instinct in the world. Purdue educated Varner is world class in the booth as well as on the table. These three really are world class and very elite in my opinion. Again, any combo of these 3 are my very favorites.

Jerry Forsyth has the voice and the knowledge to make any match he does all that better, as does Buddy Hall. As a matter of fact, when I was laid up for the first 5 weeks after surgery, I listened to the 2005 World 9 Ball Championships, which was 14 discs long. Jerry did much of the commentating through out thoses matches and what a pleasure it was to listen to his insightful comments.

I for sure miss Bill "Weanie Beanie" Staton and Johnnny "The Velvet Foghorn" Ervolino's commenatry. Two polar opposites birds of a feather....Staton the consumate southern gentleman with a soothing voice, Ervolino the NYCity "bowery boy" with a voice that can't be described, both with a killer hustler's heart.

Ed Sheahan did some very nice work, especially when paired with Grady.
They interact as two old cronies who are having a great time.

Danny DiLiberto knows the game inside and out and has a street smarts that comes acrosss in many of the matches he does.

"Mister Banker" mentioned that he thinks Tony Annigoni is the worst. I happen to agree with him...he's my least favorite. Don Polo once did a match with Grady and sounded like he had a serious case of stage fright.
But Tony adds very little, if anything, to what's going on in the game. He seems to only serve set up or soft ball questions to however he's paired with in the booth. I have hundreds of Accu-Stats and can say that there are several good matches I'd like to buy but won't because Annigoni is one of the commentators.

Jim Wych has definitely grown on me. He knows the game and I'm used to him know. I think when he replaced Grady, that was like trying to follow Muhammad Ali....no way can he compare. But he's gotten better over the years.

Jay Helfert is a top shelf commentator. His voice is that of a friend telling you what's happening and what's going to happen. His stories add color to the matches he does. Jay has seen it all in pooldom, and has done almost as much!

Dallas West and Howard Vickery, I could listen to all the time. They both have that easy going, down home style of delivery that just makes you happy that you're a pool player. Dallas was an exceptional talent and I never figured out why he didn't do more matches.

Mark Wilson is an extremely intelligent man with a great passion for our great sport. My only thing with him is that in every match he's ever done and in every column he's every written, the words "stroke delivery" are used ad nausum. He's seemingly fixated on that one aspect, which albeit is an important one, but he's the only one who seems to always beat the same drum. His way with words is very impressive and he knows the game well. But he seems to have tunnel vision at times with pet tangents.

Jim Rempe and Kim Davenport are two consumate professionals in the booth. Both know the game as well as anybody and both are very firm in their beliefs in how the game should be played. Especially Rempe.

I miss the "older" version of Accu-Stats where Grady or Billy were paired often with Nick or Buddy or Danny D. Two pro players in the booth beats one pro and one professional commentator. And some of the people doing the matches nowadays, especially the "Turning Stone" series, I've never heard of.

I wish that Accu-Stats and Grady could re-unite. I would also like to see our very own Joey Aguzin be given regular duties with Accu-Stats, as he has talent, confidence and knowledge of the game and players to add luster to any match he does.

Bottom line for me is Grady and Billy are my very favorite. Put Nick right there as well. And I don't have enough words of praise and thankfulness for Pat Fleming and his staff for bringing us all these treasures that we now have in our personal collections. I have watched mine over and over and over and have learned much with each viewing. In fact, a few years ago, I started keeping a notebook on the things the pros said in the booth. I even started writing down all the funny things said and stories told that I liked to have them for quick reference.

We lovers of pooldom really have it good since Accu-Stats came into being.

By the way, I would rather listen to Tony Annigoni any day rather than listen to Mitch Laurence shill over and over for the site and venue they're at, the sponsors, the site and venue they're at, the sponsors, etc, etc, etc. A soft spoken Billy Mays. Yuck.

Which, finally leads me to Allen Hopkins, Mitch's partner in many of the ESPN matches. I really enjoy Allen's commentary. His NJ style of speaking (champeen), (shnookered) are down home speak and his knowledge and insightful comments make him in the same class as the Rempe's and Davenport's. And Allen has all the time in the world to speak with you when you approach him. I always wanted to hear him at Accu-Stats paired with Nick Varner or Buddy Hall. That generation of players really had loads of all around talent.

#1. Grady, Billy and Nick
#2. Jerry Forsyth, Buddy Hall, Jay Helfert, Dallas West & Howard Vickery
#3. Jim Rempe, Allen Hopkins, Kim Davenport & Danny DiLiberto.

The best pro pool I've ever had the pleasure of watching on tv was back in the mid 90's. They had the Pro Camel Tour on late nights on our local FSN. There was nothing cut out. You would see the match from start to finish. Davenport, Varner, Buddy and the list goes on would commentate with Ed Kelly. Ed didn't know much about the game but he was really funny and made the game interesting. I wish they would still show entire matches like they did back then. I miss that old tan cloth they used on the tour. They didn't need TV balls. You could see the colors very clear with the tan backround.

I have a huge Accu-stats collection and Grady and Billy are two of my favorites for sure, but I also like Buddy Hall and Danny DiLiberto. Buddy works well with any of the players listed here and his comments and humor are great. I've learned more tips about playing pool and strategy from Danny than any of the commentators I've listened to and he gives some of the best tips on why and how you should do something during the match.

One of my all time favorite matches is Mike Sigel vs Nick Varner at the US Open with Grady and Buddy Hall doing the commentary. I never get tired of watching that match and listening to Grady and Buddy. Nick Varner came back from being down 9-2 and corner hooked to win the match after missing the 9 ball straight in the side pocket on the hill. The corner ball went in 21 times in a row on the break and it's one of the best matches you'll ever see.

I.m going to be doing some more things for Accu-stats. Pat has some old, great matches with no commentary and we're going to do those and I might just do commentary at the DCC next year.
Also, shortly I will be offering my own show at a very reasonable price.

That is great news.

Any chance that some of it might be straight pool?

My favorite matches are when Billy and Grady are in the booth together. They seem to be able to keep the viewer interested, even in the boring parts of a match.

Billy and Grady are the best. Try the Toby Sweet/Steve Mizerak match. Grady is at the top of his game.

Johnny Ervolino was always a joy to hear...never missed a call. Weenie Beenie Bill Staton is also a great pleasure to listen to. I miss both

Buddy Hall has called a few doozies too. I have come to enjoy his commentary style very much.

Varner and Diliberto are a little less entertaining to me, but they are the most insightful. I get a lot out of their words.

In 3 cushion, I like Robert Arana.
