Acs nationals in Vegas .. Not impressed

I agree

I have been saying this for years, all the leagues ACS/BCA/APA all hold their National events at the wrong Vegas Hotel/Casino.......

A note to all Leagues have your National event at:

"The Orleans" Hotel & Casino

1. Big Convention area
2. Fun Mardi Gras atmosphere in the casino
3. Beautiful Bar/Lounge with live entertainment
4. Movie Theater
5. Bowling Alley
6. Good shows in the showroom with tickets around $40
7. Awesome Poker Room with 20 or more tables
8. Well priced food options, with a Food Court (Panda, Sabarro, etc......) Fuddruckers, TGIF, Big Al's Oyster bar, Coasta Cantina, and Higher End dinning like, The Prime Rib Loft, Canal Street (Something for every budget & taste buds)

IMHO "The Orleans" Hotel & Casino is by far the best fit for the leagues National Pool Tournaments. It has a fun atmosphere, there are things to do outside of gambling, This hotel/casino offers a good time on every budget which is something that is lost on these league owners.

You decide http://www.orleanscasino.com/

PS: I have not vested interest in "The Orleans" hotel & casino above is only my personal opinion
I agree with you. I have stayed there the past few times I went to Vegas,Comedian Bill Engvall was in-house, and it was a very pleasant experience. The Arena is a capable complex and should be looked at. Thanks jmurphy for posting this up.

Yep,probably so. John's own fault.

Fats,

Why is it John's fault. As I understand the situation, the BCA sold the pool leagues out from under him. The acromyn between ACS and BCAPL and Diamond stems from this action. Considering John started from essentially nothing, ACS has come a long way baby!

Lyn

It's the exact opposite in ac lol they have a ton of restaraunt from cheap places to high end steak houses and posh burger places , pf changs , great sports bar , Irish pub , hooters, there adding a hard shell crab place (forget the name) shopping , IMAX and a big buffet. I was stunned at how weak the trop was. We stayed at the Excalibur and they had a great selection but the casino itself is weak.

Rob,

Another thing I failed to mention was the incredible walking distances involved at the Trop if you didn't stay there. My place is twenty minutes away. Takes nearly as long to walk from the parking lots to the convention center as it does to get there. ACS and Tropicana should discuss offering a couple of ground floor convention center entrances to aleviate this problem.

Lyn

We attended the ACS at the Tropicana in 2012. It was a good event, but the tables were terrible. We decided that was our last trip.

John Lewis is a great guy, but John is only one man. The gentleman, with his 6 inch level just wasn't able to get the Pool Table Leveling job done. I see the mechanic doing the same thing or sorta the same thing on Diamond Tables, but the job seems to get done.
There are few people in the pool world who have the knowledge and expertise at running a pool league system like John Lewis. He is doing exactly what he was born to do. He is one man, and that will be the downfall eventually of the ACS League System. It is not that it was created, but HOW it was created, that is the achilles' heel of the organization. The Olympic Dream and the WPA are albatrosses around his neck, unfortunately not to be shoved away. He no longer has the luxury of a staff to assist him, as they cost money, and revenue is derived from the league participants. This is why you see more regional events for ACS going on in the Midwest, closer to Green Bay. Logistically, very expensive, and were it not for Gary Benson and his tables, virtually impossible to stage a National Event. Yep, he's one guy,...but he wasn't always just one guy.

Lyn, the BCA could not sell something that was not John's in the first place. There is no one who understands this better than me. I will only defer to the next conversation you have with Mark Griffin. I Love John Lewis, always will. That doesn't mean I agree with everything John has ever done as a Professional in the area of the Pool Leagues. It is complex, but as I stated to John when I was in Colo. Springs with Mark,"John, it is not what you did, but how you did it." I will leave it at that.

Fats,

I've known John for over twenty years. Mark for only ten or eleven. Also knew Larry Hubbart for over forty years. Have great respect for all. Each made a place in pool history for themselves. Support each of the leagues and will continue to do so. Thanks for your post.

Lyn,

Sorry but I have to strongly disagree with you. The BCA did not 'sell the leagues out from under him' - and he was just an employee - so the BCA could do what they wanted.

And I have stated before, if the ACS wants Diamond tables, all they have to do is ask.

John did everything in his power to thwart the sale - to the point of intimidating potential buyers and creating fabrications. John did not start from 'nothing' - he planned for close to a year on how to hi-jack the league system. He ended up stealing most of the state organizations - and even removed a lot of the league confidential records from the BCA office - after he had been terminated. Not to mention making copies of several proprietary computer files - especially for the referee program.

And he did all of this while still on the BCA payroll. That's s nice touch - don't you think?

Then went so far as to mail the referees invoices to renew their dues - with the ACS mailing information. You do remember that they first called this new league the 'Billiard CueSports Alliance' don't you? The acronym would be BCA. You think that was a little misleading?

Sorry to 'tear your head off' but you should know better. This is old information (10 years ago now) - and John Lewis showed that he has 'more moves than a snake has hips'. It is a real shame because I know he loves the game of pool. But the 'end does not justify the means'.

I don't have a problem stating all of this because the truth is pretty good defense. It is just like cajunfats said - it is how he did it - not what he did.

Mark,

You don't have to apologize for "tearing my head off". Even if some of the information has been public for years, not everyone has direct access to all of it. As I said in my post "as I understand the situation", it was exactly that. My understanding. Incidentally, thanks for the phone call. You will continue to be someone I look up to. Always appreciate everything you and CSI do for pool. As I mentioned in another post, it was nice to see the impish twinkle in your eye again. I'll see you in July!

Main Forum > Acs nationals in Vegas .. Not impressed

Jmurphy,

You live in Vegas. The Orleans ballroom is 40,000 square feet. That is about 30% of the space we need. The arena is big (couldn't find out size) but that is concrete floors - high ceiling lights - and other issues that sports arenas present. It would NOT work out well.

FYI - we use about 140,000+ square feet for our Nationals. I agree the Orleans has some great facilities - but I think you need to relook using a sports arena.

Appreciate your input - next time stop by the office and we discuss your ideas.

I see the issue with the BCA being there but the ACS and APA
Singles could easily fit in at The Orleans which would service the players much better.

Haha that's Vegas. We stayed at the Excalibur. We're leaving today. Another great trip to sin city comes to an end.

Fast Manners...Hell will freeze over before the ACS get's Diamond tables. You can take that to the bank. LOL :D

Ha thanks Scott. I will take your word for it.

I had the weirdest tournament I have ever played in. In the 3 matches I played in 8 and 9 ball (I discount the fourth, as I had lost interest by then), I lost three coin tosses, missed three balls in total and lost three times on the hill.
To top off my trip I lost in the casino and got sun poisoning.
You could not make it up.....

FastManners...Welcome to Sun, I mean Sin City! LOL That's Vegas for ya! Hope you have a nice trip back to LI...where all ya gotta worry about is Great Whites off Montauk! LOL!
