adding weight to a shaft - good insert material?

Hidy Ho

Missed 4 rail hanger!!!

I got a radial pin shaft .. it's too light at 3.1 ounce. So I thought perhaps I can bore it out, glue in the "material" and retap it to make it a bit heavier.

If this is a do-able approach, what is good and heavy material? Phenolic? Heavier wood? What's good glue to use for this?

Any other approach to make it a bit heavier? I want to get the shaft weight between 3.6 to 4 ounce.

Thanks in advance.

Sell the shaft, don't Mickey Mouse it.
Regardless of how much wght. you add, it will always play like a 3.1oz shaft.

Its not the weight you are seeking. It is the over all density of the shaft wood that gives it its playing characteristics.

what is the reason why you want the shaft heavier? balance?

If it's shaft playability you're after it's not gonna change a thing.

good insert material

Whats the taper and diameter of the shaft.
I've yet to see a 29 inch .820 joint diameter 12.5mm shaft with a long taper
that goes 4oz in a big pin configuration. I've seen plenty 30 inch .850
13.1 mm pro taper shafts go 4.8oz with a brass 5/16-14 insert. Don't forget
ferrule material and length. So if you have a thick long shaft with a long
heavy ferrule and it's 3.1 oz, then yes it is a piece of firewood.

BINGO!!!! 3 oz shaft on 15.5 butt feels way light for me since I'm used to playing with 19.25 ish cues.

It's a LD shaft so I don't think adding a bit of weight toward the end of the shaft will change anything. If it does, I will simply recycle the shaft and get a heavier one. I just wanted to "experiment" and learn. I have same shaft in 3/8x10 configuration and that one came with phenolic insert. However, the radial pin shaft did not.

The shaft is one piece maple but I think it is drilled out in the front with carbon fiber inserted which might explain why the shaft is so light. It's 12.5mm up front and around .845 at the joint.

Light shaft

Get yourself fitted for another shaft. I'm just a cuetech, but I doubt you'll be satisfied if you get someone to add weight to your current shaft. It will be less time and trouble for you IMO. Good luck with whatever you decide.
