Advice/Cue Needed

Wazted

The 8th Dwarf
Not sure if I should post this here or the For Sale area but I have been lurking for a while and now I need 2 things: Advice and depending on the advice; a cue. First the "story"..and we all have one..and this is mine. :) About 8 years ago my ex and I had parted our ways and the vast majority of my things, including my "not-so-awesome" cues wound up at the local Goodwill. I have played "off the wall" ever since and naturally my game shows it. :) Well, I joined a 9 ball league and now I want to start taking it seriously so I need a cue so I can get consistant again.

Here is where I need advice. I can put about $325 or so in a cue. I know I can pick up a new production cue in the McDermott/Viking area for that. My question is..should I spend the cash on a new cue or should I try and find a little better used cue off the For Sale forum? The biggest reason for buying the new cue would be warranty (even tho I don't think the warranty will cover your pissed off wife giving it to the Goodwill). Or does anyone have a great buy on a used one in the same price range?

Thoughts?

Buy a used Gilbert and be happy

For that money you can pick up a simple Gilbert and you will have the best cue for the money.

When you decide to sell, you will get your money back (maybe more) and then try another.

My advice.

predator Sneaky pete was my choice. My second choice was a custom sneaky pete.

Both cues are in the range you describe. and i believe if you take the game seriously you deserve a serious cue. you have identified a need and a budget. go pick up a nice cue. Areil Carmeli(sp) has some decent lookign sneaky pete's for sale through Western Cues.

You're posting to the correct forum.

If you're going to consider mass produced cues, please consider JOSS as well. If you're looking for a plain Sneaky Pete, consider a Huebler Sneaky Pete.

I was in the same exact situation you were in about choosing a cue. Only problem is that I did not know about these message boards before hand.

I decided to upgrade my cue also from what I was using with about the same budget you had. I decided to go with a Joss. The cue was much better than my old ones and I could begin to "feel" the subtle (sometimes not so subtle) differences in hit and feel and how that affected the game. I do not regret getting the Joss. But honestly, now that I know what I like better, what kind of hit and feel I like and so forth, I am really wanting to get a custom plain jane or sneaky pete.

If I knew then what I know now, I would have waited and purchased a from a custom maker.

It seems like you are ready to make an investment in your game. Some of the best advice floating arround is "you get what you pay for" and "get a custom made sneaky or plain jane". Eventuallay, when I have enough cash I will go for a custom cue.

Personally, I love the look of natural wood so these types of cues are right up my alley. Some people say they are to "plain" and doesn't look as nice as other cues, But it looks much nicer to make a good shot with a plain cue rather than missing a shoot with a fancier one.

Buying a used cue is hit and miss.If you are lucky you can get a good cue for a very reasonable 2nd hand price.Ask the locals if anyone has a cue for sale and give it a test drive.Cues are very personal when it comes to hit and when you have the right one in your hand ,you will know it.

If you like the hit and it has a good brand name, you can't go wrong as it will be re-sellable. I've been amazed at some of the deals I've seen people get.Make sure you inspect the cue closely for an warps or other cosemetic flaws and your on your way.

Other than that go the safe route and get a new cue from a known reputable cue maker, some of which have been mentioned earlier in this thread. If your considering a certain brand name, throw that info to the guys here, because they know which brands are good and what is crap.

I really appreciate everyone's input and suggestions. I have been scouring the net looking at the different sites and looking at a lot of cues. :) What it comes down to is that there are a lot of different and really talented cue makers out there and I know that each and everyone of them have supporters so it is actually making my task much easier because it would be hard to go wrong with anyone that has been suggested.

The old "champaign taste on a beer budget" monster is rearing its head though. I don't just want a woman who treats me great..I want her to be pretty too so maybe a plain SP isn't the one for me. I have a feeling I can get more cue for the money by buying used from either someone I know or someone that has a good rep so it looks like I will be spending time on the For Sale forum here.

it sometimes gets a bad wrap but try ebay......ive bought several cues thru there and ive never regretted it. Just deal with someone with a good rating and only pay using paypal. Ive seen several nice cues go off there lately for your price range or less, razuehan, diveny, huebler, etc etc. Theres a plain huebler on there right now with about 2 hours to go thats at $92.

For that money the best hitting cues I have bought are a
new Shurtz and a used Tim Scruggs SP in great condition.

I have a new fancy hustler style cue thats almost finished. 4pt rosewood blank into maple forearm. Hoppe style white/black butt. Black linen joint with holly & ebony ringwork. 1 shaft, 13mm with Aegis & Moori (M). 19oz
It's in your price range...and I promise the "hit" will make you weak in the knees. Unless you prefer something fancier.

Fancier? I see you are a 45ACP man. I have a stainless Colt Officer's model and put pearl grips on it..and it is my carry weapon. Yeah..I guess I am drawn to fancy. :)

I hope you've got your little Colt stoked with some fine Win. Ranger LE ammo (black talon replacement) 230gr +P. Bonded 230gr Golden Saber would be my 2nd choice.
Since you are indeed drawn to fancy...I suggest you continue to save.
Oh...and don't miss out on the new Springfield XD in .45acp...possibly one of the finest .45's ever. Under 2 inch groups handheld at 25yds...bone stock.

Golden Sabre in it waiting to give an ol' Texas howdy if ever needed.

Yeah..I figure I need to put some more in the pot to get something with a few more bells and whistles. I have no desire to have a cue in my den on the wall to look at though..I am looking for a playing cue with maybe a small amount of bling on it. Thats why I am thinking used is my best bet.

I spent about that on a Bob Frey Sneaky Pete that I have been enjoying very much. I purchased it from Cues n Things.

It hits well.

It may not have a lot of fancy features, but the figure of the cocobolo is nice enough that the cue looks right at home next to custom cues costing many times as much.
