Accustat commentators

I think certain commentators talk too much. They try really hard to let everyone know how much knowledge of the game they have and they talk 1000 mph trying to describe every shot available before the shooter shoots. Then they criticize him for the shot he chooses. I think sometimes they just need to shut up.

I tend to agree, although I might not have worded it so bluntly! :D

All they have to do is sit there and give occaisonal comments.

"He has several options here. Let's see what he chooses." "Not a bad shot. He could have also done...." And that's it.

If I bought an Accu-stats one pocket tape and the commentary was as bland as this, I would feel gipped. I prefer commentators like Billy and Grady who tend to have different insights at times and offer options. Then they explain why a shot may be or have been the best shot. Thats how I have learned alot about the game of one pocket...thanks to those guys. JMO.

I don't know if I agree with you.

Take for example the DCC 14.1 videos. A lot of the players were not real familiar with 14.1, especially older style 14.1 where you don't gamble. I think the videos with the commentary were better than if there had been better players playing good patterns. It gave the commentator the opportunity to educate us on the proper way to play. I think the commentary made those videos priceless.

JMO.

I could be completely wrong and it could be that the majority of the viewers already know.

I agree Southpaw. I find the commentary very interesting. I can understand though how sometimes you may just want to watch the match without it. It would be great if Pat at Accu-stats had an option on their dvd's for "with commentary" or "without commentary". Probably would be easy to do...

90% of the people Pat has had do commentary have done at least a good job, and often did a great job.

The only one I'll continuously call out as horrible is Mike Shamos on the three cushion videos. He's more annoying than all the others combined. Of the five people I know who order three cushion videos at this point, 4 have said they'll never order another one with him on it. They turn the sound off half the time they watch tapes with him on it; the worst part is he's on some of the best matches to watch.

ALL the "regular" commentators do a JAM UP job.

And that's that. Even Jim Wych (who I used to hate, because of his off kilter delivery) hits the mark more often than not, and I don't mind him at all anymore.

My ranking in terms of the EFFECTIVENESS of their commentary:

Danny Diliberto (You can tell his eyes might be going a little, because sometimes he sees angles just a little "off", but when he sees the angles correctly, he calls the shot dead on 98% of the time.)

Grady (for his personality. He is on par with Billy as far as predicting correctly)

Billy (was never accused of being humble. :D He also incorrectly guesses the shots in One Pocket more often commentating top players, because he has "turned off" his aggressiveness in One Pocket to a certain extent. Danny is MUCH more often on track when commentating One Pocket, IMHO. Billy is enjoyable to listen to for his response to Efren's magic. :D)

Jim Wych and Jerry Forsythe are on par for effectiveness. Forsythe is ahead on enjoyability.

Jay Helfert. I LIKE Jay's commentary BTW, more than Forsythe or Jim Wych.. But sometimes he's a little off on predicting what players are gonna do in One Pocket. Nothing against Jay whatsoever on this. He has a great commentary voice, and is 1000% better technically and aesthetically than Martin Courteois (sp? Coor-TWAH)

Martin Courteois (If Accu-Stats ever lets this man commentate again, I'll go there personally and murder everyone in the company. That's how bad I HATE his commentary. Not even putting Danny D. in the booth with him can make a match with him commentating watchable.)

I think it's especially funny when the commentators start talking about stuff totally not related to the game at hand. Most of the time it's because they and most everybody else have grown tired of watching a not-so-great match. Although I could do without the "1001 ways to plug a book" method to commentating....

I like the book plugs. Why? Because as pool players, we don't often hear about the best books out there otherwise.

I agree,

I cant knock anyone in the booth, I tried it and WOW it was hard for me, there is no feed back-your just talking into dead air. I was horrible.

Chris Bartrum did a great job for TAR one time, he was great, it was omn the Schmit Harriman 1 match.

The guys who did the last TAR gig here in vegas, Alex/Shane were not so good, I dont like to knock them because they love what they did, I support TAR, They did their best, however they talked way to much and were obviously on one side of the game-perhaps what they bet, and that isnt good, They, like I did might realize they arnt the right guys for that position, I tried and was terrible, I might jump in again for 5 minutes but I cant do it, IMO they cant either, again I applaude their effort.

One of the regular Accustat guys had about $5,000 bet on the set. And listining to him call the game you would never know he had a penny on it-thats what makes a great commentator and shows his heart as a gambler-He lost that night, listining to the match no one would ever know. The only reason I knew is he bet with me, and listened. The Alex SVB match last month wasnt like that, people dont want to listen to chatty nervious commentators. I hope they(TAR) addrress this, perhaps the gentalmen who were in the booth that night can change a bit-I know I cant do it its tough

Whoever did the OMGWTF vs Cubc commentating let it be known from the get go that he would not be analyzing shot selection and I thought it was entertaining because he used very "hip" terminoligy i.e. "OMG was diamondized" when a ball rattled on the tight diamond pockets.

Not to mention he hung in there pretty well being sick, and chatted it up with the chat room typers, and the phone texters which was pretty funny

I buy the three cushion tapes and I appreciate any and all knowledge about the game especially from Bob Byrne. There is a lot more to this game than meets the eye.
Make me number five on the list.

Commentating in the booth LIVE is a difficult job. To speak on the fly and come up with constructive thoughts and good content is a skill set that not everybody is suited for.

What if the match is boring as hell and there's not much to talk about? LOL! This is when it's kind of cool to have two commentators who can fill in the "dead" time with colorful colloquy. :)

I am curious about this, though, as this topic as come up before. What would you think of a match between two players with NO commentators? Just microphones pinned on the players themselves. Of course, there will definitely be some dead time when nothing is said, but would that make the match more exciting?

I guess it's to each their own whatever their preference is. I experienced my boyfriend commentating LIVE one time at the DCC, a one-pocket match between Jose Parica and Shannon Daulton. The match was boring, boring, boring, with nothing worthwhile to speak about. Back and forth, no action.

They were renting headphones at the DCC for attendees to listen to the commentators booth. After 10 minutes or so, I was seeing more and more people get the headphones, sitting in the stands, laughing at the commentating. I got extremely nervous with my boyfriend in the booth at this juncture, especially seeing everybody laughing in the stands. :o

Fortunately, he was with J.R. Calvert who is a knowledgable person in his own right, and he used to be a professional player. He also has wisdom in many facets of pool. Sykora of BCn allowed me climb up the stairs and sit in the booth mid-match, so I could hear what was being said. ;)

Let me just say that pool players may be great on a field of green, but it doesn't necessarily mean that ALL pool players have the skill set needed to broadcast live. I'm telling you, it's not as easy as it looks, in other words. :p

I disagree. I watch accu-stats tapes primarily to learn. As long as the person commentating knows what he is talking about, I want him to keep on talking. Especially Bill Incardona. His ability to communicate his knowledge is outstanding. I think it would be helpful if he let his broadcast partner talk a bit more, but too much Incardona is better than too little.
I also enjoy Danny D. too, but often times he is entertaining more than commentating on the game itself.
The only one that gets to me is whatshisname, the Canadian Jimmy.

Boy that was tough to listen to. If they didn't have Jeanette Lee there reminding them why they had mics they would have talked about totally unrelated things all night.

<EDIT>
My mistake, I was confusing vegas with DCC, I can't comment on the Vegas match as I didn't see it.

One time I was at the U.S. Open sitting up in the stands behind the TV table sweating a match. Up comes Billy Incardona, and he sits down right next to me. I can't even remember who was playing, but as we're watching the games, Billy starts commentating. It was like having my own personalized commentating right there in the stands. It was kind of cool!

While we're talking about Danny DiLiberto, let me take this opportunity to post up his phone number: (954) 483 0389. By request, I was asked if I could please post Danny's number on this pool forum to let the members here know that he is available for lessons. He has a lot to offer as far as knowledge of the game, and he's kind of fun to be around too. :D

A new article has been initiated about Danny DiLiberto on Wikipedia, the Internet encylopedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Danny_DiLiberto

If anybody has any content that can be referenced about Danny that would be good to include in this Wikipedia article, please contact me with anything you may have by sending me a PM on this forum. TIA! :)
