advice on changing a pin size

Is it worth changing the pin in a cue? I purchased a sugartree shaft (because it will take a while before I save up the money to buy the whole cue) and I am dying to shoot with it.

I could have sworn one of my cues had a 3/8 10 but found that it was a radial thread. So I bought a new JD cue to see what the buzz is about and it stated it was a 3/8 10 pin. The sugar tree shaft won't screw on.

Is it worth having a local cue repair guy change out the pin to something similar to what eric uses?

I'm going to suggest that you consider going in the other direction.
Leave the pin as is, where is and change the thread configuration in the shaft.
IIRC, Eric uses a 3/8x10 but with a .308" minor, in which case, the shaft will fit
if the shaft's minor is opened-up to .312".
Whichever route you choose to go, have the work done by someone who knows what they're doing.

My minor is .3115", so it should fit pretty much any other 3/8-10. It looks like Atlas' flat thread pin but it's not, just made by same manufacturer. Seems Atlas & I were designing pins roughly at the same time, with me being more specific about what I wanted. I used to make my own pins, and asked Tommy to copy my pin, and sent a shaft so he he could test the fit. IIRC, he explained to me that the .308 for Atlas was so the generic pin could fit pretty much any after market shafts & such, basically making it more universal & user friendly. My pin is a tight fit & often too big to fit a lot of other 3/8-10 shafts. But my shafts are large enough bore to fit almost any other 3/8-10 pin.

My guess is that either it's an old shaft that fit my older pins, which were slim profile v-groove 3/8-10, or a 3/8-11 shaft I made for a SW. If it's one of the shafts I made at 3/8-11, then it won't fit any 3/8-10 pin. If it's an old shaft for my old pin, then it simply needs bored, reamed, drilled, whatever, slightly to open the hole. Anybody with one of those piloted taps can just run the tap through the shaft & it'll open the hole enough. Those taps have a reamer of sorts as the pilot, which cuts the hole to size (if need be) before threading.

a million thank you's.....

Once again, thank you all for your comments. It is very much appreciated that you take your time for the inexperienced and ignorant.

I will take it to one of the local cue guys and see if he can thread the kevlar insert for me.

Eric,
will you be at valley forge this year? I looked all over for you last year and didn't see you. If you are, I will start saving up my money now because some day I will own a sugartree cue......

I'll be at VF. I was there last year. No booth or anything, just hanging out with folks.

Insert material

I originally had no idea what the insert material was. It looks fibrous. Pics are rough. I just posted as per erics request. Either way, its goin to the local cue guy to get bored and a new insert put in as long as he has a real lathe and not a repair lathe....

Any suggestions on insert material would be greatly appreciated. I would like to use the same material as eric uses but am considering a nylon insert. I have a few hueblers and like their hit. I dont know how it will turn out because I was told its a stiff hitting shaft from eric.......
